Cheers Al, good demonstration. Springs are handy, but cheapo bending machines are available on eBay for under 30 quid. As a Plumber, like you I carry a 15mm spring in my tool bag. But mostly use a bending machine👍👍 Hope you’re doing OK fella & staying away from the Kung Flu?

A couple of push fit connections for closing either end. Pipe needs to be filled with water or sand. Then slowly blend it over your knee. With practice a pipe bender is by far the best. 👍

Can you explain how back boilers (the ones that use to heat up water from the fireplace)used to work in properties in the 60’s
@emrankhanlearnwithme4474
@emrankhanlearnwithme4474 3 года назад
I’v removed the gas fireplace at my flat and found another old fireplace behind it under the chimney breast, it has a iron metal box and two 5cm approx pipes going out of it. Im guessing the logs or coal burnt in fire place would heat up the box which had water running through it then the hot water would come out the taps?
@rayc1503
@rayc1503 3 года назад
A back boiler fits in the recess behind a fireplace or gas fire. It uses the heat generated to produce hot water for central heating and domestic use throughout the home. The boiler itself is hidden behind the fireplace but needs a separate water tank and hot water cylinder to be stored somewhere else in the home. BB's are open flue which means they can be extremely dangerous. Especially if they aren't serviced annually. Always make sure you use a Gas Safe registered competent engineer. I've seen some lethal appliances whilst I've worked in this industry. Please aso ensure the room ventilation is never taped or blocked off. Carbon monoxide has no smell and can silently kill. I'd always recommend carbon monoxide alarms for open flued and flueless appliances.
@emrankhanlearnwithme4474
@emrankhanlearnwithme4474 3 года назад
I moved into the property in 1990 and just realised it was hiding behind there. My gas fireplace was disconnected in 2005 and just boarded up. So im just clearing up the chimney breast to seal up and plaster. But that back boiler has got me fascinated in how homes were heated back then, my mind is blown right now.

Hi, does anyone know how to bend flat copper pipes? I understand I'd have to stuff the flat copper pipes with, like, fine sand so that kinks won't form when bending. But is there a specific tool to bend flat copper pipes with?

Putting a shower in and limited to top water feed pipe on right side only and trying to figure what model as this pipe is about 5-6 inch showing with an Isolation Valve on the end to stop leak then rest under tiles with the flex and it is about 5 inch from the wall. I think I need to extend the pipe then bend at bottom to the left so it can connect to the shower. Could I use that method or an elbow? Do I saw the pipe to size or can I get specific lenths?
@dereton33

Easier to use an elbow, you will have to saw the pipe.
