During a recent seminar I was asked about the development of Shuai Jiao and how widespread it is in China. I went on to give a brief summary of the history and development of Shuai Jiao from the Qing Dynasty to present day. This summary is based off of what I learned during my 8 years living and training in Beijing. During that time I learned to read, speak, and write Chinese so that I could go deeper into the art and connect with the culture better. My knowledge comes from reading the few Chinese book there are on Shuai Jiao and speaking with many practitioners of the art including Master Li Bao Ru, Professor Su Xue Liang, and senior students of the late Master Wang Wen Yong.
I want to preface that I am by no means a martial historian and before coming to Beijing I had no previous knowledge of Shuai Jiao history and its development. This is simply what I learned after being immersed for 8 years in the culture and training of Beijing Shuai Jiao.
On a personal note, I have never cared that much about historical details or research when it comes to the arts. Knowing some history and facts does have merit, but my priority has always been training to integrate and embody the physical and philosophical principles of the arts.
