Dallas Cowboys legendary QB Troy Aikman talks with Joe Buck on his career in the NFL and now the booth, and recaps some amazing Dallas Cowboys stories.
I am one of the biggest 49er fans from the early eighties. I can't tell you how much I disliked the Dallas Cowboys and Troy because they kept stopping the Niners in the NFC championship games. I might of disliked him back then but I have always respected the heck out of that man. I respected him because of his relentless focus on winning. It does not surprise me at all that he has become successful in the broadcast booth as well. Troy is the kind of friend we all need in our lives because you know he will hold you accountable for your bullshit. So happy that he is healthy and happy in life.
3 Super Bowl titles. Responsible for 2 of the 4 Buffalo losses and a win against Pittsburg in 96. Growing up an Eagles fan, I didn't really appreciate how good Mr. Aikman was until watching old games later in life. If you live in Philadelphia, any team but Dallas was the consensus, but I give credit where credit is due. Much respect.
I worked with Troy as a Director/Producer on much of his earliest TV/advertising work. He was HORRIBLE on camera when he started. BUT he is the person you see -- he is a humble Oklahoma boy just as in awe of the opportunities he's been given as we are of what he accomplished. Very nice person.
Never saw a tougher Cowboys quarterback than Troy. The hits he took, especially in the early years and those NFC East battles, were brutal...yet he stood in there and delivered strikes every time. Today's "elite" quarterbacks wouldn't have lasted half a season. Troy is one of my favorites from back in the day.
Well you definitely didn't see Roger Staubach play. Roger faced off against really nasty defenses on a weekly basis and none of the rules to protect the quarterback. Troy played in an era where the rules had already changed and of course post 2006 its a joke anymore. Yeah,Troy was still tough as nails though.
Meredith was injured in a game where he suffered broken ribs and a punctured lung..... And kept playing!!!!! Now that’s tough While football is still a violent sport, todays game is not nearly as brutal as it was back in those days.
Troy Aikman is a class act. He's open and honest with his emotions and talking about what went on during his career. Choking up when discussing the OKC bombing and his sister makes you realize he's just a regular guy that happens to be a HOF Quarterback.
To bad most of the people he played with lack class and dignity. The 90s Cowboys were a grubby collection of steroid /drug users and abusers, criminals and women/wife abusers. Let's not forget the "White House " where players went to get high and revel in a debauched lifestyle. Less than 2 miles from Valley Ranch. Just like a sports beat writer said "If this is America's team then woe is America.
That makes sense because at 0:55, it shows Brady having 4 SB rings. It should be 7. Aikman is a class act. It's a shame he can't comment on the quality of the product now, compared to when he played the game. He got reprimanded a couple of times for some terrible "roughing the passer" and ""defenseless receiver" calls. It will be interesting to see how Brady does in the commentary booth, next year.
There is no other that does it all better than Troy as a leader, football player, father, friend, teammate and person. Some athletes are not role models but Troy IS a role model.
This is one of the most entertaining interviews, I have ever seen, heard! Joe Bucks questions are not only well timed, but probing as well! Now to confess, I'm not only a Boomer Sooner fan for several decades. BUT, a Cowboys fan for almost the same duration! I could listen to this over, and over again. What stands out most for me is Troy's midwestern values, and his work ethics! Wish more Americans had these values now!!!!!
Troy is a class act. I met him one time in '98 while working at Dillard's in Irving Mall in Dallas. His house had just burned down and he was buying some new clothes. He talked with me briefly and was very polite. Wish I could have got his autograph but it was against store policy!
Never saw this video before, and if there was ever a moment to reveal the real honest to god man that Troy Aikman has shown to be...here it is folks. A super classy guy, with a real deep sense of compassion. 🏆
Born/Raised in DFW area and although I never have encountered Troy, my mother did at a local grocery store with a GF. Tom Thumb or Minyards (can't remember) early 90s after they had won 1-2 SB.. Obviously Troy was a huge star and my mother was waiting in line behind and all I remember her telling me was that he was the nicest, polite and easy going man .. friendly. Mom said he talked to people around him and Mom told him we're proud of y'all Troy .. said he couldn't have been more of a gentleman. ✌️
Lifelong Eagle fan here. I am grateful that your mother made it through that terrible disease Troy. I know you have said that she should not have made it but God said she would as has others. I am grateful for you and your family that she is still here. On a side note in my opinion you are an excellent commentator!!
I was at the Rams game in November 1990. What was exciting was that not only did they beat a good Rams team, but you could see and feel the team getting better. I did not know then that Troy was tired of it all, but he certainly made the right choice by sticking around !
Cowboys fan here. Yes indeed Troy Aikman became the face of the great 1990s Dallas Cowboys, an iconic, lagendary player who talks like it is, tells it like it is. No nonsense, stand up type of guy. Well respected among his teammates, fans and the sports world in general.
Troy was and still is my all time favorite player. Growing up in the 90s I didn't understand all the behind the scenes stuff but I knew they could've been even greater if things were different.
As a lifelong Cowboy fan I was elated when they won the Super Bowl in 92. Troy is such a stand up guy and it shows in this interview. I love how Joe tries to make Troy laugh. I'm sure it's because he know how intense Troy is all the time. It just shows their friendship is a good one. Thanks Joe for interviewing your friend and partner in crime. Always love to listen to you guys do NFL games!
Troy is the best guy. I was in Kindergarten in 1990 and I told everyone my name was Troy. So the teacher asked my mom is his name Troy and she said no and laughed and told the teacher that I loved Troy Aikman and wanted to be like Troy lol. Great times
Troy Aikman! I've been a fan since the last year at UCLA! You and the All- Stars of the Dallas Cowboys returned that franchise to it's glory!!! Thanks for all the great memories!!
@@pasal2128Coach had to go. He’s fired thousands of players over his career. He got fired. Everyone gets fired. Ask Drew Pearson what he thinks about Coach getting fired.
Troy Aikman was my favorite player during the 90s, even my son's name is Troy because of him. He was not only a great player, but he's a tremendous person on top of it. I have learned many things about Troy and his family that I didn't know before, so my thanks to the both of you for doing this interview. I greatly enjoyed it.
Troy Aikman is amazing. Just listening to this has given me a different view and heightened level of respect for him. He is so insightful and his intellect is off the charts. Simply captivating 👊🏾🙌🏾👆🏾
I've know Troy for a few years and never knew of some of these stories. He's a class act and is good for the sport of football, broadcasting and most importantly representing the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He's great at what he does because he dedicates himself 100% to what he is doing. Thanks Troy for your friendship!
I ran across joe bucks .videos. I been a cowboys fan way before they became big winners. as troy speaks of his intensity to win. I can relate. I have so much more respect for troy and Joe. I must have watched this video 10x . is so inspiring to me .on my way to rebuilding my business and life. Joe keep them coming. you never know who or when your going to influence someone life. blessings big time Joe
Didn't search for this video...just showed up as per my RU-vid algorithms. What a great interview and was able to watch this all the way through. Great stuff...Troy and Joe have the greatest chemistry!
As a Reskins fan, we had to hate the Cowboys. This was a moving interview and agree that Troy is a class act. Jerry really f'd up by not keeping Jimmy--they could have had a destiny for years in Dallas. This interview also shows why you guys are great together in the booth. Excellent video!!!
Been a cowboy fan during the fun years of America. Now,,,Im still a dallas fan. But,,not a NFL fan any longer,,, . Sad. But,,,Love Aikman,,,hes a good man!
I am not much of a football fan but I have always greatly admired Troy Aikman. He is such a class act. I remember when some of his teammates were acting like idiots in Dallas, drawing a lot of unwanted and unnecessary negative public attention to the team (Michael Irvin, etc.) but he always remained above all that. The Cowboys were never the same again after the loss of Troy. Actually, they lost their best asset when Tom Landry left, he and Troy were very much alike, fair and square. We need more people like them again.
Aikman is the real deal and a role model at so many levels. Easily one of my favorite QBs of all time. And that’s coming from an older-timer that grew up watching the old war horses from as far back as the late 70s.
Nobody classier. Nobody at his level that is as grounded as Troy. In h.s in 1991, I did a paper on "Famous person you would like to sit down and have supper with" or something like that. My paper was on Troy Aikman. That was in 1991. My answer would be the same today in 2023. ❤
Met him walking on a plane from LAX to Dallas summer of 1990 on his way back to camp Spoke for 10-15 min about breaking his ankle at OU vs UM, Jimmy Johnson, all the Canes on the team and more - was super nice
I'm a huge pac-12 fan, pac-10 back when Troy played at UCLA. From AZ, big ASU fan during that time, but man I loved watching Troy play at UCLA. I can't stand the Cowboys, but always liked Aikman. Class act for sure.
Still boggles my mind that not only have the Cowboys not won a superbowl since 1995, not only have they not been to one, they have not even made it to the NFC championship since 1995. When you have that sort of drought, it's leadership, not the players/coaches.
I'm a lifelong Giants fan who sat in the upper deck of the Meadowlands for years cheering for Lawrence Taylor to break this guy in half. That said, hearing this interview I freaking love him. The idea that to this day he's pissed that he and Jimmy are not regarded the same as Brady and Belichick because Jimmy didn't have the drive to get there is amazing. And then to hear him apply that as a parent to say "Whatever you do, do you want to be great, or do you just want to go through the motions?" is incredible. He makes everyone around him better.
Rams, Angels, Lakers were also my teams growing up! I've liked Troy since his Oklahoma Sooners days. Sad he broke his leg and had to transfer, but thankful he bloomed at UCLA and Dallas.
Packer Fan here. Troy a true gentleman, athlete, and brilliant mind. The 90s Cowboys really solidified the mystique of the Cowboys. Its slowly dwindling as the magic fades. Back then Troy dominated the Pack.
Actually is pretty incredible to hear Troy talk about his head injuries because I always wondered if he had any long term negative effects from playing. I remember watching the times he got hurt growing up and thinking about all the players who have had CTE issues after retiring. It is good to hear that he is doing well so long after playing because I do enjoy watching Buck and him announce games. This was a really good interview!
Troy is a top 5 Quarterback, a fabulous player, a great competitor, and a classy guy ! Thanks Troy, from this Portuguese fan who's still at pains for that loss in the 94 championship..!
Troy’s story about 2-8 go to state reminds me of a team from my state when I played: 2-5 entering the last game, we were up on them 29-7 in the 4th and something clicked in them and they came back and barely lost 36-34 and snuck in the playoffs. Somehow they beat the conference champs the next week and gave the eventual champs a 41-35 double overtime battle that ended with them getting stopped on 1. A 2-6 team was 1 yard and a pat away from a state championship appearance.
what is there not to like about Try Aikman? He back stopped the Cowboys to 3 fantastic Super Bowl finishes! He Remains my favorite QB of all time. I'm bias be a Cowboys fan, but man what a ride those times were!! Class act the whole way.
I know everyone is going to think I am nuts, but my favorite Cowboys team was the 1991 Cowboys!! Something about the hunger they had to finally turn it around and go to Washington and beat the undefeated Reskins, then go to Philly and beat the Eagles late in the year. Plus, l loved Issiac Holt & Jack Del Rio!! Holt never gets mentioned. He was a pure hitter.
I really hope to see them grow old. Maybe not on television but just an occasional, here we are and we’re still alive and well. I watched segment to learn a little more about a very influential man I’ve always held in high regards. He made his sister my Hero. I hope and pray she sees nothing but sunshine the rest of her days.
I was born in 1979, so being around 10 yrs old when Aikman was drafted affected me as a person in a couple of important ways. 1. There's an entire group of Cowboys fans my age that grew up believing that once in the air, that a football just tightly spiraled in matter what. Aikman didn't have the fastest release, and there's others that had a bigger arm. His throwing form wasn't even the best from an aesthetic perspective as I personally like Vick's far better. But if you were to simply focus on the football itself while midair... Compared to absolutely everyone else, the one thrown by Aikman would be the fastest and tightest spiral of them all, every single time. 2. That same group of people also grew up believing that not only would the ball automatically spiral, but that it would go where we intended it to go. I'd never argue that Aikman was the greatest QB because he wasn't. But his John Wick like focus to his craft did result in his throws being in incredibly tight and accurate even by QB HoF standards. Go look for film of Aikman throwing ducks. The film simply doesn't really exist because everything he threw came off looking like the perfect throw. If you had to pick one person to throw a football through a tire 45yds away, and you only had one throw to make it. Your first pick throw that ball is a prime Aikman. At least if there's money on it.
This was fantastic! Reminds me why I’ve always had so much admiration and respect for Troy. As a lifelong Cowboy fan, he’s at the top of the legendary heap.
I don't know what your status is with RU-vid but the sheer amount of commercials in the video's is really affecting my enjoyment in watching them , Lighten up ! .
This was cool. Growing up a huge Cowboys fan during the 90s with my dad. The feeling I get when I see my favorite player and know their stories is awesome. Thank you.
