I'm from Baltimore, MD, but I lived In WV for six years when I was first married. Beautiful mountains, friendly people. We had a good time. Thanks for taking me back there.

im West Virginia born and raised and most people bash WV because they think its all trailer parks and hillbillies walking around with no shoes on and teeth missing but its actually a beautiful place and I'm glad you showed all of these people what WV truly is and how amazing it is

I love that the first thing a Brit is amazed at upon entering West Virginia is all of the trees. Being from a tree covered part of North Carolina, what I love about visiting England is the lack of trees.

As an ex-USN Radioman, when you say "over" in radio traffic, you're expecting an answer. When you say "out," you're finished with the radio traffic and not expecting an answer. You never say "over and out" together. Not saying you're wrong, just saying, By the way, I love green mountains with lots of trees too.

I have lived here my entire life minus time in the military. I visited Britain in 1986. I was amazed and awe inspired. My family has been traced back to England .

it's actually super common for Midwestern families to have east Kentucky/WV roots. Back when we made stuff, these are the people who manned many of the factories that needed labor. I'm sure you got an interesting cross section of American history/life.

This is such a fun video. I am an East Coast girl. I'm from PA, and West Virginia looks very much like many parts of my home state. It really is a beautiful part of the country. There are many places in WV that are so beautiful. You should try the Canaan Valley area. I, myself, live near Charleston WV. Wv, many times gets a bad rap because of the preconceived ideas that most get from what is portrayed on TV. Yes, it is mostly small towns, the economy makes it hard to find jobs depending where you live, but the people are beautiful, hard working, and genuine....Even with all of our problems, I think the hospitality makes people want to come back and folks who move away miss it so much.

The ranks of hills is what has kept this region -- like many other mountainous regions -- from prospering. Transportation of people and goods is difficult and there's not much space for towns (much less cities).

I was born in WV left when I was 7 and my family moved to Elkhart County, IN. Im 42 and now live back in the same holler my family is from in WV. Not a great place for 20 somethings cause not much job wise for them. It definitely is GREAT to visit recharge and retire ❤

Born in Ohio but moved to WV before I was one. Though I currently live in Orange County Virginia. I served 13 years in the WVARNG and I can’t express my appreciation for your kind words of my home state. Hill folk aren’t often painted in the correct pallet and the state is highly underestimated. We are a tough people.

Born in the coal mines of WV and glass factories, Union Carbide pollution and Zinc factories. We were not rich, it was hard living for most, everything is on a hill on in a holler, no flat land. But it was a great childhood and much of the pollution has been cleaned up now. Still hard to get jobs but the people of West Virginia are really kind and good folks. I moved away but still go back when I can, it is a special place. Proud to be a mountaineer.

Yr silly. Born & raised in WV (& left as soon as I turned 21, but return now & again to recharge), even I had to Google War. Wowzers. That's about as far south as u can get w/o leaving the state. It's cute that u see the wonder in just standing on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere. If u had time to actually visit some of WV's knobs & hollers, their rustic beauty would blow yr mind, that is, if the mountaintop removers haven't blown them off the map by now, sad to say. Look up places like Cooper's Rock State Forest, Chestnut Ridge Park, & New River Gorge National River for a broader perspective of our little state. Cheers!

I grew up in West Virginia. In fact I went to high school in War at Big Creek High School (class of 88). I lived about 15 minutes away in a small community called Coalwood.

I grew up in West Virginia and I have visited the Lake District. Both are beautiful but it is the trees that make Wet Virginia so pretty and the lack of trees and special light that makes the Lake District unforgettable.

As a person who's mom is from Boston and Dad is from West Virginia and had to endure that year to year. I used to save all my songs and internet media I liked upon visit. It kept me sane to the world I knew. Once I got there, which was for (a funeral or wedding) I did enjoy the family and the solitary nature of it. It reminded me I was human. We need it but we hate it. Its good for us momentarily. My family from there is so loving and great and enjoy things I've never thought I'd like. Meanwhile, from the city, I see a psychologist and I ponder my existence. Its two different worlds. I'm happy you have experienced it for better or worse.

I grew up on a farm in SW Pa - very much West Virginia's neighbor. Same amount of trees, same hills, same fine people, same country roads. Lived in Pa until I retired then moved to Fla. We are very much homesick and planning to go back.

When I was around 15 or so, went on a family vacation where we went white water rafting on the New River in WVA. Great memories from that trip.

Found this today even though I've followed your channel for a couple of years. I live around 60 miles north of Charleston, and you are right that residing here is not for those who are sincere urbanites (or for those unwilling to be pretty independent most of the time). Great video.

Your travelogue rekindles pleasant memories from long ago. As a youth in the early 1980s I and my family would make the eight hour journey from Chicago to Wheeling by car every summer to visit my paternal grandparents. Being one of the more bucolic areas of West Virginia with its enveloping forests and winding rivers, those visitations are some of the happiest memories of my adolescent years. The grandparents are long gone now and we haven't visited those mountainous and wooded environs in quite a number of years. I hope your trip was pleasant and you were able to make some friends among the fine folks who live down there.

If you were in the town of War, WV, its elevation is 1342 feet. Spruce knob, WV (highest elevation town) is at 4862 feet and thus, a difference of 3,520 feet higher than War. The lowest elevation in WV is at the Potomac river in at 240 feet above sea level, a difference of 4, 622 feet between highest and lowest points in the State.

I do not know how I missed this video! And to see the metropolis of War WV brought back lots of memories. War, Cucumber, Gary, all beautiful places with unique history. As a fellow Hoosier with WV roots, I appreciate this!

I was born in Beckley, WV 43 years ago, but grew up in South Florida. I never really got to see the state for what it is. One of these days, I'll get back to my roots and visit some family still there.
