Moon is the most underrated QB in NFL history, robbed of his prime younger years he still made the HOF, and threw the best ball I've ever seen to this day.
For those who says blacks can’t play QB, Warren Moon did it in college, CFL, NFL than made the HALL OF FAME. He was a winner in all level. The man could pass.
It's a crime that this man was robbed so much because of his race and still ended up being an all-time great and hof'er even though they stole his mostly nfl prime.......Love Warren Moon!
As kids learning football we knew about Joe Montana, John Elway, and Jim Kelly but when we seen Warren Moon for the first time we were blown away. A professional football qb that was black like us! We fought over who got to be Warren moon in our backyard football wars. The good old days.
Facts fam..I grew up a football junkie loving the oilers / bills fan..watching the run & shoot and k gun offense.. alot of oiler games growing up in houston.. seen alot of great qb play..moon,Kelly, elway, marino, Montana, young,Favre, Cunningham etc..those 90s qbs were tough..now I'm a titans fan
I grew up watching him. I was never an Oiler fan but was always a Moon fan. I looked up to him. The way he carried himself on the field and off. He was sich a TRUE PROFESSIONAL
Warren was a very special mentor & friend up here in cold Edmonton. Warren always remembered who you were & asked how your family was doing. So great to see him Edm.Eskimos reunion yrs ago! The Best in Football Ever🤩💯
CJ Stroud vibes. Both from L.A., both the man of the house at a young age, both "not smart enough to play QB in the NFL," both throw a picture perfect ball. Hope CJ can bring one home for Warren.
Oilers choosing Cody Carlson over Warren Moon is one of the greatest personnel blunders in NFL history. Carlson hurt his knee and shoulder, played terribly in five games, finished the season on IR, flunked his offseason physical, and never played again in the NFL.
Maybe in hindsight you could argue that. But it wasn’t an idiotic move at the time. Warren was getting close to 40, was struggling with some injury troubles, and eventually teams move forward. Cody in the years leading up to the move had played well enough and the games he filled in 1992 and 1993 the team didn’t drop off and still won games. And in the end the fall off that cliff led to Steve McNair so long term it worked out in their favor honestly. It may have been bad at first but in true hindsight landing McNair was the long term better outcome.
Born in 1965 in Edmonton I have so many memories of going to Eskimo games and watching him hook up with Brian Kelly at WR. 5 consecutive Grey Cup championships! Truly the best!!!
In 1997....i got tickets to a seahawks vs ravens game in memorial stsdium because i wanted to watch warren moon play.....it was a treat to see him....very fast release......brought back memories of going to colt games with my father....
I didn’t grow up knowing what Moon had gone through. This was good to see. I was fortunate to meet him once at a Western Auto in Houston. Such a great person. He was and still is my favorite quarterback of all time. I still remember the Oilers of old. Luv Ya Blue!
I'll never forget my Dad at Chiefs training camp, asking Warren to sign an autograph because I hadn't gotten one all day. Warren reluctantly obliged. He didn't have to. The man was all business and 14 year old me didn't know what that looked like. Huge thanks to him for doing that.
Now that Tom Brady has retired, having played till he was 44?, Warren Moon could have stats comparable to Brady's. But Warren did spend 10 years in the Canadian Football league, 10 years of QB stats could have been added. He would be above Tom Brady. And more teams than Tom Brady.
6 years in Canada. The CFL is a great league but a different game. Imagine being in Edmonton with Gretzky and Warren Moon winning all those championships in a row at the same time
@@TheHeston83 I know, among other rules, they quicken the pace, you have to make 10 yds in 2 downs, the 3rd down, unless your close enough dor a dive across for the 1st down, you'll have to punt. I wish the NFL had that deep an end zone. Its so expansive and deep, But I didn't know that Warren Moon went to Washington University, the same school that had a QB named Sonny Sixkiller. He would throw the ball so hard that he broke all his receivers fingers. That must have been the reason why the NFL didn't draft him. If it was truly 1970 the year Moon graduated college, that year Stanford produced Jim Plunkett. Same school that produced John Elway in 1983. He threw the football hard.
Canadian football fans still revere Warren Moon and Doug Flutie... two great QB’s who weren’t any NFL team’s choice but changed a lot of minds along their journeys.
Warren Moon was my favorite QB growing up and made me an Oilers fan. Watching him throw darts in the run and shoot offense was amazing. Definitely deserving of the HOF.
Warren was a perfect man to have on your team. Beautiful passer throwing the ball and leader on the field. He proved that on both sides of the border. HOF'ER in both leagues.
I grew up in H-Town & was a huge Oilers (RIP) & Moon fan. Moon was the trigger man of the run & shoot offense & both were 30 years ahead of their time. I can only imagine what type of numbers he would’ve put up in today’s pass happy/no defense NFL…🏈
All I can say is I respect this human, not because hes was an ahtlete or the first to anything but because he's a strong man who continue to move forward regardless of the pain and hurdles and everyone knows that is not easy.
Great story, I remember the early 90s Oilers as a 2nd grader in 92. Them Oilers should of faced the Cowboys in the SuperBowl that year. In regardless what a great story win or loose.
When were in the 9th grade same year that he was in the 9th grade I threw for 1,500 yards and he was the talk of Texas Coaches how he threw for 3,500 yards that year and his Coach sent his games films to every college in the nation, with his stats and his last name Moon we that he was White seeing a picture of him we were Amazed , I meet him in person in Houston 1982 at a Pennzoil Chemical youth conference, I told him, that he had accomplished More than our generation of 1956 than anybody We knew of I told him Sir I am Acres Home Proud of Him. Be Blessed Warren against All Odds .
I was definitely blessed as a kid growing up in Houston watching him play. I wanted to be like Warren Moon and throw a tight spiral like he did! Still to this day nobody has thrown a ball like him!
It was a wonderful time to be a football fan in Edmonton! Wilkinson….’the dwarf’ gave way to Moon. Tom used to get beat up pretty good, but he’d put that flack jacket on and tough it out. He was a warrior! My favorite guy on the team was George McGowan. He had unbelievable hands and was the reason I became a receiver. As luck would have it, in ‘79? The Eskimos got Brian Kelly WR out of Washington State. Together, He and Moon lit up the CFL! Go look at the stats! I would be remiss, if I didn’t mention Dan Kelley. You don’t win without defense, and He was an absolute Gem at the linebacker position
Say what you want about him but there's one thing for sure Mr.Moon was a class act not only as a player but as a person aswell and more so he paved the way for many black QBs in giridon football 🏈,HOF deserve!
Warren Moon threw the tightest spiral consistently more than any QB I've ever seen. He and Randall Cunningham paved the way for the black quarterbacks in the NFL today.
That Run n Shoot Oiler offense was one of the most entertaining offenses I've ever seen. It's a shame they never made it to the Super Bowl. They definitely had the talent. Warren was an amazing QB !
What an amazing f'ng story. The Oilers were my team since 78' when Earl arrived. I did not know Moon's back story and this was inspiring and moving. Good stuff!!!
I remember when Kevin Gilbried pulled him out of the game so that he would not set a passing record and Buddy Ryan and Gilbried almost got into a tussle over it and had to be separated Warren Moon is number #1.
I live in H-Town & remember that. I watched that game against the Chiefs when he threw for 527 yards & 3 tds & was pulled late in the 4th quarter. He was only 27 yards from the record of 554 yards STILL held by Norn Van Brocklin. Allegedly, Moon was given the option to stay in the game to try & break the record, but declined. He later said he regretted his decision. 🏈
I recall an Eagles Oilers Monday night game in the late 80s. I watched a Moon closer to the end of his career, and a Randall Cunningham closer to the start of his. It was great watching them battle it out. Cunningham had huge respect for Moon.
Damn he had a pretty pass. He seems like such a good dude. He was fun to watch. Bottom line....the dude was a badass! "We were over the Moon" Ha! Nice.
The last words of this were tone deaf. If Moon played those first 6 seasons in the NFL they would still be chasing his numbers. He still at the time of his retirement finished top 3 TD's , Yards and completions.
Growing up in Texas, when all the kids had Aikman Jerseys, Moon was my quarterback. Sad thing is when the oilers left because of the mayor and city not wanting...... Anyway, Carr was my next. Both gave their all, had excellent skills, and were used.
I have to 2nd that statement ,That Warren Moon has a Perfect Spiral..I don't think I have ever seen a Warren Moon Wobbler to be honest . Warren Moon & Mike Vick have the 2 most beautiful Deep Touches I've ever seen! That Football would come out like it had GPS tracking
Remember him from the "Quarterback Challenge" days in the summertime on NBC -- he's the reason my brother and I used to do our own course in the backyard, using whatever we could find (music stand, kiddie pool, picnic bench, etc.); we wanted to be Warren Moon. Such great memories....Thank you, Sir!
One of the all time "What Ifs"... Along with Marcus Allen. Had these men gotten the playing time they rightfully deserved, the record books might look a bit different.
@@hurrythepeace9443 raiders owner sat him on the bench, reduced his role for 4-5 years before finally trading him. All that out of spite. Marcus had never been disrespectful but somehow the owner seem resentful that Marcus had become bigger then the team. Essentially he robbed him of 5 years.
Man no one back then can slice through a defense like Moon and company could. That first half against the Bills in the comeback game was you gotta be kidding me
The fact the dude played in Canada, at his peak and then came to the NFL, with arguably his best years behind him, but he still kicked arse is unreal. If he had a better defensive set-up with Houston, man he could well have been the GOAT. Seems to be a fantastic bloke as well. Its utterly ridiculous, nay hsameful, that having a black guy at QB! was off limits. Moon, my God, what a classy passer! Just look at that sling, and that spiral. He's also got S Super Bowl ring, from Seattle as well.\ as a commentator. So, yeah thats fantastic he has one.
Man our team was blended but dominated by mostly black me besides Lambert and Hamm . Doug Williams won a Superbowl with the redskins and again the Steelers had Kordell Stewart then came McNair, Vick McNabb, Cunningham. Race is lame if you can ball you get respect but Texas is to this day top 5 racist states in USA. Warren Moon is a legend and HOF QB and he's in the history books nobody can change because he is heart and a baller
Warren Moon told the Oilers "I'll play longer than Cody". Yup. Cody Carlson was the highest paid backup quarterback by far at the time. Why?? I won't say but the Oilers got their wish. Cody Carlson was finally the starter for 1994. The Oliers went from 12-4 under Moon in 1993 to 2-14 under Carlson in 1994. Cody Carlson never played again after the 1994 season
Just watched this for the first time and I didn't realize he had to win 5 times in the CFL to be recognized. Kudos to his perseverance to stay with it and succeed 👏
