Hey I'm Brian with Next Level Homestead. If this is your first time here... welcome! I'm glad you're here! If you're a longtime friend, welcome back!!
For most of my life I was a city boy, gardening in the suburbs. I was the first generation in my family to not grow up on a farm and somehow it was still there inside me. So now my wife Emilie, son Noah and I have moved to a small farm (at least it will be) and we're documenting our journey on this channel. Building gardens and chicken coops, buying a dairy cow and who knows what else lies in store. But we can't wait to take you with us!

Lived in a small CO mountain town. Black Bear came through the alleys at exactly 4:45 AM. Mountain Lions walked the alleys at night. Coyotes, skunks, raccoons, and more. None of them bothered me, my garden, my pets.

I was born and raised in that area of North County. We had a spate of mountain lion sightings at the end of South Twin Oaks and Gopher Canyon in the early 80’s. My parents first house was on S Twin Oaks near the intersection of what was then known as Myrtle Ave (now a rerouted Barhan Dr) in San Marcos. A Twin Oaks turned into dirt road at what is now Craven Rd then turned into a narrow trail. Up and over that hill there was a large pond. People would hike up to that pond and would see a large mountain lion around that pond. Of course, back then, you would see groups of coyotes running down the street thanks the old Prohoroff egg ranch that’s where Cal State San Marcos now sits.

Best gardening channel ever! Everything is beautiful. You are so personable and friendly; you and Emillie are just the best. The pumpkins are beautiful and the purple pepper. I’m sorry about the watermelons. The roof-wing it? Lol. Bacon in the salad? Really? No, no, no. Lol. The funny part about the “cougar clip” was you trying to be sober faced before showing it. Lol. What are the hornworms when they mature? Do they eat something else beside tomatoes? Please don’t kill all of them. So great to know viewers have so generously contributed to the homestead. I know your channel is not supposed to be comedic but, I always laugh through them. For me they are fun. Thanks so much for sharing. Many, many, blessings

I came here to ask the same thing. Several gardeners I know say to cut the water for a bit before picking because it sweetens the watermelon up. Bet that salad would be extra good with a Crenshaw melon too instead of a regular cantaloupe.

I just wanted to let you know a site named Toscana sells yard art and statues. I have bought some dragon rain gutter spouts from them. They fit over the ends of the downspout and spew out water. They also have gargoyles for the roof top. Just thought you might want to look for your cottage. So good to see the family. Looks like Noah likes finding the worms. Really cool how they glow in the dark. Hope the cougar moves on and bothers someone else.

I watch both your channels. Love them both because I have many interests with gardening being a big one. Love what you do! I grew up in Northern California near the Oregon border. Yum, adding the bacon!!!! It certainly is true that this channel feels like friends across the internet. It's really no surprise that so much generosity is coming your way. It's reciprocal maintenance given how much you have so openly and candidly offered over the years. Cougars/mountain lions/pumas are showing up in the hills near me in the East Bay. There have been numerous recent sitings. Thankfully, not down in my neighborhood where coyotes have definitely been a more common concern. As always, it's always a pleasure and a learning experience to watch both your channels. Thank you so much, Brian!

I've been reading up on watermelon since I decided to try growing this year in my Earthbox. Due to lack of space I got 3 small melons (about 5-8 lbs each). Worked for me, I didn't think I'd get any in zone 6b. The pigtail is the first sign but not the best. Other things to look for are: the skin goes from bright & shiny to dull and the bottom (side lying on the ground) is a light cream color or white. Another thing mentioned was to not water the melons a few days before harvest to increase sweetness. The 3 I got were the Moon & Stars Yellow melons. A lot of seeds, but very sweet. Good luck for next year on watermelons if you try again.

A mountain lion's habitat range can be between 10 and 400 square miles, with adult males ranging the farthest, so you may not see your macho kitty for a while. That coyote tells me the cat is probably not around. We never had coyotes in sight when our macho kitty was nearby. My son made a watermelon salad very similar to yours, and it was amazing. He may have added some finely chopped serranos since he likes things spicy. I gave up growing watermelons here in the East County as mine always turned out just like yours looked, with poor flavor. Looking forward to seeing the chicken coop wrapped up.

That melon salad looked delish! I winced when I saw the dropped watermelon. I have tried growing watermelons a few times and the most I ever got was a delicious TINY watermelon. Mostly, I get nothing. Yours are doing much better. One day you will pick one just right and it will be delicious. I think this channel is more fun. It feels like it is just you doing, thinking, and living. The other feels more a bit more formulaic, which is understandable, but not as charming. I would be scared about my animals and the new cow with a mountain lion roaming around, though I would love to give the mountain lion some space as well. I hope it can live peaceful with your neighborhood.

The salty feta brings out the flavors of the basil and melons. Basil loves dairy - and makes dairy (cheese and eggs) taste even better. The cukes with the slight green bitterness and feta saltiness also works together. "Companion planting salad !"

your friendly conservation agents usually can help identify that and maybe help if there have been regular sightings. not sure if its same in your state but worth a shot. keep your eyes peeled if thats a cat. they should leave you alone unless they get reallt .. hungry. i had a skunk issue- i used fox urine dribbled about - any hunting supply, got rid of skunk, but then i had fox. lol

I have always heard to wait until the actual stem starts to dry out. That it should not be green. And when I buy them at the grocery store the stems are usually not green.

I’m so jealous of your pumpkins! Here in east Maui even a GUARANTEED NOT TO GET BUGS kombucha squash could not survive the worms. I have watermelon in a raised bed planter with tulle on it and have pollinated some tiny fruits but they are still dying off😫

Great video 👏👏 especially you carrying water melons in , just Love that look on your face 🤣 My watermelons were great this year I got 3 of them off 1 plant , 2 of 25 - 27.9 lb and 1 smaller one super sweet and juicy But my cantaloupe weren’t so good, they were small, and not sweet at all, even though it was called “sugar kiss”

Good news is that the chickens are happy 😁. I hope your new Kitty 🐅 plays nice with the other animals in the homestead.

I had a completely full mouth of food and still shouted “oh no!” when you dropped your watermelon. Sadder than a kid dropping their ice cream ☹️

I live in northern Idaho. We have a lot of cougars here. They stay clear of most humans. We also have cameras out to watch the wild life. It is great to see.

The watermelons are not ripe. I agree with everyone else stem should be dry and firm. Leave the others longer and you will get some. Plants look great! How about a Give away for some of those dragon Fruit cuttings??😊😊😊
