In this video I will take you threw the process to replace the headliner fabric in a gmc or chevy truck, with a fabric of your liking.
I apologize in advance, my footage got messed up when I started to apply the fabric. just insure that the fabric is applied to half of the headliner and complete, before moving on to the other half.
please watch the entire video before pursuing your own project to insure your properly prepared.
thanks for watching and I hope it helps!
I can't stress enough, the foam backing has to be completely removed from the headliner unit before you can apply your fabric. You will be attaching the fabric to the fiberglass located under the foam backing.
-Remove the headliner unit from truck, rip off the old fabric, use a wire brush to remove the foam, use rubbing alcohol to clean the surface when done.
-choose a fabric of your liking from your local fabric store. however, keep in mind that you will want something fairly thin and or fairly stretchy to get around bends and corners easily.
-Spray fabric with light water, throw it in dryer till all wrinkles are gone.
-Drape fabric over half of the headliner unit, get it perfectly lined up and ready.
-Spray the exposed half fabric and half headliner unit with your choice of adhesive, let it dry to the touch, typically 10 min.
-Slowly and gently lay the fabric in place starting from the middle and working your way out.
gently lay it in place until you are happy with the lay out.
-From this point you need to massage it into place starting out gentle and pushing harder as you go, once again starting from the middle to the outside.
-Once you are happy with the results complete the other half of the application in the same exact manner.
-Stay close by for the next 24 hours, keep it fairly warm and keep checking for areas that may have lifted off the unit. simply massage these areas back down with a lot of pressure.
-If, after 24 hours, any areas don't come out so great and you can't convince the fabric to work with you, use a heat gun very cautiously to heat it up and convince it to comply with lots of pressure. BE CAREFUL! you don't want a burn mark in your awesome new headliner!
Good luck.....thanks for watching! Let me know how yours turned out in the comments!

Very nice! Looks good and your video was well done. Years ago I did a headliner in a '80 Blazer. Instead of gluing I used monofilament fishing line and sewed buttons on every 6", in a checkered grid. The material I used was camo with a 1/2" fiber backing. It gave it a puffy look and dampened the road noise a little. Well done on your video.

For removing the foam you might try a plastic detailing brush with stiff bristles (auto parts kind) and a vacuum running to remove & clean up as you go (& hearing protection). Minimize chemicals when you can. Try not to breath lots of dust & chemicals. Be gentle.

Thank you for sharing your DIY project: I saved it to my playlist. Very nice job on the video. I am trying to resolve the cause of water leaking into my 2005 GMC Sierra 1500 pickup truck. Did you remove the third brake light from the outside in order to replace the headliner? In my first attempt I tried to use a sealant on the third brake light - I missed the mark big time because water still leaks into the truck from the third brake light; thus, I purchased a gasket from a seller on eBay and I also purchased a new third brake from a local auto parts store.

I don’t remember having to mess with the 3rd brake light at all. The housing should be tucked behind the headliner. Sorry to here about the leak. Never fun getting water inside. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching.

the fabric used on this headliner was very thin and very stretchy. I was worried u could see threw it after it was applied. but thats what the owner had to have so I did it. turned out great! We have a fabric store in my town. so I like to actually be able to touch it before I buy it. any fabric with 5 percent or more spandex will help to stretch it around tough areas. check out my dodge video for very thick fabric application. I also did a video on a vw with some very thin plaid. hope this helps.

Joel Salazar it just wind bond properly. You need a solid surface to glue to.

If u also cut the wiring in the headliner there’s a couple sets of wires that is the same color so I’m confused I don’t want to put it together wrong
@Michael-pu6hb

So I cut my wire too then saw this video. Did you solder the wires back or just electrical tape them?
@hititwithyourpurse9339
@hititwithyourpurse9339 5 лет назад
I soldered mine. And then slid shrink tubing over the connections. Being so close to the door gasket, I was concerned about the potential of moisture.

How much should I pay for that job? Just labor and adhesive, I supply the cloth. I just got a quote of $ 245. I thought it was a lot and was going to do it myself, but after watching your video, I rather just pay someone. Miami,FL

Ya that sounds like a great deal to me. So long as they know what they are doing. I usually charge 600 or more in. That’s allot of work

How wide and how long did you buy the fabric
@hititwithyourpurse9339
@hititwithyourpurse9339 5 лет назад
I want to say 60 inches on the width. It is always close, maybe 4” left over. Always buy more than you need for the length Incase you end up wanting to wrap other parts, pillars, sun visors, etc. remember, this might cost 15$ if your going way over board. So get more than u need.
