Balat, Istanbul is characterized by its narrow streets, colorful houses, and variety of restaurants and cafes. We made this wonderful neighborhood just outside of Fener our home base in Istanbul for over a month. After spending so much time there we thought it would be a great idea to give some ideas on how to spend one day in Balat!
The traditional Turkish breakfast available at Kaffa Miro is genuinely a gem of Balat, Istanbul. The restaurant does not overly advertise itself like most places in the area, so you might walk right past it 20 times if you don't take the time to peak inside. The beautiful back patio has smooth jazz music playing and an extremely earthy feel to it. We quickly realized that there was no better way to start our day while living in Balat. The full pot of Turkish tea certainly helps!
The shopping in Balat has a much wider range of items than any other area of Istanbul we explored. There are certainly plenty of the traditional Turkish trinket and souvenir shops, but we also found a wide range of artisan sellers and vintage stores. All in all, it was a much better shopping experience than the grand bazaar (Watch our experience with the Grand Bazaar here: • ISTANBUL'S TOURIST ATT... ).
Perhaps our favorite restaurant in all of Balat is where we shared our dinner experience in this video: The New Balat Cafe Restaurant. In the span of a month we had Turkish tea, baklava, and dinner more than 10 times here. We became great friends with the staff and we can not recommend this spot enough!
