During the Q & A portion of a recent seminar I spoke briefly about Big Stick training in Shuai Jiao and demonstrated a few different aspects of the practice.
The main purpose of training the 'big stick' is to develop the specialized strength and movement called 'Heng'. The main purpose of developing 'Heng' is to be able to off-balance your opponent in a very specific way to set up entries for throws. Understanding the purpose and application of the practice is very important in shaping body mechanics and developing correct intent in training.
Besides developing 'Heng' the stick can also be used to develop a better connection in the arms and waist in your solo practice. This usage of the stick though should be considered simply a supplement and variation of solo technique practice and not specific 'big stick' training.

Very interesting. I'm new to shuai jiao concept but it amazes me for the practical use. Thanks for the video, I will certainly look into more.

Speaking of your comment about finding similarities between Shuai Jiao and other arts, and you mentioning Okinawan Karate practitioners seeing similarities specifically; There has been a major renaissance going on in the Karate community over the last 20 years but astronomically in the last 5-10 years regarding the origins of Karate, what the movement patterns of the kata are for, and how to train them. New info translated for the first time have revealed just how much grappling used to be in Karate, and that it's foundations do not lie in Kung Fu, but rather in Tegumi (also called Shima), which is a native Okinawan stand up grappling art, and that so many of the odd looking movements in the kata start to make sense when looking at them from the perspective of a stand up grappling/clinch fighting art rather than a long- to medium range striking art. Today, it's a belt wrestling style that uses a jacket for modesty/skin protection, but in the past it was jacketless and beltless. The jacket didn't come into Karate until after Jigoro Kano invented it for Judo, and Karate adopted it from them. The southern Kung Fu striking arts' (such as white crane, etc) influence came later, mostly after 1800, but Okinawa's vassal status to China began during the 1300s and didn't end until 1609, so it's possible that Tegumi was influenced by some form of Shuai Jiao.

Could i practice this with any large stick?

A stick is a stick😉, but some sticks are...stickier? seriously though, just use a 2 inch wooden dowel, pipe or pvc to get started. My advice if you want it when trying it out? Look less at the force that is produced, but the motion that creates the force. Start slow and easy first to find the motion 🤙🏼

@@taichibum haha thanks, I wasn't sure if any type of stick would work to practice this. Its very interesting that shuai jiao has a lot of equipment to drill certain movement patterns and types of power generation
