The chest thing actually does make sense since chests close after a certain period of time, meaning you can "unlock" them again and get something else!
You confused the hell out of me with the chest its not complicated a closed icon means "yes it has to be opened" a opened chest means youve opened it already just wait till it closes again
For the chests I didn't realize they were open or closed. I just looked to see if they were highlighted to be able to open them or not. If they glow, you can open them, if not, you can't.
Petting the cat can also help you out, I've had injured characters healed and other things happen because i stroked the cat. The effects do seem to random though.
I don't think it's based on Arcane level. I think it's based on story progress. If the icon is a circle, it won't give you arcane. If it's a quest marker, it will. I'll go for days with no new passages to read, then do a story mission, and get a few new passages.
