I think your demonstration is fair and objective for anyone considering these calibers. I'm impressed with 45 super. I prefer a semiauto pistol for woods protection even though I'm a big fan of .357 and .44 mag. I carry 10mm and at times 9mm. We don't have brown bears where I frequent, but I have to say a 400lb black bear makes me nervous if I happen to have 9mm for protection. Anyway, I think this is one of the better comparisons that I've seen.

I don’t see the 460 Rowland in any of the comments. I recently converted a Para ordinance expert 1911 to 460 after searching/ researching a large dangerous game handgun. For $300-$340 you can convert a number of 45acp offerings to a 44 magnum equivalent ( 255 gr underwood = 1300 fps or a 135 grain Lehigh penetrator at 1900 fps). That’s 300 blackout territory! Seemed well worth the expense.

Yeah man the 460 Rowland is just absolutely awesome there's nothing out there that can even begin to compare with it in a semi-automatic platform unless you're going to resurrect an old 45 Winchester magnum lar grizzly which is awesome I would love to get my hands on one of those

I upgraded my glock 21 Gen 4 to shoot 45 super by underwood. Fantastic stuff. Got the 135 grain Leigh defense extreme defender at 1500 fps, the 185 grain at 1300 fps and the 230 grain at 1100 fps. Minimum of 610 ft lb energy up to 700. Not bad from company loaded stuff. Shot it already a couple days. Kicks a little but definitely manageable. (weaver stance with crushing grip)

357sig says Hello! Really good test by the way. Not surprised at all with the 9mm performance out of a longer barrel with flat nose bullets, you're getting into the low power 357sig territory with this setup. Full power 357sig typically outpenetrates 10mm when comparing ammo with similar sectional density, not to say it outperforms it because 10mm is still a bigger diameter bullet hole. Both great cartridges, and so is the 45 Super.

Glad to see you post again. Shot placement is definitely key, recently had a hog hunting experience really hammer this home. Someone had placed 2 wounding shots on a 150lb-ish boar (.270 Winchester) and I had chased it down. Ended up with 9 rounds of 135gr +P critical duty 9mm being fired into it, the final shot being a head shot that actually put it down.
@7N6ballistics
@7N6ballistics 2 года назад
How did the critical duties actually perform…penetration, expansion? Typically if something really wants to put up a fight..unless the brain is starved of oxygen…which takes time.. only destruction of the central nervous system can guarantee an end…
@M.H.D.actual
@M.H.D.actual 2 года назад
@@7N6ballistics unfortunately I was at one of those "All inclusive" type places and didn't get to gut or butcher the animals we shot. The only exit wound was from the headshot and none of the shoulder and torso shots exited so I can only assume the projectiles did their job and expanded. If I were to guess even more I would say I was reaching at least the lungs with the first shots as it started to slow down with the 7th or 8th round anchoring the hog more or less against a fence, and the 9th through the head I was able to take my time and it wasn't moving much, this final round dropping it completely. CZ-PO7 4-ish inch barrel, started shooting at 35 yards ending at about 15 yards. I chose the critical duty after watching some dude on RU-vid shoot through a dead hog skull and despite blasting through bone the bullet seemed to hold together enough for me.
@7N6ballistics
@7N6ballistics 2 года назад
@@M.H.D.actual More than likely they expanded then…Critical Duty isn’t really known to under penetrate…would have liked to know if they made it to the far side hide. Either way..2rds from a .270 again shows “hydrostatic shock” from a handgun is pretty insignificant on animals of reasonable size…as that .270 FAR exceeds anything that could be dreamed of from service caliber handguns…
@M.H.D.actual
@M.H.D.actual 2 года назад
@@7N6ballistics Yes for sure, the two rifle shots were definitely bad shots, at least one of them being a gut shot. Cranial over pressure maybe but hydrostatic shock isn't all it's cracked up to be, especially in handguns. I will definitely be keeping the critical duty as a 'woods load' for now as it seems to have adequate penetration, although I am also very curious as to what those bullets looked like. I guess that's for next time.

I have no horse in this race. I own multiple guns in all three of the calibers tested. 45 super did seem to be the most devastating with a larger hole. The 124gr 9mm was a pleasant surprise. Concur that .45 Super and 10mm would be likely to do the job with correct shot placement; I have my doubts about the 9mm, penetration notwithstanding. Bullet shape and constrution has a lot to do with it. For instance look at some of the all copper projectiles such as G9 after passing through glass…light for caliber, but minimal deflection. In this case it was the projectiles that didn’t yaw that penetrated the most…which I believe has more to do with a weight forward…IE a shorter squat 124 gr vs a longer 115 or 147gr.
