Baldur's Gate 3 has two types of character interactions: Casual racism and ranked competitive racism

I do not condone racism, HOWEVER, as a narrative tool, it can make compelling stories. Not to mention, it is literally in the lore that most people are not trusting of tieflings. You know, BECAUSE THEY LOOK LIKE DEVILS! Coming from someone whose first character ever was a tiefling, I hope this puts things into perspective.

Humans are still the best race for power building in 5e, because they get a free feat at 1st level.

Doesn't Tasha's custom lineage just let you get that feat with any race now?
@Zander2212
@Zander2212 Год назад
@WillTBear1 functionally, Custom Lineage is its own race which you can flavor however you want. It's just as good as Variant Human, or maybe slightly better because you can get Darkvision.

I don't know I usually play a half-drow and because of their half elf versatility they kind of break the game

Zander, while I respect your opinion here, I don't play D&D to be a min-maxing munchkin. I play D&D to roleplay an adventure. I'm already a human, so fuck that boring-ass shit.

JoCat did indeed include every race that had come out at the time of the video. And I really applaud this video in particular because at the time this video was originally released, some races had...issues. Kobolds and Orcs for example, were the only races that had any stat penalties (this was later removed). Orcs were actually a big sore point of Volo's Guide because they were almost always worse than Half-Orcs in both overall stats and racial abilities. I know a lot of dms who just straight up allowed players to be Full Orcs lorewise but Half-Orcs mechanically because it was that much of an issue, and it wasn't really fixed until the Eberron book was released. The other sore point of Volo's was that Yuan-Ti Purebloods were considered way too strong and outright banned by numerous tables, because they had "Magic Resistance" as a racial feature, which let them make saving throws against spells with advantage. The books eventually got a bit better at balancing races as they released, but no one really forgot how over the place Volo's Guide was with race balance. I'm just happy JoCat didn't go into the subraces, because then he would have been on elves for like, 3 whole minutes. Seriously. Elves. Got. So. Many. SUBRACES. IN 5E!!!

@wesleyjudson599
@wesleyjudson599 Год назад
Actually, in Volo's guide, there were a list of races that were explicitly not balanced. Yuan-ti, Orcs, and Kobolds were all in that list, in addition to a different list of balanced racial options So, when complain about yuan-ti too powerful, they are literally ignoring the description in the book saying; "these races haven't been balanced. Talk to your GM. Its on you if you play something underpowered." etc... I say because their should actually be more unbalanced races like the ones in Volo's, not less, and the rebalancing in Mordenkainen Presents makes the races less interesting, and ironically, less balanced.

The reason Tieflings are hated is because 95% or more of the world only knows fiends and fiend-kin as hells spawn who seek to destroy all life on the material plane because that is what they have heard through rumor and bard story. Tieflings are surprisingly rare despite what Baldur's Gate 3 would have you believe. what IS realistic about BG3 is that Tieflings often band together to support each other. So what would you do as an average farmer or peasant, who has most likely never seen magic in person, and has only ever MAYBE heard of the despicable evils of the Hells and its residents through the occasional minstrel or bard passing through town to retell an epic; if what looks EXACTLY as described in the stories walked into your village?
@aikidodude05
@aikidodude05 Год назад
bg3 really takes a lot of liberties with the whole race. fun game but they really make tieflings out like they are their own thing and not random chance. for those that don't know tieflings can be born from two humans because of demonic bloodlines which is why they are so hated because they can literally come from a human couple and is a manifestation of the demonic ties an ancestor had, it can literally be 10 generations ago and then boom tiefling baby all of a sudden.
@ShikiRen
@ShikiRen Год назад
I certainly have had a changeling I played be a sus (in 3.5 though). Was posing as a catfolk rogue until the moment I got infected with rat-lycanthropy. Changelings have the shapeshifter subtype, however, and those cannot be lycanthropes... so I switched back to my baseform... the reaction of the rest of the party was PRICELESS. They really thought I was playing a catfolk until then.

The one tiefling that I have recently played never got hate then again she had a TON of influence in her home kingdom she was a major inventor (prosthetic limbs) and even had to use one herself as she blew her right arm off in an experiment. She owned a very successful company and held military contracts later in the game (she literally sold dwarves 2 crates of revolvers for a boat)

As someone who has had at least half my characters be tieflings, I can confirm the general npc hates me. Of course, I then retaliate by destroying the world...what. you thought that Great Old One Warlock was just for spell flavor? Misanthropy paired with racism really helps with that 'death of all things' thing.

In defense of the BG3 racism, it is actually a world lore thing related to a couple published adventure modules. Descent into Avernus, which is referenced a lot in game, is where a whole town got dragged into aforementioned Avernus, one of the Hell realms. Several townsfolk got turned into tieflings, some were "made" during the years the town was trapped. When the town finally got returned to the material plane, the remaining human/non-tiefling townsfolk chased out the tieflings, in part because they blamed them for everything (it wasn't actually their fault), but in larger part because they were constant reminders of their trauma.

Although as jocat says, the races don't really matter that much. you can still make it important. i'm never forgetting the story of Krod the half-Orc Rogue who uses intimidation to increase his stealth since only two things see Krod. Dead things and things that know better than to admit it. xD he is also known as the Angry Carpenter xD

Look I'm not a furry ok *BUT* on my first time playing D&D (a 5 part one to boot as well) the DM made us face a dragon and to his detriment said she's the strongest in the land feared by even the Demon king who we had to beat so me being a *DINGUS* rolled to you quest it fuck the dragon and make her my wife (not a monster fucker and furry btw) and by the grace of cosmos i rolled a nat 20 and that's the story of how I'm never allowed to play D&D with my cousin ever again 😂
@Blitzwaffen

Congrats you're not a furry. Those interested in things with scales are called scalies. /S In all seriousness, the general attempt to woo the dragon is like a right of passage for D&D players. Nothing wrong with that.

so as someone who has actually played genasi, earth genasi in fact the answer is pretty simple to why so many play them. Genasi are just human+ yes lore wise they have lots of interesting ways of coming into being but when you play them on they table they pretty much play just like a human with out actually "being" human. want to play a human but not get called basic? want to be human rogue try air genasi, maybe a fighter is what you want cant go wrong as a earth genasi. how about a wizard well fire is right up your alley, or maybe you want a calm cleric well the calming water is for you!!

My favorite character of all time was a 3.5 Tiefling cross classed Paladin / Monk who looked surprisingly close to a cross between Scar and Edward Elric for Fullmetal Alchemist. His personality was pretty heavily defined by being a little fringey for most paladins and the life long goal of finding his arch-demon grandfather … And stabbing him in the face. (You know, typical family drama).

my characters are a red dragon-blooded sorceress with a fascination with fire and a hunger for reading books, a necromancer who's idea of 'survival' is taking control(from the shadows) of the strange city he lives in, a tiefling twilight cleric, and a wood elf barbarian. I guess I like things that don't make a lot of sense. :)

The D&D Races I've played the most so far have been Drow Elf and Warforged. Also played Firbolg, Gnome, Triton, and Tabaxi (which was the first race I played; a Tabaxi Artificer Artillerist). Kobold is next when we play DND after some Pathfinder (where I'll be a Kitsune AKA one of many races you won't find in DND that Pathfinder does have unless one decides to homebrew).
