Glad that you're back home - I enjoyed your joint presentation with Steve Donoghue. I have only read Annie Proulx's short story, "Brokeback Mountain", but I found your comments on her novels fascinating and will have to add them to my tbr list.

Hi, Micah. I’m a fellow Booktuber and found your channel through Steve Donoghue. As a fellow rock climber, I was excited to hear you’ve recently started climbing! Yay. Good for you!

Hi, Renee! Thanks so much for stopping by! It has been so much fun these last few months! I'm still climbing in gyms, but I'm really looking forward to getting outside one of these days on real rock. How long have you been climbing? Do you prefer bouldering or top rope?
@thelefthandedreader6632
@thelefthandedreader6632 6 месяцев назад
@@MicahCummins , oh it'll be SO fun when you do get outside. I'm 59 and began climbing when I was in my early 40s. I've always been athletic, so to speak, so when I made some friends in the gym that were climbers, I was ready for a change & a challenge. I love the freedom of bouldering and understand it's appeal, but because my friends were rope climbers, that's what I became. Mostly multi-pitch climbing areas and top roping. Bouldering is an excellent way to start outside climbing though!

Gosh it's good to see you back! I listened to the Shipping News audiobook back in the mid '90's and also own "Close Range: Wyoming Stories" and have read "Brokeback Mountain" from that collection. I enjoyed both. Sounds like "Barkskins" may be worth a look. I am not sure I am correct, but in my head, I pronounce her name as "PRU" rhyming with "true". Thanks for the video!
@MicahCummins

Thank you so much! It feels good to be back. :) I need to read her Wyoming Stories still, I think I will probably start with Brokeback Mountain, I found an audiobook for it through my library, so I might go ahead and download that for this week. Thank you for the pronunciation help! I am horrible at it sometimes. :)

Don't worry Micah, I've been holding the fort 😄 I put Barkskins on my TBR after you reviewed it, because I think it sounds right up my alley-- I love historical fiction and I enjoy long, immersive reads (and sagas, like with James Michener). It makes me think of the book Deep River by Karl Marlantes I recently purchased for Kindle. Have a good week!

Thanks, Anthony! :) I really think you will like Barkskins! Man, I really need to read some Michener soon. I haven't heard of Deep River, it sounds really interesting, I will have to look it up! Hope you have a great week as well, happy reading!

Looking forward to your Brattle haul. I was just there a few weeks ago myself, and had 40 pounds of books shipped back to me in California. They shipped it as media mail. Maybe I was lucky, but it arrived in just two days!

Thanks, Scott! Isn't the Brattle wonderful?! Wow, 40 pounds is very impressive! That's good to know that they got to you so quickly. I am still waiting for mine to show up, if my shipment follows the pattern of yours, then they should be here soon!

@@MicahCummins It's everything Steve claims it to be. Steve told me at the time I bought mine that one of his BookTube guests (was it David Murphy?) actually lugged his Brattle purchases home on the plane with him! Can you imagine? But maybe it was just a few books, not boxes full. But if so, I don't know how one gets out of the Brattle with such a light haul!

Welcome back! Compelling recommendations. I'm adding all of them to my tbr. I'm currently making my way through middlemarch, which is giving me immense happiness because the language is very clever and beautiful. I'm also reading Delivered from evil by Robert Leckie (Steve's recommendation) and learning so much about all the aspects of the second world war. I'm taking both of them slow so I'm quite happy with how much I recall after each read. Plus really(!!!) excited for the haul. Please don't disappear again after this tantalising announcement 😂.

I will film that haul as soon as I get my hands on the two boxes.

I understand Edgar Sawtelle is a retelling of a Shakespeare play. I won’t say which one so it doesn’t give away any of the plot. An amazing read. I wasn’t ready for that story ending. I’ve read it twice. The first time I was so angry when it was over, but finding out it was a retelling then re-reading, turned it into a five star read for me. His writing is beautiful.
@MicahCummins
@MicahCummins Год назад
I believe it is a Shakespeare retelling as well, Liz! I won't say which one either, just in case it might spoil it for someone! I agree with you, the ending took me by surprise as well, I read it a second time upon finishing, and I think I must have had a similar reaction to you, because it went straight to a five star read for me too. I loved his writing and style, it really was beautiful.

If you want a sprawling saga, try Herman Wouk's military family/WWII saga, The Winds of War, and the sequel, War and Remembrance. I'm not usually one for family dramas. But this was like a movie in my head. I remember the miniseries from back in the day, but I don't think I ever watched it. You couldn't avoid hearing about it. It was a huge event. I am now reading his other book, The Caine Mutiny. I may have to read all his books! Wouk may end up being a favorite author. That usually doesn't happen to me. I love his writing style. He draws you right in and it really does feel like a movie. I know exactly zero about the Navy / naval vessels. But I can't put this down.
