Great guest. Please, in the future let the guest speak more. This why you have a guest on. So we can learn from him or her. Thanks.

What is foreign to me is that somehow strength training requires some sort of copious amounts of 'motivation'. If I don't work out w/weights I feel similar to not brushing my teeth or not showering. It's just a normal, daily thing to do.

I was the same. After hitting 43, I wanted to find a good strength program. Read Rippetoe’s and Sullivan’s books about barbell lifts and it has changed me on a molecular level.

I have enjoyed the podcast and have listened to all of them up to now and have had a lot of fun and found them informational. This podcast included. However, as noted by several people, I would like to hear the guest speak more. Abeel came to talk about a dr. - coach relationship and he barely got to expand on it! It was clear Abeel was getting increasingly frustrated as the talk went on. I hope he is able to improve the cardiac doctor's understanding of exercise.

This is fascinating. It is amazing how bad the modern life is for us, and how much a few changes can affect us. I watched a lecture by Dr. Jason Fung that was fascinating.

What are the recommendations to get started after heart attack? How much and when? As Rip said, he started his friend out with bar only. How does the progession or method differ?

I agree with almost everything said here, but lowering blood sugar from 300 to 85 in two weeks with lifting alone is hard to believe. There is no doubt lifting does increase insulin sensitivity and lower BS. I have tracked it, but really, 300 to 85 sounds too good to be true.

So basically strength training along with improving the quality of your food intake is the prescription even for folk with cardio problems along with post cardiac surgery folk.

Difference is, when you lift, your muscles push blood into the vessels, while the lungs push onto them, resulting in squeezed blood vessle walls

Doctors seemed trained to treat patients like an assembly line. They are over-worked. I try to work with my doctor by learning as much as possible about the health problems he assesses because he doesn't have time to learn about how blood readings and similar tests affect someone that lifts heavy and eats a high protein diet. All I want from a doctor is one that will listen to me when I refuse something and not try to pressure me into taking every medication he thinks I should have. Those are the worst type of doctors. The ones that think they're knowledge is from up on high and shouldn't be questioned even when they know they are over-worked and treating me like every other human regardless of what I do differently in life. Smart doctors work with you. Dumb doctors treat you like an idiot. Doctors should be happy with patients that take an interest in their health, not offended.
@illestdomer2005
@illestdomer2005 5 лет назад
Totally agree that they are overworked. They’re not the problem. The insurance companies, the concept of health care is a right, and poor diet/exercise make their jobs harder.

More contradictions in this one too. Rippetoes dietician with the jerrycurl Santana advocates for a high protien high carb low fat diet while training. Whats with the carb hate in this one?

Been lifting since 20, thirty eight years now, never used any drugs at all, am ridiculously fit, look thirty something, deadlift 400+, and haven't even had a cold for at least 15 years. Body fat is never ever even close to 15%. People are mind numbingly lazy

I think using word stress for a positive adaptation is a bit misleading even though it is accurate but for a better understanding i would use word stimulation instead of stress. Cus it becomes confusing when you start talking about negative and positive stress only using word stress. At least for an ordinary person i think. Ofc you might say we are type casting and we font care about people who dont get it... but The fix could be using separate words for positive and negative stress like stimulation and stress or just add the positive and negative when refering to stress. I know it is only my view. It doesnt mean it ia correct ;)

What Rip is saying and has been saying for many years is that a lot of this, in fact MOST of this, is just common sense, which apparently can be overcome all too easily if a dumb-ass puts on a white coat and tell you the opposite, as MOST family or regular practitioners do. In fact even this Doctor PRIOR to reading Rip's books thought like the rest, and even this doctor was obese to a large extent... I just hope this doctor can open the eyes of many more. A hard and difficult task to be sure. Most doctors tell someone the complete opposite of what plain sight or plain seeing demonstrates to anyone paying attention, and the person ('patient") just takes this buffoon's word for it. Rip's an asshole, but I rather deal with an asshole that knows what the fuck he's talking about.... in this area and all other areas, doctors, mechanics, etc, I rather deal with a rude ass if he knows what he is talking about.

Medicine is there to let people live without a change in lifestyle, imo. Medicine is not there to make anyone's lifestyle revolve around strength training. Physical Therapist need the "evidence" to start changing surgical protocols. Just...provide it. Put it in the literature and then they will follow.
