Soichiro Honda did not design that F1 engine. It was lead engineer Soichiro Irimajiri, the same guy who designed the 50cc twin, 125cc five, and 250cc six cylinder all-conquering GP bikes. They had redlines of 22000+ rpm and the sound was absolutely ear shattering. He later designed the six cylinder 1047cc CBX street bike.

Indeed, no replacement for displacement, but a high cyl count does wonders on the other side... Any and all of these engines had pathetic torque ratings, at least lets say compared to a Rolls Royce 6.75l/8cyl... These engines could rev high as fuck and have high hp because of that, Rolls can rev up to 4k rpm but still has high hp because of its high torque...(for imbeciles who would argue, horsepower is a function of torque and rpm)
@killstacy8088

Considering that the engine was designed 70 years ago, it's a masterpiece. It's hard to believe that ran the same boost pressure as the BMW 1.5l qualifying engines of the 80's. I wonder, with modern electronics, how much hp was even possible? Sounds like the perfect block.
@RRVCrinale
@RRVCrinale 7 лет назад
AndyFromBeaverton I see using modern materials and technology causing that engine to scream up to and maybe past its theoretical redline. I'm not sure what would limit it more: the friction from having sixteen cylinders and a supercharger, or the acceleration of the pistons themselves? Crankshaft whip, perhaps?

I remember Moto Guzzi from back in the 70s & 80s. To me, 78 hp is still alot of power for a streetbike. No doubt, oday's twenty-somethings would laugh at that. I haven't owned a m/c for 20 years now, so that's the last time I knew how much hp was out there on the latest bikes... Haven't checked lately, but after 20+ years of evolution, 150 hp wouldn't surprise me for a typical Honda, Kawasaki, or Vulcan street racer these days

It's easy to make a car with that much boost if you have such low displacement. Lower volume of engine means you can pump in more air with the same size of supercharger.
@VisioRacer
@VisioRacer 7 лет назад
I read about boost of 82 psi / 5.7 bar
@JasonWMorningwood
@JasonWMorningwood 7 лет назад
VisioRacer And it makes a lot of sense, needs a heck of a lot of boost to make 800 hp from 1.5 liters of physical displacement

+Михаил Николаев Believe me, I've wanted an mc22 cbr250rr (20k redline) for a while. Unfortunately it would cost nearly as much as a 600, so no company can justify making a new one. They never brought the cbr250rr to the US so I'd have to import one if I really wanted one.

Jordan Hillard I have owned 2 Honda MC22, very common up to 5 years ago in Australia, (most have now been killed by learners) they are a work of art, just like most Honda motorcycles from 1988 to 2002 before they started down the cheaper Thailand built bikes. Have also owned the mini RVF400, another jewel of a Honda that sounds great.
@jth_printed_designs
@jth_printed_designs 7 лет назад
+Fordsidevalvesforever I've looked into how much it'd cost to get one imported and I'd have probably 5-6k USD in it. At that point it's just not worth it for a 25 year old 250. Sweet bikes, I just wish we had them in the states.

I'm a little disappointed here. Coming from motorbikes I found these "extreme" engines very lacking. I mean I myself have a 600cc with 4 cylinders and 130bhp and there are numerous 300cc, 250cc and even 200cc 4 cylinder engines. An engine 10 times the size with only twice the cylinders seemed a little disappointing.

If that comment is aimed towards me, I am no American and I don't consider an engine of size of 2.0 - 2.5L really large. It can be pretty decent and definitely not small for some cars, like the 2.0L in the Subaru BRZ, but compared to other engine, like small blocks, AMG V12s or whatever else bigger you can think of, it is or they are relatively small.

Cool. Brings back memories. I remember the F1 cars when the formula was 1.5 liters and actually saw the Honda run a couple of times - and yes, it sounded amazing - you could hear that thing screaming a half lap away. And somebody (don't remember who, I've lost a lot of brain cells since then) had a 1.5 liter H-16 engine.
