Hey Ben, the image you used at 13:25 - the part where you mentioned Chinese moveable type - that image is actually Korean. I really enjoy your presentation, as a self-taugh graphic designer this kind of material is so helpful to me. Thank you for the great work!

I have a final in a course called "History of Graphic Design" and the final is to make a timeline of the history of graphic design, from cave paintings up till the present. I am watching your video now, but had to comment how thankful I am. Thank youuu for taking the time to film this very informative video. I will send this video to my classmates! ❤️

I really enjoyed the recap of pre-print press history of illustrations, and your explanation of the artistic goals and intentions of visited movments. However, more towards the end, one very dire misconseption goes directly against the goal of the video: understanding the histroric context of art syles, schools and their intentions. For example, recap how Bauhaus movement ended in USA well generally, but you claim the reason why they left Germany as the polar opposite of historic reality. Communism and Fascism aren't the same. Denouncing one doesn't lend support for another, so there is no need to try to see them as the same. Nazies really hated communist. And communist really hated fascists and especially Nazies. On both ideological level as the movements had very opposite values, and for the simple fact Nazies and fascists did their best to hunt down, displace, and even exterminate anyone and anything they saw as communist. One of the main reason or justification of why nazies pushed Bauhaus and other art schools, movements and artist out of germany was because they perseaved them as Communist and revolutionary. Similarly the reason why Nazies were successful in establishing their regime was because many companies backed them up, often because their fierce opposition to communism and socialism. Simply put, Nazies were not communist, they were fiercly anti-communist. Their economic policies even in war effort, didn't privatise companies, they expanded production by deepening the ties between companies and the state - unless Lochheed Martin is communist, the nazies weren't either. Similarly USSR was very much againts the nazie movement, saw the rise of Fascism as a great threat before UK, France or other european states. Nazies very openly hated communism, so this was very natural conclusion. I know this very much steps aside the main topic of the video, but it is important, especially when many of the movements discussed had socialist leanings or agenda. Nazies weren't secretly communist. They were Fascist, and anti-communist. Their policies didn't copy socialist policies nor policies of authoritarian communism. Nazies never did nor even intend to in any way take economic power away from companies or the owners of companies, and in fact gained support of companies because of threat of socialist policies being implemented. Regardless of ones opinion of Communism or USSR, calling Nazies communist is a dire misunderstanding of history, and spoils many of the lessons crusial to learn from the period. Say if one falsely concludes that opposition of communism is the best way to never have a fascist movement gain power again, the group who would most definitely support and aid such efforts would be fascist of past and current times. And if one wants to protect art and free expression, thinking suppression of them was mainly a communist goal, then they might nod along when a school like Bauhaus is shut down for "doctornation of students into communist ideology". One simply can not make correct conclusions and is in risk of making direcly opposite ones to ones intentions, if one sees the Nazies as communist. Because the groups following their ideology, holding their values, and trying to avoid assosiation with the history of their ideas, are anything but communist.

Great video, I just want to make one correction that I haven't seen others mention. When you said the German Bauhaus designers were kicked out of Germany, you switched from saying Nazis to Communist. The Nazis were not communist, they were fighting the communists in Russia and they jailed and deported socialists and communists, of which many Bauhaus members were (which is why they were persecuted).

I think it's not very accurate, quite a little arrogant if I would like to understand the paintings of 10 000 years ago, to say that they're easy do understand, you don't really know what they represent in terms of the spiritual meanings of hunting, the way they used colors and what meaning there could be behind many things, you just can't know now..

Bauhaus was fantastic! Thank you for this video! But please be careful, Nazism is not a branch of communism! Most of the artists, as well as philosophers, thinkers, scientists etc., fled to America from Nazi Germany during the thirties and forties while trying to save their lives and families because, mostly, they were of Jewish or any other "decadent" and "degenerate" descent. Soviets (not Russians) were not that big of a problem at the time, and were, in fact, one of the key factors in keeping Germany from completely devastating Europe. On that note, Nazi propaganda against degenerate art (Entartete Kunst) also gives an insight in clear and to-the-point ways of conveying one horrible and frightening message. Cheers!

What distorted history are you teaching? Indian Vedas are the oldest written texts in the world and at present the scientists confirm its date back to 2500 BC. The Vedas are composed using Sanskrit, a system of language that is almost perfect for any communication. The Chinese came to India in search of these knowledge systems. Alexander also travelled all the way to the borders of India attracted by what Magasthenes (Greek Historian) wrote in the "Indica".
@juurstudio
@juurstudio 8 месяцев назад
Vedas were mostly only recited and passed on orally for a very long time. Serious scientists are right now claiming that they were actually written down "only" during a period of 1500-500 BCE. This still does not explain why, for instance, the respectable The Meggs' History of Graphic Design (2016) glosses over Vedic Sanskrit as if it played no part in the formation of world alphabets. He only ever mentions it in the following paragraph: "The Aramaic alphabet is believed to be the predecessor of scripts used in India, apparently arriving around the seventh century BCE. Extensive elaboration was necessary to develop alphabets suitable for Indian spoken languages. The Indian subcontinent has a complex array of spoken and written language forms, and the specific origins of early writing in India and its neighboring nations are quite controversial." The grave error there is, of course, that Aramaic alphabet had nothing to do with Vedic Sanskrit which was written in Brahmi script, which played much more influential role for the development of all the other Indian scripts and alphabets.
@mrhellaboy
@mrhellaboy 8 месяцев назад
@@juurstudio Yes, I agree with you that the Vedic Hymns were passed through generations via recital. That doesn't mean ancient 'Bharat' (present Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nepal, Tibet, Bhutan, Burma, and India) had no written languages. Bharat invented a refined language from existing languages and that is termed "Sanskrit" Just means "refined/Purified". The Sanskrit was meant to serve the purpose of communicating the Vedas to the far reaches of Bharat without distortion. Recital was considered to be the best form of no-noise communication. If you want to know how successful this system is then just travel through present India and try to talk to people from different states of India who speak different languages. You will be surprised that although they speak completely different languages The Vedas shall be exactly the same without any distortion in not only pronunciation but also written scripts too. I have not seen or heard of any other language system that has achieved such distinction. The world needs to wake up to the truth that Bharat was a very advanced civilization and is still far ahead of other civilizations in context to "spirituality" And seeking truth.

Since the video serves as educational content it would be better if those were correct.
