A Different Understanding of American Patriotism | Deval Patrick | TED

American democracy cannot be great until it is good, says lawyer, Harvard professor and former governor of Massachusetts Deval Patrick. A self-identified patriot, Patrick stands behind the fundamental values and civic ideals that he believes make the US unique -- and outlines how the country has strayed from those same edicts. Calling for a collective patriotism free from cynicism and fatalism, Patrick underlines the urgency to reset national aspirations in order to save democracy.

Patriotism isn't "my country is great", it's "I want my country to be great". The difference being the willingness to admit when things are bad, and work to make them better.

I have generations of family members who served in the armed forces part due to the draft but my Grandfather still promoted and supported going to the military . Coming from Mississippi he knew about the racism " I think it was a way out of our hard condition" but my family a military background going back to DAMN EVERY AMERICAN WAR although I can only go back to WW2 but I'm sure my grandfather has family before him who served. I guess that makes me patriotic "

Gov. Patrick, you have here said, far better than I ever have, a message that I have been trying to get across in countless debates for many years. For me it began in the wake of the second Iraq war, when we began wiretapping our own citizens without warrants, torturing people in secret facilities around the world, detaining people without any kind of process or charges in Guantanamo Bay. "America is better than this," I would say. But I prefer your very apt "we cannot be great without being good." I will be quoting you.

"It's time to shout kindness, compassion, justice..." Thank you for this inspiring talk. I share a quote from Steps to Knowledge that seems relevant to the Governor's remarks: "Today I will not try to get even with God. Do not try to get even with God by being a miserable person, for God only knows you as part of Creation. Do not try to get even with God by making the world destitute, for God created a world of beauty and opportunity. Do not try to get even with God by refusing to love and accept yourself, for God still knows you as you are..." When we act out of a belief system of cynicism, fear and mistrust, aren't we telling God that we don't accept what God created within us? For God did not create this belief system and when we can look objectively at it, we can see that it is a set of fixed ideas that our minds have created based on our conditioning, not on reality. "Do not accept this structure as your reality, for the outward manifestation of your mind is a structure that you have imposed upon it. Yet its real inward harmony and nature seek only to be expressed. To enable this to happen you must have an adequate structure in the mind to enable the mind to express itself in the physical world without restraint or distortion." This is the mind God gave us, not the one we made up for ourselves. Then we can speak, even shout from a place of freedom and truth for kindness, compassion, and justice. Isn't this preferable to anger and fear? (excerpts from Steps to Knowledge, Marshall Vian Summers)

DISCLAIMER: Personal Opinion. To me a Nations/Countries are like business employers. What benefits do they have? Is their work environment good? Where do I see myself in the future in that company or not? I mean you should have some sense of where you are born but, I don't wanna feel indebted to it. Since nobody chooses where to be born. I'm no patriot. And will be happy to move anywhere that provides me with better benefits. And in return I provide the headcount and some percentage of the economy there. So when countries ask me for their loyalty...I don't want to provide it for free. I need to receive compensation to be loyal. Human needs baby.
@jmd1980
@jmd1980 Год назад
Yeah but all the best places, like good companies, are hardest to get into. And not everyone can afford to just move, just like can't just quite a job, when you are caught in a cycle. And I say this as someone who by pure luck manage to break that cycle and moved to one of hardest countries to get citizenship in (Switzerland). It's not something everyone can just go or want to do.

When a huge portion of the populace cannot afford a photo ID then you are disenfranchising them, which is a threat to democracy. Make photo ID free and automatic for all, then we'll talk about it.

@jmd1980

We both know it's more then just that though. Sure photo ID isn't hard to get, but there are other forms of ID one could accept but they single this one method out for a reason. But that's not even the biggest issue. It's the restrictions on mail / absentee voting, voting locations, funding and resources in certain areas, gerrymandering, issues go on and on. Photo ID is just a nonsense talking point to frustrate the topic before it gets anywhere.

@np5246
@np5246 Год назад
He's using "patriotism" as a guise to promote the Democrat platform. That's the problem. He clearly cares more about the Democrat platform than he does the US Constitution (which says "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.")
@jmd1980
@jmd1980 Год назад
@@np5246I think you forget that the current Democrat platform just happens to promote patriotic and liberal ideals, because that's what their voters want. It's about the ideals of the people in the end. And that's what a Democracy is. So we need to stop acting like it's some agenda being pushed, it's being sourced. If you don't like what is being said talk to your neighbors. And then think about if you're seeing the same thing with the Republican platform, does it seem as genuine and sourced? Or people in power just doing what benefits themselves while they fire up their base with talking points that help no one.
