Important addendum to Evening and Night prayers (and solemnities). They are handled differently and not included in the basic Evening and Night Prayer videos!
Hi Chris, I am still here taking baby steps through the beautiful Liturgy of the Hours. Even with my mistakes (and I am making tons) I am still getting much out of this new addition to my days. I hope you are well. I am rewatching every video in the series and I am again picking up tons of information that I missed the first time. Question- in these videos we used Monday August 12 as our example. In video 2-Setting up.....for our red ribbon -we saw there was text in the Proper of Saints for August 11th, none for the 12th and text for the 13th so we put our ribbon there. I thought it was just to mark what we do on the August 13th. However in this video we are using the August 13th text-so I must be missing something big? I do plan to rewatch your SOL series once I get through these (maybe that will help) Anyway, I can’t wait to get to your Missal video and the Little Office and Ordo....but for me I really need to be focused and get this first :-) Thank you again for this series without it-I would not be on this journey through the Liturgy of the Hours.
Hi Donna! I made these videos over a year ago and I've learned a bit since then! I also still make mistakes.. but that's just part of being human.. I'm glad you've gotten some use out of the videos! You are not missing anything... I probably made a mistake or wasn't clear... Only on Solemnities and the Saturday/Sunday nights do you use the beginning of the Night Prayer section of the book. If you set up the ribbons as I do, it would be the YELLOW ribbon. For feasts and memorials, night prayer follows the day of the week it occurs on. And you are right... the red ribbon is to just mark where in the Proper of Saints you are or are due next. In my case, as is it is currently June 16, 2020, my red ribbon is set on the page for June 22, 2020 .. *optional* memorial for Bishop Paulinus of Nola.. Why not June 19th and June 21st? Those memorials are superseded by the Solemnities of Sacred Heart (June 19) and the regular Sunday solemnity (June 21). So to use an upcoming real example: Friday June 19, 2020 is the solemnity of the Sacred Heart. on THURSDAY, you will follow the regular Thursday flow until Evening Prayer. As this is the evening before a Solemnity, you will be treating it as you would on a Saturday evening/night: Evening Prayer will be "Evening Prayer I" found on page 624 of Volume III of the 4 volume set. Night Prayer will then logically be from the beginning of the Night Prayer section as "After Evening Prayer I on Sundays and Solemnities" found on page 1264 of the same volume. I hope that helps!!
A Liturgical day runs from midnight to midnight, with the exception of Solemnities, Sundays and Feasts of the Lord occurring on Sundays, which begin with Evening Prayer I on the preceding day. Feasts and Memorials: Feasts are celebrated within the course of the day and have no EP1. But Feasts of the Lord in the general calendar occurring on a Sunday OT take the place of Sunday office with proper EP1. Memorials are simple remembrance of a saint. There are two kinds of memorials: Obligatory and Optional. Saints proper with marked "Memorials" are Obligatory memorials and must be observed, these are the saints day usually entered in the General Roman Calendar and enjoys especial importance in Rome. A particular diocese may have their own Obligatory memorial not entered in the general calendar these must be observed in their diocese. Unmarked saints proper are Optional memorials and may or may not be celebrated. You may refer to the "General Norms for the Liturgical Year"
I believe you are correct! Solemnities and Feasts are usually clearly marked in the Proper of Saints. When I compare the St. Joseph's Guide to the Proper of Saints, I believe that Memorials that are clearly labeled as such are obligatory but those listed without any subheading in red are *optional* memorials.
