Im a filipino that practices kali/filipino martial arts. I encountered Destreza when I was trying to get into sport fencing. Apparently, the Philippines being a spanish colony for 300 years, we have a fairly interesting connection with the spanish fencing arts; Destreza in particular. As I understand it, Destreza was meant to be a universal fighting theory, having the principles of rapier be transferrable to other weapons as well as unarmed fighting. We took this mindset and put it in our own martial arts! Which makes sense since there were masters of Destreza that lived in the Philippiness. History is amazing 😁

Spanish destreza is basically the break down of fighting into basic geometry: Straight lines at walking forwards/backwards and thrusting/jab punches/frontal kicks, combined with the circles of walking around your opponent and blade slashes/hook and uppercut punches/round kicks. Like you said, it's a universal fighting theory. It breaks down any fighting style into its most basic geometrical elements, that's why Spanish conquistadors were so successful in their worldwide conquest, no matter how exotic or unusual the fighting styles they'd encounter were, and why they were feared by every major warrior class in the world at the time (Even by the fabled Japanese styles after ronin faced the Tercios at the Battle of Cagayan in 1582) The British used to say that they wanted the Spaniards to come by sea rather than land to even stand a chance.

@@granudisimo conquistadors were not sucsesfful in world conquest because of destreza, it was becuase of the pikes, and tercio formation. In a line of formation your space is limited and you can't apply circular movement. Only 2 handed swords and shamshirs, were effective in formation combat, rather else ask the landskenechts or the ottomans. The Holy Roman empire was sucesfully carried through lines of pikes and bastard swords, and the turks did the same through milita men with rotella and saber mixed with lines of men with archebuses.

@@omari2306 Yeah but this video was centered around swordfights, not battle tactics and formations.

Loved this one! It piqued my curiosity regarding the connections between Verdadera Destreza and the Bolognese school. I'd love to see a video like this one on the Bolognese system.

It was nice and very helpful for anyone who want to know about Destreza. where can i find another Destreza manual in english? I've already Thibault's manual and some french guy's one, but i need carranza's or pachecco's manual... I found only another manual in modern portuguese. That make me little bit frustrated...

It's a bit of a shame that the black bar at the bottom covers up some of the text. But very interesting interview!

You must travel to Spain or contact some one, look for Toledo Town. There are many families of ancient smiths that preserve the tradition. But watch out for swords for tourists, look for one for fencing practitioners, a True Sword, "Espada Ropera".

No, all style of fencing fade away when guns become really popular, and now the hema guys use old books to revive what they can. There is no point to fight a war long time ended and for doing that we prefer the last civil war which allow us to hate each other endlessly.
