A Crap Guide to D&D [5th Edition] - Alignment 

my real thoughts on using alignment: don't just play your character to whatever their personality is and don't worry about alignment!

"Characters can only be one alignment forever" Reminds me how someone filled out one of these meme alignment charts completely with just Zuko from ATLA at various points of the story.

I like being Lawful Evil and driving exactly the speed limit. I laugh and twirl my handlebar moustache as people angrily change lanes to go 5MPH faster than I am, or patiently stack up behind me.

I had a character take a huge shift of alignment after the party bullied him enough and the god of darkness approached him to give him power and respect. So he went from Chaotic Good to Lawful Evil. It surprisingly worked.

Actual JoCat: A delicate flower almost in bloom Wiggler-Kun: Doomguy from the Doom comic but somehow more aggressive

Lawful Good: Determined to get their party to stay away from the grass they're not allowed to walk on because there's a sign that clearly says they're not allowed to do that. Neutral Good: Doesn't walk on grass because they saw the sign and merely asks the party if they could be careful as they don't want to get into any trouble. Chaotic Good: Digs and entire path underground for his party to get past the grass. Lawful Neutral: Flies over the grass so they can take a shorter route and not crush the grass. True Neutral: Just walks around the grass and let's those who want to walk on grass get in trouble. He's not their dad. Chaotic Neutral: Takes the sign with them and probably draws a face on it. Leaving those who ignorantly walked on the grass to their fate. Lawful Evil: Chops a path through the grass so they're not walking on it. Neutral Evil: Ignores the sign and walks on grass normally. Chaotic Evil: Burns all of the grass so there is no grass to walk on.

My favorite character ever was LE. He was a fill in for a character that died early-mid campaign and was a straight up mercenary hired by the king to ensure that the 'Heroes' were sticking to the script of supporting his power plays with the neighboring counties. After a few sessions, the party had started planning to do many very naughty things, and as such, the response they received from an LE merc straightened them out right fast. "Good plan, but if you really want to burn out the cultists, we need to ensure proper air flow into the mines. use your spells to open up tiny shafts and then pump cloud kills and poison smoke into the main shaft, then collapse the exits." "Oh, good idea with taking out the foreign saboteurs, but why are we just going to let this chance at a good frame job go to waste? Animate that corpse, Then I'll put on that other ones outfit, and lets go get our neighbor in on this war.... Well it is one now that they are trying to kill the king, so lets make it 2v1 instead. Beside, the our soon to be allies pay well for adventurers right? We can double up and earn twice the pay" "Hey Leader, I love tha plan you have for these POWs, and I think you are making the right choice. You be good cop, and only burn them when they lie, I'll be bad cop, and burn them for fun! I think you will make a great Blackguard some day, just gotta take that last step from the old 'Boss', and the first step towards a new one, eh" Never did see a bunch of murder-hobos straighten up and fly right so fast as when my Merc started agreeing with them. DM even let me 'turn evil' at the end when the BBEG offered to buy my contract once the king was dead. I was balanced into the encounter and everything.

I'd actually love to read a webcomic starring his little characters.

Personally, it really helps me to have one small baseline to stick to. Someone told me Chaotic Neutral is “I help the people that help me. That’s how we survive.” As someone who has never played a single game of DnD and is terrified of being inconsistent, this is really helpful.

It’s hard to come up with a lawful evil character, the only one I’ve ever come used was a 12 year old Warlock contracted to a fiend who was acting as their parental figure. Meaning they always followed “moms rules” making them lawful but “moms rules” made me actively harm others or ignore them getting harmed, Making them evil. Lawful evil is surprising easy to role play and i never argued with my party members often because I “moms rules” never actively went against them.

The fact that Jocat has to explain that it's a joke despite having a LITERAL DISCLAIMER IN EVERY VIDEO upsets me.

Lawful: follows a code (either the law or a personal code) Chaotic: act in their own self interest, morals often flexible Good: going out of your way to be nice Evil: going out of your way to be mean, or allowing bad things to happen without caring how it effects others LG: Good for the sake of Justice NG: Good for goodness’ sake CG: Good for goodness’ sake no matter the method LN: Acting on orders TN: Depends on the situation CN: Follows their heart LE: Evil within the bounds of the law NE: Evil for personal gain CE: Just wants to watch the world burn I wrote this for myself please don’t stab me for being redundant or wrong

The best way to create a character in DnD is with two questions: (1) What does your character want? (2) What are they willing to do to get it? By answering those two and basing all your character choices around those answers, you've got like 80% of your character work done. The other 20% is deciding whether those answers change throughout the game. This is literally just the alignment chart but actually tailored to your character. What they want is the Good-Evil scale, and what they are willing to do is the lawful-chaotic scale, except these questions allow you to actually determine personal motivations for your character.

the fact jocat needs to point out he's doing a bit, genuinely hurts my brain.

I personally like to consider alignment as a way of conceptualizing the thought process the character may have around rules, governments, their place in society, and their priorities.

Lawful Evil is perfect for evil Warlocks, as it means that they're so good at keeping promises that they made a deal with a higher power with a consequence of eternal damnation or nonexistence

My current DM has been known to tell us, “you’re chaotic good, not chaotic stupid”

In my group we don't use alignments. I'm the DM and I want the characters to grow and develop without being chained to some alignment. We never had any trouble with this arrangement and it lead to some great stories so far.

My wizard is lawful evil. He's a bounty hunter who resurrects murder victims, finds out who killed them then goes to return the favor

Unironically a better guide to alignment than 90% of them.

I feel like having characters which fall within the Neutral spectrum often either hit the "party mediator" or "party spectator" role.

I know I'm being ironic on this, but Yoshikage Kira is Lawful Evil. In his famous introductory speech, he lists his daily life, and how he follows a strict schedule. For anyone that's confused, there is a moment where you can see a Jojo alignment chart at 1:13.

A disclaimer? Who would get offended by comedic genius and over a game?

I like thinking of the evil allignments as DBZ villians: Freeza is lawful evil, he believes there should be an empire, his empire and nothing else. Cell is neutral evil, he enjoys fighting and doesn't care how many people die while he does what he likes. He makes rules but breaks them whenever he feels like it, and just wants to show that he is the strongest in the universe. Finally Kid Buu is chaotic evil. He is pure emotion and kills and destroys on a whim. He even stops to nap in the middle of his battles.

When we started our campaign, I had an idea of my character but didn't really know which alignment to choose (this is my first time playing), so I started as true neutral and then throughout the campaign I did what I thought she would do and she evolved into lawful good!! ^.^

I think most people use alignment backwards. "I want this character to be Chaotic Good so they act like this" Vs "I've developed my character thoroughly and they usually act like this so they fit mostly into Chaotic Good" Imo, it's better to have a your actions be the reason your character is an alignment, rather than use your alignment as a reason for the character's actions.

How is it that "Crap Guide to D&D: Alignment" is a more sensible guide to how alignments work than most serious works?

Once I refused to step on the grass during a game but every time we were in the throne room, I’d step on the throne. I’m proud of this.

"Good is going out of your way to help an old lady cross the street. Neutral is helping the old lady cross the street since your going the same way. Evil is helping the old lady cross the street and then making her pay for your services."

I use a system I made called Morality and Discipline scores. You have two scores from 0-100 which correspond to coordinates on the alignment chart. Your morality score is how good/evil you are, and your discipline score is how lawful/chaotic you are. 0,0 is as chaotic evil as possible, and 100,100 is as lawful good as possible. Your alignment changes when one or both scores change between 33/34 and 65/66. The DM instructs you to add or subtract from either score based on your actions/decisions. Usually only 1 or 2 points at a time, unless you do something really out of fucking character like have your lawful good paladin murder 20 peasants on the streets while singing a lullaby. This becomes really relevant if you add in some magic items that are alignment locked, and bring back alignment restrictions for deities, oaths, commitments, etc.

My favorite character I've played took so long to figure out an alignment for. He's a Tiefling Barbarian who speaks in a folksy accent, insists on acting politely, is utterly faithful to his wife, and believes ripping someone limb from limb is "having a spirited debate". He is both the most gentle character I've ever created and the most brutal. After over two years, I decided he qualifies as Lawful Evil. He's just the strangest character ever to exist in said alignment.

in my campaign, the so-called “chaotic good” edgy elf ranger has been trying to kill me in-game due to an irl grudge, so the DM made them chaotic evil

I felt that "Devil's advocate" line about True Neutral.

It's been 2 years and I'm still surprised at how accurate this is especially since it's coming from someone who clearly doesn't like alignment.

1:15 for this bread related one, I do a mix of two of them. I twist the opening to make it easier to put the bag clip on, I then put said clip on said opening and then I tuck it under in case. (BTW breadboxes do almost nothing to keep the bread safe unless it’s air tight).

they're more what you'd call "guidelines" than actual rules

I think most of my characters, including myself, would land on the lawful side of the chart. But probably not lawful good, most likely lawful neutral or lawful evil.

My favorite thing that we used to do in D&D was just making up alignments some of my favorites included: AAAAAAAAAAAAA (that belonged to a barbarian) Chaotic Bastard (sorcerer) Bees (druid)

Had a buddy that played true neutral as "I don't have an opinion on anything." It was...frustrating.

What I do for my characters: There’s an instinct, a subconscious mentality they follow. Circumstances and bonds can overwrite this in the moment, but it takes time to change the core for good. Character 1: Core: Neutral Good. Reaches out to others, tries to understand them better and become friends. Other behaviors: He is slow to trust, dislikes authority, is the voice of caution, and chooses flight and analysis over fight. _The two sessions of PTSD:_ Core switched to Chaotic Neutral, with high self preservation instincts. Character 2: Core: Chaotic Good. The world is new and exciting (uncouth to new things), and values freedom. Other behaviors: Knows she is a rare and exotic race, and how to act elegant and regal to receive better treatment. Wears her heart on her sleeve, yet bottles up her negative emotions while she’s smaller… Planned character: Core: Chaotic Neutral. So long as he can live how he wants, he’s fine. Takes every shortcut and easy way out. Other behaviors: Goes with the flow, letting others make the plans. Prefers indirect combat, such as using Dream to make villains die of exhaustion after a week (Xanathar rule).
