Pretty good, I’m impressed. Don’t worry about it mate , nothing ever quite works well all the time. All we can do is to try our best and hopefully things will turn out well. Good advice, thank you

Rippled or not rippled with a bending spring is mainly a property of the copper. "Old" copper hardens and is more likely to ripple. Newer copper is softer and more malleable and less likely to ripple. (You can soften old pipe by heating then cooling. Also it is important to carefull inspect the spring along the length where the bending will take place. Often when removing the spring from a bend it can get stretched if not rotated anticlockwise when removing. A stretched spring (with open coils0 will cause rippled in the pipe. Ripples caused in a pipe bender is mainly due to friction. This can be overcome by using talcum poweder on the sliding surfaces as a lubricant. Nice video, thanks.

Excellent comment diymostthings! that is a good caution to apply. An stretched spring is useless! I've heard of greasing, but talcum would probably be better, and perhaps, withstand the heat of the just annealed tube.

There are BOTH Inside and Outside types of bending springs. Those with an end that resembles a little funnel are the EXTERNAL type, and those like the one in this video, have one or both ends slightly tapered, to make them easier to go INTO the tubing. Those internal springs usually have a ring on the end, to tie a cord and make it easier to pull them out of the tubing.

I have to admit I have never tried heating it up first (might be a bit hot when I go to bend it on my knee) In theory it should work . I have always found that the older the copper tube the easier it is to bend without ripples . When it is new and shiny that seems to be when the ripples happen . Kind regards, al.

i thought you would have mentioned to get a spring out of a pulled bend,you twist the end of the spring to the right.this reduces the outside diameter of the spring and it slides out.

Yes isnt it just typical after 40 years of bending copper pipe, that for the first time in front of the camera the tube decides not to crease up on the bend.O`well it just goes to show ya.Take no notice of me just put the spring in and bend.

Not sure if that is allowed in the US per code. Bending the pipe allegedly weakens the walls of the pipe at the point of bending. Good tip in a pinch though.

How do you get a very small dog legged bend? One that bends 45-90 degrees one way and then back again. But it has to be very small, total width i need is about 1 1/2" on 15mm pipe? Are there pipe benders with a very small circle for this? I have seen bits like this inside boilers occasionally, can't remember which ones now though.
@dereton33

You can buy pass over sets, but with a pipe bender you are restricted on how small a set you can make.

Dear dareton33, ¿will this method work for 1/2" dia, M (red, wall thickness ~0.028") and L type (blue, wall thickness ~0.040") pipe (tubing) sold in US for household water supply), please? (The copper pipe I mention seems very stiff to me). I want to make a large radius bend (but just for a short distance) on both ends of a 14" to 16" piece of said copper pipe (tube). Any and all comments welcome. Thank you for making and posting this video. God Bless. tonyd\.

dereton33: MAYBE, just maybe, the reason that the second bend did rippled is because almost all metals actually tend to harden when they are cold worked... Copper is sold in several different temper degrees, the soft copper tubing that comes coiled for gas installations is "annealed" and is very soft, so it can be deformed easily. The other common copper pipe or tube is commnly known as "rigid" or "Hard Drawn" and is much more difficult to deform. The first bend you performed was bent in a countinuous manner, so the copper "flowed" and did not rippled. In the second bend, as you stopped several times, you possibly gave the copper a chance to harden due to the bending, so it became a little harder and rippled more. At least it is what THEORY says (and of course, we ALL know theory almost never meets reality! Best wishes.
