This conversation is a preview of my Zoom workshop on Thurs 18 April 2024 at 10AM (UK time), as part of the Advanced English Summit. In my workshop I will be talking about how to really learn vocabulary, and not just stare at word lists.
This is a conversation about the subject of the workshop, and summit organiser Clare Whitmell asks me questions about why vocabulary is important, why I love teaching it, common mistakes made by learners, ways of learning vocabulary more effectively, and some tools you can use.

To be honest, at the beginning of your chat I thought that it was going to be a shallow discussion on why learning vocab is so important and so on. But the part where you talk about the different resources and how to use them it was really eye-opening, to the point that it made me want to sign up for the whole summit and see if I can find more inspirational tips that help me get my English to a higher level. And being the summit for free is what makes it possible for me, so thank you very much both Luke and Claire 👏👏👏

Hi Luke. Great advice you gave! Thanks. I recall how I filled my dictionary. I did it with a book. Back then I knew the grammar quite well, but my dictionary was pretty poor. So I decided to start reading a book - a really big one, not just 100 pages. For me it was 'A Song of Ice and Fire' by Martin. Man, it was hard! I started with two pages a day. My brain was kinda dying, trying to avoiding the reading. I kept on. In a week I was reading 4 pages, in a couple of months - ten. By the time I finished the second book, I was limited by the free time I have for the book, not by amount of pages. What I noticed - the authors use the same words, and it takes first ten, maybe twenty pages to get familiar with the vocabulary of the book. It changes with a new author though... )

Hi Luke. I often find a hard time to use new vocabulary that I memorized to precisely convey meaning. For example, these four words: hard, complicated, difficult, intricate all indicate something is not easy to understand or use. How do I differentiate these words? How do I decide which word I should use under right circumstances or contexts to precisely express what I mean? Thanks.

Hi Luke. I signed up your premium. Could you please help me how I can get the pdf's of the podcast with their explained Vocab.
@LukesEnglishPodcast
@LukesEnglishPodcast Месяц назад
Hi, the best way to use LEP Premium is to add the episodes to a podcast app on your phone. Then you can find the PDF and video links in the episode descriptions (show notes) for each episode. Here's how to do that www.teacherluke.co.uk/how Otherwise, check this page for more information about getting PDFs for premium episodes teacherluke.co.uk/premium/how-do-i-get-pdfs-for-lep-premium-on-acast/ Let me know if you need any more help. I definitely recommend adding LEP Premium to a podcast app on your phone. If you don't already have an app for podcasts, I recommend using Pocket Casts. It's free for iOS and Android.

I mean, is it really even a question? Vocab is the most vital part when it comes to learning any language, including your mother tongue. And what I meant by vocab is not just memorizing corresponding meanings and whatnot. Rather, it's more of an eclectic approach in terms of collocation, connotation, associated images, and feelings. Once you start developing a strong grasp on it, then all the grammatical learning will be naturally obtained and and you will fairly easily develop a good affinity with it overtime.

Thunderbit summary: One-Sentence Summary In this conversation, Luke Thompson discusses the importance of vocabulary in learning English, the common mistakes people make when trying to expand their vocabulary, and provides various effective strategies and resources for improving vocabulary, including using AI tools like ChatGPT and online dictionaries. Summary Deep Dive 🗣 The Importance of Vocabulary Vocabulary is vital for communication, as you need words to express yourself, even if your grammar is not perfect. At advanced levels, a rich and nuanced vocabulary allows you to speak with greater precision, add layers of meaning, and discuss a wider range of topics. Vocabulary is a key differentiator between language proficiency levels. 💡 Mistakes in Vocabulary Learning Simply making lists of words with translations in your native language is not the most effective approach. Learners often feel they need to memorize 100% of a vocabulary list, when remembering even 50% is still progress. Failing to consider factors like word usage, connotations, collocations, and pronunciation can hinder effective vocabulary acquisition. 📚 Strategies for Expanding Vocabulary Utilize online dictionaries like those from Oxford, Cambridge, and Longman, which provide detailed information beyond just definitions. Explore tools like the Longman Language Activator and Oxford Collocations Dictionary to discover related words and common word pairings. Use AI assistants like ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot to generate example sentences and practice using new vocabulary. Immerse yourself in English through extensive reading and listening, which can lead to passive vocabulary acquisition. Actively practice using new words in personalized contexts to cement their learning. 🔊 The Importance of Pronunciation Knowing how words are pronounced and how they may change in connected speech is crucial for understanding and using vocabulary effectively. Resources like the website Youglish.com can provide authentic audio samples of words and phrases used in context. 🎯 The Key is Consistent Practice The more you actively engage with and use new vocabulary, the more likely you are to retain and be able to apply it. Allowing for some ambiguity and not expecting 100% mastery of every word is important, as long as you are consistently making progress.
