Behold, over 3 months of my life... This is a project I've been wanting to see through to completion for a while now, and I'm so glad to finally share it with you all!
By the way, we're doing a 24 hour charity stream on Twitch on the last weekend of this month for L'Arche to help those with developmental disabilities, so if you enjoyed this content I spent the last several months making, it really would mean the world to me to see you there!
To call the production of this video difficult would be an understatement. When you combine this project with university, adverse events in the family, trying to get myself back in shape again after Covid, balancing several games on this channel at once (though that part isn't anything new), finding the time to edit this video would certainly be tricky at times to say the least.
📖Legend(s Arceus...)

I don't think it's in the good keeping and sense of 'informed' opinion to make such a long video and then drop 'made badly' in the title AH. It just panders to the usual things I frankly find boring now: ''the trees, the Anti-aliasing, the (lack of) Voice-acting, the draw-distance'' etc. I understand your critique tries to be fair but PLAs meta-ratings (and overall reception) speaks for itself. In the spirit of ''Gameplay 1st'' regardless of 'how rich' a Company is: I'm never too fussed about visuals or the 'sub Unreal 4 engine' limitations.

1:02:50 Plus, on points such as this - this is what I don't get about general critique in the Community. For Years, even decades We ask for ''higher difficulty in Pokémon games''. So then the Forces of Nature return in all their HD glory - and actually the fight scenarios are brilliantly laid out here - yet nope! People still complaining. I mean, you have your opinions AH and yes of course there's certainly a few 'Quality of Life' improvements Gamefreak should make. But in cases like these, you're missing the point.

@@netweed09 Dunno why you responded to a list of music and footage credit but okay...? Higher difficulty should not equate to more tedious, it should equate to a meaningful and thought out challenge. For example, Noble Pokemon battles well illustrate how to craft a meaningful and unique challenge for the player to overcome. But putting the player and target in an open area with a target who flees at even the slightest trigger, and who only even appears during particular weather you need to just reset over and over for again until you get the right RNG, this is not a meaningful challenge. That's like if a title came out that made even more Pokemon act like roaming legendaries and be absolute pains to catch, and saying "you've been asking for higher difficulty, why are you complaining?!"

PLA literally does Volo’s character precisely zero favours, they do him so dirty. You can *kinda* find his reasoning for his plans if you really squint and look but a lot of them are a ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ kind of situation. Which REALLY sucks because if you look at these clues and piece it together then I’d wager that Volo is almost as complex as N as a villain. Volo’s stated goal for wanting to recreate the world is because the world is full of suffering. He wants to dethrone Arceus and create a world that has no suffering because he is hyper aware of all of the cruelty and injustice around him. Volo feels as though Arceus is an inadequate, apathetic god and he’s pissed at it. Volo also does have an obsession with trying to find answers to a lot of impossible questions, it is never explained why he has this obsession though. He is however, hinted at actually being a kind person at heart both with him being kind and gentle when he really doesn’t need to be, his photograph with Togepi and his team. His team that consists of: 3 friendship evolutions and his partner being a god damn Togekiss, him befriending Spiritomb a very misunderstood Pokémon and having an Arcanine, a Pokémon featured in one of the quests that has themes of death and bereavement, everlasting love and sacrifice. Of course Volo pretty much has a carbon copy of Cynthia’s team but still… any antagonist, like Silver for example, who was meant to be seen in a sympathetic light always have at least one friendship evolution on their team. Through this game all about making connections though one thing stands out: Volo is incredibly lonely. He never states this but he is. You don’t see him with any other characters, he doesn’t talk to anyone or even hang around his coworkers. Cogita, who appears to be very clearly related to him straight up loathes him and is really cold and abrasive when the protag only knows Volo as someone who is helpful, kind and almost charming. If you interact with other characters within PLA pretty much all of them have connections to other characters and have a history with them. Whereas when Volo disappears no one acknowledges his lack of presence, not even his boss or coworker say anything. No one notices that he’s gone apart from Cogita who immediately calls him a scoundrel and then quickly moves on from the one-sentence acknowledgment and Laventon who speaks with him for the last time when you go to confront Giratina. So its pretty obvious that Volo is a really… lonely person for someone who is so charismatic and friendly, like it seems very odd. Which leads us into the last crumb of clues game freak left us; the old verses and some and Volo’s dialogue. Volo states that he is a descendant of the ancient Sinnoh people, seemingly blessed by Arceus or at least worshipers of Arceus. And he states that he suffered in the past and also believes that his level suffering is the case for literally everyone (the implications of this is pretty dark actually). The Old Verses that you dig up state that: long ago the Celestica People were in Hisui and then all of a sudden they left for reasons the player isn’t given. They also state that people came from across the seas and appropriated the beliefs, culture and names of the Celestica people and used the name ‘Celestica’ when they had no right to. So basically colonisation. This is even reinforced when Kamado when he apologises of Mount Coronet says “for the good of pokemon and the Celestica People”. However, Old Verses state that Celesticans left long ago and the only ones we know of are Volo and Cogita, of which no one really knows who they are. So Kamado is talking about the clans who appropriated an entire race’s identity. Holy shit. Then its eluded that the clans split off and *war* broke out due to a difference of beliefs of basically the same religion. So if we assume that the ‘Ancient Sinnoh People’ are the Celestica people then that means that Volo is descended from people who were colonised and are no longer around and also grew up in times of war. If we take a look at history and how native peopke were treated in colonised countries then… fucking yikes. If these assumptions are correct, and for PLA they’re not a huge leap, then Volo’s past is incredibly tragic. Like… where is his family? what ‘heartbreak’ did he experience? I can only guess that everyone Volo loved dearly is dead and I… really feel for the guy because now he just works a retail job to get by and pursue his passions and because he was so isolated he got in wayy too deep and by the time he finds someone to connect with then well… it’s already too late. If Game Freak had bothered to do more than just leave context clues and little crumbs of information then this could have had the potential to be a VERY powerful, emotional and complex post game. To travel with Volo and learn more about him and what happened to Hisui and why everyone is so terrified of Pokemon. It could have answered just soooo many questions. You could have had the chance to make a genuine connection with him. The protag’s entire purpose in Hisui is to bring people (and pokemon) together and introduce empathy essentially yet we don’t get the option to treat a clearly very wounded man with any empathy at all despite him as being established as one of your friends who sticks his neck out for you. I just- PLA leaves *hints* of story. They elude to stuff and this isn’t good enough. Like… they HAVE to tell us this stuff. Because if they don’t then all tehy are doing is opening a character up to being simplified, watered down and completely misread. All they are doing is creating a collection of writing prompts and forcing the fandom to draw their own conclusions which like… no! That’s just such lazy storytelling and wasted potential. Characters like Volo and Cogita are really, really interesting and its such a huge shame that game freak just didn’t go into depth with them.
@williamherring1201
@williamherring1201 Год назад
His loneliness is what stuck with me as well, even down to his final lines where states that he was alone in contrast to us. The fact that he can’t see the friends that he must have made in his friendship evolutions really rings to his obsession with that. Even to subtle details of how he describes the ginko guild as separate. Having him be so obsessed with the history of the celestica people gives him that connection to others, either having found this connection for being alone before or otherwise, reinforcing him as an endling to the celestica in his mind makes for much more of a tragic character. We have further information to suggest that the celestica moved away from Arceus - perhaps he both blames Arceus for being alone and sees their forsaking as justification for the world ending. And then we have his choice to battle us, as opposed to asking to study all of the plates whilst he has our trust. Letting us prove the the world does not need to end, in place of simply completing his own goals, gives the shape of a far more nuanced and interesting character - which is never explored. As a final point, one of the old verses mentions that the name of the celestica lives on - but not the heart. Perhaps herein lies cogita’s frustration for volo adopting the name; or for volo letting us prove that the world can regain that heart. There is very much the impression of a deep and brilliant character, but this is beyond subtlety - we are absolutely starved of the exploration he deserves. (But then again, with Pokemon character writing in mind, maybe it’s best left to imagination and interpretation).

While I agree with the majority of these critiques, some have justification for why they are the way they are. I noticed 8 points like this that I'll mention below. 1) Why the player is chosen instead of the clans or town guard? Because the clans don't use pokeballs, so they aren't skilled at capturing. As for the guard, he can catch some of the weak ones that tend to find their way into the village, but he's not skilled enough to handle the more dangerous pokemon out in the field. He can train the ones he does catch just fine, but that's not the same as being able to catch stronger ones in the heat of battle. 2) How did the good Galaxy team become evil team Galactic? The Galaxy team would have been disbanded at some point, due to not being needed. The name would live on as a general symbol of progress, so Cyrus used the symbol to represent his twisted version of progress by rebuilding a new world after destroying the old. 3) Fast travel between the 5 areas isn't quite the same as travel between cities in past games. Each area in Arceus is closer to an entire region from old games, so you're closer to asking why can't you fast travel between Kanto and Johto. But even in GSC, you had to cross over to the other region first before being able to swap maps. 4) Wisps show up better at night, which is why you can see them from much farther away at night. This makes sense, since they are a light source as well as being a spirit (thematic to night). 5) The satchel issue seems more like an issue you caused for yourself. The average player will interact when an NPC calls out to them, even if they already have an idea of what will be said. The only reason you didn't was because you were frustrated at how long the tutorial was going (which is a legitimate flaw). If he had called out to you earlier on in the tutorial, before you could get sick of it, you probably would't have skipped him. But you being too annoyed to respond to him doesn't mean they didn't convey it properly. 6) Why can't you run during boss fights? To be honest, I didn't even know there was a running feature until this video. But it would take away from the whole "dodge to avoid damage" setup. It also works thematically, since you are standing up to a frenzied creature instead of running, so you only dodge attacks and square up to face it again. 7) Why don't Adaman/Irida have ball throwing animations? I believe you already answered that yourself by saying they don't use pokeballs. Though the pokemon being gone until the battle is a valid critique with that in mind. Especially when Mai always has Munchlax with her. 8) Clefairy's eyes have always been like that. The official art shows half circles on the outside of its eyes (like Krillin in DBZ). It was never a fully closed circle around them, but that's what it's conveying.

While it was possible for botw to have better traversal and other conveniences that Arceus has, it was just not possible for botw to have better collectables. Korok seeds and spirit orbs are garbage. They might as well be stars from super Mario 64 as they offer 3 upgrades total, but what could they have done? It is quite hilarious as you say because as Legends Arceus stands completely gutted of content compared to USUM and even sword and shield, it still ends up being an objectively better open world adventure game just by a default of being a Pokémon game. You got some of these wrong: - Volo does imply heavily on the reason as of why he tried to do what he did tho. Specially regarding his lineage. - The lucky sisers were not trying to help, they just wanted to but were too prideful to actually do it. - You don't need to fight 15 magnemites within distortions to complete the pokedex entry as there are some trainers with magnemites on the world. Actually, there's no point of doing any tasks after getting max research, tasks are just suggested ways to get to 10 anyway. (Also, I'm pretty sure the pokedex red arrows are explained somewhere in the game, because I knew what it meant and I didn't figure it out nor searched for it online) - You can check how many wisps are left in each area talking to the kid that gave you the quest. Also, wisp render distance is related to the time of the day, as most of them become more visible during the night, information also given by the kid who gives you the quest. - Wing balls are not designed for range (tho it can be used that way and I do agree it would benefit the game if it worked that way), it was design for air catch. - There is a button to change targets. Most often than not it will not change on it's own unless you use it, which may be bad in some cases but good in others as you can rely it will keep locking on the one you manually selected unlike in some other games. - Many of the things that happens in the footage you show on the background are bugs that were already patched out. When I played I faced none of these issues. (There is still room for argument that they shouldn't be there in the first place tho, as always) Many nitpicks aside, some valid criticism was made here. I wouldn't go as far as to call it an "alpha build" (as funny as it is in the context of this game), but it really feels like it was an experiment that they didn't want to put too much resources into it for the case it flopped. Now that they saw it works, I'm expecting that the next game in the sub-series to be taken more serious by TPC as a whole and end up being of higher quality in general.

Around the halfway point in the video, you mentioned how BOTW’s “lack” of overworld music kind-of felt odd for you; while I see where you’re coming from and somewhat agree, I think BOTW’s primary overworld OST being ambient piano solos and of the likes actually enhanced the game. It personally gave me a sense of peace and the overworld music felt like it was a part of the environment. I do definitely understand where the design choice for BoTW's soundtrack came from though, and have seen a few videos out there from those way way more knowledgeable about music than I, so I feel like I respect what it was going for, but feel like it's not really for me. @@LittleSprout73 I mean it's ambient and has it's strengths. The shadow popping in and out at 1:54:15 is not a render distance issue, it is a problem with frustum culling. Simply put, the game ceases to compute the tree when it goes off-screen to free up that memory and processing power, which is normal, but in this case the shadow disappears when the tree does. The game should know that the shadow is on screen, and therefore the tree, or at least the projected shadow, need to remain in place, but it was not programmed that way. Likely, the lighting system is designed to generate simple silhouettes from the active models. No model, nothing to process, no shadow. I'm not trying to defend the tender distance in this game, it is also terrible. The incompetence in modern Pokemon games is astounding.

Regarding Ingo, I sawba theory that stated that Ingo was brought back in time to help popularize/normalize Pokemon battles, which is what he claims he wants to do once he manages the training grounds in Jubilife. It makes sense to use someone like him since he's basically a Frontier Brain, who are considered on the level of Elite Four or even Champions in modern day Pokemon, and they are able to battle under many niche situations, which is fitting for the new battle style introduced in this game. So basically this theory makes Ingo to be the founding father of Pokemon battling, at least as a norm than more of an exception in Hisui. A darker and more boring theory is that Ingo was the original isekai but his trip back into the past was botched, resulting in his lost memories and stuff, so the player character was essentially his replacement. It also sorta ties well since Arceus wanted an experienced modern battler to face Volo, whose skills with controlling Pokemon would be considered too dangerous in the past but more manageable for someone like Ingo(and the player character ofc).

I'll go on record as saying that I was one of the disillusioned fans whom this game brought back. I didn't buy Let's Go or BDSP, but I did buy Legends Arceus, and it gave me hope for the franchise again (even though, yes, the unfinished quality was very distracting). I have another friend who didn't buy any Switch Pokemon games except Legends Arceus, and he said he'll probably stick to the Legends series from now on.

Bdsp was a cash grab made in a year to make a quick buck out of its impressionable fan base. Sword and shield was bad. And let’s go is severely underrated but not that good either. “Hope for the franchise again” What is this delusion with Pokemon fans to say this shit for each single games. If some unfinished tech demo gives you hope then you're just naive. You get shit on a gold platter and say this gives you hope because it wasn't on a silver platter. The concept is great but the execution was shoddy and rushed. And your contribution just gives them more incentive to make more rushed games.

@@Wyllowisp the fact that legends arceus was an unfinished game is exactly why I don’t have much faith for generation 9 or whatever comes next. I kind of already lost faith in there ability to make proper remakes, the last good remake was omega ruby and alpha sapphire. We have consistently gotten back to back bad mediocre remakes like let’s go and bdsp. I think gamefreak is a lot better at remaking older games then they are at making a new generation of game with new concepts. Whatever remake we have next in line I don’t have much faith after bdsp. Let’s go was sort of made with the intention of bringing Pokémon go players into the mainline series so I can give let’s go the benefit of the doubt of why the remake was mediocre but there was no excuse for bdsp being as bad as it was, the fact that they sacrificed the quality of bdsp to create an unfinished tech demo like legends arceus is really what made me dislike this company even more. They are taking very small baby steps every new generation. Pokémon games will never be good unless we give them an incentive to be good and the only way to achieve this is by voting with our dollars and not buying any of the latest garbage they give us. If you want to buy the games and not support the developers then just buy a used copy of there games from a retailer or buy them a third party seller in Amazon or eBay but for the love of god do not support the garbage they are releasing or the developers/company.

As for why Volo wanted to destroy the universe, I’m wondering if that wasn’t his initial intention. Maybe he just really wanted to meet Arceus, to the point he’d summon Giratina to do it, and Giratina’s influence twisted him over time. Given that Volo is the one who opened the Space Time rift, and it was apparently open long before the player showed up, there would definitely be enough time for it to be believable that he’d go crazy. A move's accuracy rating is (and always has been, since the beginning of the series) only 1/4 of the formula for whether a move hits or not. It also depends on the user's accuracy stat, the target's evasiveness stat, and modifiers (such as weather conditions). A move's accuracy stat being 100 doesn't mean it will never miss, that's why moves that actually can't miss like Swift are always explicitly labelled as such

Here’s a way I thought the Miss Fortune sisters could’ve been used better, or at least conveyed their desire to help more. After the player is banished but before they meet Volo, they run into the trio. Coin and Clover are quick to pick a fight, but Charm notices the forlorn expression on your face. She (probably passive aggressively) asks what’s wrong and you tell them that you were banished. Charm, who was once a member of the Galaxy Team, empathizes with your feelings and offers to help or shelter you (though still in a stand off manner). You then have a cutscene with the four of you around a campfire and they each hint at or briefly explain why they left their respective settlements; mainly that they didn’t agree with them in many ways, to the point that they no longer wanted to even associate with their groups, and ultimately found a family in each other (I don’t know if they’re actually related. Given their appearances and that they’re from different clans I don’t think they’re blood related). You all spend the night together and say your goodbyes in the morning, needing to find a way to solve the whole red sky problem. Charm gives you the advice to find your own family like she did, and that doesn’t have to be the one you’ve stuck with this whole time. You leave and then we have the scene with the Shinx and Volo. Also, later I think they should be the ones to find the ore for you; they roam all over the region, it isn’t a stretch that they’d recognize what you’re looking for. They claim they’re only doing it for themselves, but maybe it can be hinted that they’re also doing it for you, since they formed a small kinship with you. AND, the advice Charm gives could be even more impactful if, like in PMD Gates to Infinity, the player staying in Hisui was their decision. They decide that, even if they have “real family” back in modern day, they’ve found a new family here in Hisui. Or maybe the hurt their new family caused them was something they couldn’t forgive and now want to start over again and find new/old family in the life they once knew. There was SO MUCH more potential that these three had and could’ve done to influence the story and the player, it really is a shame they didn’t do much in the grand scheme of things

I'm annoyed by how weak Charm, Clover and Coin are. Coin and Clover only use 1 Pokemon each, and Toxicroak and Abomasnow both have a 4× weakness, and Charm never evolves her Rhydon no matter how many times you battle her. They kind of remind me of Courtney. She's easily my favourite Pokemon character thanks to Omega Ruby and Pokemon Generations but only has a single Camerupt to throw at you. Even in its Mega form, any Water type worth its salt can obliterate it. She's a brilliant character in concept but so easy to beat that it lessens the impact she could have had, which might be why so few people bother to discuss Courtney. They should have actually built up these characters' teams throughout the course of the games instead of just having them use 1, or in Charm's case 2, Pokemon in every battle.

Honestly, I faded away from main series pokemon after Emerald. The games are okay but they have two main problems for me. They are too formulaic. But also, from a technical perspective, they have not really kept up with technology. They were technically impressive in terms of content and gameplay hours on the GB/GBC. They were pretty average for all the competition with JRPGs and SRPGs and good sprite work on the GBA. As time has gone on, the gap between where the hardware is and what they produce as games is just more and more disappointing. Like to a person picking up a modern pokemon having not played one, the weird digital screeching of early gen pokemon is just weird. That was a creative solution to an old limitation that doesn't need to be anymore. Just record modern monster noises for them. I'd want that even before voice acting for the people. Visually Sw/Sh and arceus are bad looking by switch standards. The games don't feel like the flagship product of the biggest franchise on earth. They feel budget. The attack animations in sw/sh are so lazy. This isn't being packed into the limited storage of a GB cart anymore. You can do better. Arceus animations are better actually, but probably only because they have removed so many moves and pokemon that they can focus on the few that exist more. But arceus environments are so ugly. They look like they were player made with a basic in-game map maker tool. Its so blandly mass textured with items so bluntly dropped in little corners and unnatural plateaus in a very robotic way. Games on switch like Botw look better technically, and creatively while also having the handicap of being actual large contiguous landmasses. This game loads in delineated areas and still can't even reach a baseline of years old games technically or artistically. Mechanically, I like the concept of the real time overworld and starting turn based instances of combat. I like the attempt to change things up with the "style" combat. But the changes to speed and multiple turns seem a bit wonky. Having no multiplayer battles almost seems like a blessing with how unbalanced it has the potential to be. Otherwise in terms of gameplay, I found the game refreshing. I liked it was like a more open ended progression. You just "research" which involves interacting with pokemon in a couple of ways. I like the de-emphasized trainer battles. I don't need another game where I walk down every road and every one tries to fight me, fight 8 gym leaders in 8 cities, fight the elite 4. The game is more about catching them all than it has ever been. I loved red/blue, but the real tagline for the franchise in terms of the content of the game is "fight them all for your profit". This game is closer to what professor oak talked about. Understanding pokemon more rather than optionally just catching one to check it off a list and then giving up when you can't get all 3 of the eevees because no one wants to permanently trade them. The story was fine. I don't think Its ever been a strong point of pokemon. I don't think it was particularly bad by series standards. Music was great, I think its the best single aspect of the game. Some real catchy tracks. Overall, I enjoyed it, because novelty goes a long way for me in this franchise. I like pokemon, I just didn't want to keep playing the same basic structure with a few gimmicks added and the names changed. But the technical issues I have with the series still remain. I think I responded to how it was more designed as a single player game. Its not a dual release, they added in some pretty smart items like the link cable evo item. Its a limited dex, it all added up to make for me, a better paced game to catch everything in. I think that lack of multiplayer or connectivity is way less core to my enjoyment or "magic" of pokemon for me than it is for you and it more easily allowed me to just enjoy this game.

It allows player creativity to shine, and so that not every Mon has the same stats as the same Mon. If every stat could be maxed, there would be no decision making, no risk, every Pokémon would be fast, strong, and bulky. No reason to make any decisions. The current IV/EV system definitely could use some help, but it’s core is absolutely necessary for competitives growth and playability.

48:33 my Garchomp has missed dragon claw, a 100% accurate move, with no accuracy changing effects active. 1:06:22 my biggest nitpick (a phrase which makes no sense) is ursaluna being in the scroll menu 1:01:06 My wisps were bugged and I couldn’t even get spiritomb. I spent three hours getting the rest of the wisps, and I ended with the mirelands. However, at the end I was missing one. I had 106, but I needed 107 to talk to Vanessa and get the last one. I talked to her, and she said that I was missing one in the mirelands. 2 and a half hours and 6 online guides later, I gave up because no matter how many times I checked every spot, nothing was going to change. I ended up having to look up someone’s stream on RU-vid of giving away shinies (because the game doesn’t have random link trading) and I only managed to get a spiritomb by trading my shiny infernape. I am still salty about this. (Not sure of the timestamp): I spent 45 minutes chucking stuff at enamorous using various tactics until I finally got into a battle. 1:10:37 I actually figured out that the order stuff is in your inventory is the order it appears in your hotbar. I put my smoke bombs next to my wing balls and jet balls and my sticky globs next to my heavy balls and gigaton balls, so the system actually feels really smooth. However, I wish there was any indication that the inventory and hotbar orders are the same, because I figured it out after getting the shiny charm. 1:22:29 there’s actually a “bonk range” where if you throw a poké ball from too far, it bonks and does nothing. I actually like this because there’s a risk/reward factor to trying to catch an aggressive Pokémon without battling it. The range for a feather ball and the upgrades for it is actually slightly larger than the range aggressive Pokémon will become angry, so if you’re willing to waste some poké balls you can get the distance just right and keep chucking balls until it works. 1:25:20 fun fact: all the trees in this game are actually 4 times as large as they appear, the main character just isn’t big brain enough to see 1:54:03 That’s actually intended, it’s a backstep that Pokémon sometimes do idly. They often do it when you lock on or are facing that specific Pokémon, making it a little harder to catch them. 2:15:13 the late night theme reminds me of a couple subnautica themes, and it always reminds me of the calm parts of subnautica. 2:15:16 you should have lol 2:45:50 I think that the amount of options was similar to sword and shield, the only major differences being that there aren’t gloves or packs to customize. The conflict between the two clans and the lack of cooperation between humans and pokemon both felt meaningless because they weren’t explored well. And Volo was cool but they didn’t do a good job explaining his motives. Admittedly it’s been a while since I played through the story so maybe I’m just forgetting/misremembering things. Also in case you missed someone else's comment about the wisps, you can check how many you've gotten, it's just this obscure girl npc that looks like any other in the hub area one other thing with wisps, for whatever reason, the rendering for wisps is so much easier at night as it is explained by this random npc girl I believe and at 1:02:10 you show it is daytime so it makes sense why the render isn't that good as it's supposed to be seen at night compared to 1:01:31 where it is night time, however I do agree that there should have been indicators of where wisps you already collected were.

The Secret of NIHM, the Harry Potter series, Undertale (on the border of kid/teen), almost everything Studio Ghibli does, almost everything Pixar does, Avatar: The Last Airbender (the TV show; Shamalammadingdong's movie is hot garbage) Zelda: Majora's Mask, ... There's a massive list and giving a kids' game's story a pass is just excusing mediocrity or it's makers just not caring enough.

@lognacho
@lognacho Год назад
@@joeyjose727 it is faster, but because there are not more EV's or IV's it also limits your options greatly. There is absolutely no reason not to max out your pokemon with effort points into every stat because there is no limit to how much you can use, as opposed to how you can only give 512 EV's with a max of 252 EV's per stat in mainline pokemon games. It forces you to diversify and strategize, and that is what really gives pokemon a competitive edge. The competitive scene in Gen 8 Sw/Sh has been one of the most active and diverse of any gen, and it is partly because obtaining competitive viable pokemon is easier than ever. You can change natures with Nature mints, manipulate IV's with bottle caps, max out EV's instantly with vitamins and raise to level 100 with incredible ease thanks to exp. candies. Gen 8 has made it possible to make every pokemon you want instantly viable in a matter of minutes if you have the resources, which are all incredibly common and can be gathered in just a few hours of playtime. Competitive Pokemon needs variety, and Legend Arceus can get away with limiting options because there is no PvP. If there was, a lot of builds would be either unviable competitively or busted and actively making the metagame stagnant. It is not a surprise that Legends Arceus doesn't give the option to battle online, knowing how the combat system could only work well against AI enemies.

@XxTaiMTxX
@XxTaiMTxX Год назад
@@lognacho "Competitive Pokemon needs variety". I agree. Let's remove EV's and IV's as they're pointless and worthless since most fights can be won by using a Super Effective move (the largest amount of dealt damage in these games, and can cause monst of even 20 levels under what they're fighting to get OHKO's on them). I mean, stats are "utterly worthless" in Pokemon games in the face of "Super Effective" moves, most of the time. Provided we're not using "Legendaries" or have stats so jacked up because the mon being used is considered "broken" by the community. We should also increase the movepool from 4 to 6. 4 only existed because of space limitations on the cartridges back in the early days. There's no reason to leave it at 4. Increasing this move pool will drastically REDUCE how niche every member of your team has to be. Want to have two or three strategies for a team to engage in to win, depending on what you're fighting? You can't have that. You're limited to 4 attacks on every mon and any loss of a single mon adversely affects the strategy being employed because of how limiting this pool is. I'd also suggest "stat normalization". This way it's all about the STRATEGY used rather than "the way you raised your Pokemon". It would also reduce "gimmick" games. While gimmick games are pretty funny when they work, and are interesting... they're not that viable. The lack of "strategy" involved in Pokemon, currently, is also what leads to the current "meta" of the games. Which, is usually, "get the biggest stat sticks possible with the most destructive hits you can". I mean... Dragon Warrior Monsters 1 and 2 back on original Gameboy and Gameboy Color have far more depth in terms of combat and PvP than Pokemon has ever had. Which... is sad. Competitive Pokemon needs to do a few things. 1. Reduce "barrier to entry" for newcomers. That is to say, a team the player beats the Elite Four with on a casual run should be viable for PvP. Most players just want to use the team they've come to rely on and love over the course of the game and have a fun fight against similar minded players. Competitive Pokemon does NOT allow for this in any way, and the community is so Toxic about it, that most never come into the scene. 2. Reduce RNG. This is half the issue of things like "The Battle Tower" and Competitive Fights. If you can lose because RNG doesn't roll in your favor, it's not a "competitive" system. 3. Buffs/Debuffs need to be more useful. We'd be served a lot better if there was not a system of "stack up to 5" for buffs/debuffs. Change the buffs into straight affairs. There's a "standard" one, and a "boosted" one for each. Let's say the standard is an increase of 25%, and the boosted is an increase of 50%. Done deal. We can do the same for accuracy and evasion. Having to spend several turns "buffing" and "debuffing" in competitive play is not really viable. Most fights between two mons end in two or so moves. Most often than not... in a single move. 4. Fights need to last a bit longer. Pokemon of similar level being able to "one shot" each other isn't really good competitively. It would be far more interesting if this happened less often. That way, being able to do so, would be remarkable. Super Effective damage should probably be "toned down" some. Or, maybe the damage formulas need to be reworked. Something needs to happen here. Fights that last longer mean more strategies can be at play, and there are more possibilities for "pendulum swings". That is to say, an opponent that was losing can come back and win. 5. Removal of any "move" that just isn't that "viable". It's fine that we've got some of these "low level" moves for the main game, but they should have "upgraded" versions of them for "competitive play". You already somewhat see this with "Absorb". You get "Aborb", "Mega Drain", "Giga Drain". More moves need to follow some sort of "upgrade line". If they aren't competitive, there should be a line to "make them competitive", or they should be removed from the game. The move list is seriously over bloated with the amount of attacks in it that just "do the same thing, but with a different amount of power". Some of these should be "direct upgrade paths". For example: If a Pokemon can learn "Absorb", then it should be able to naturally learn "Giga Drain" later. 6. Increase the Movepool from 4 to 6. This immediately invites more strategy to combat and can make many more mons viable than currently are. It invites the usage of several strategies as well, rather than forcing a player to adhere to one or two. They would be able to "innovate on the fly" much better. 7. PP shouldn't exist in competitive play. If you have to restrict usage of a "high level skill" by the amount of times you can use it... you've got a bad system on your hands. Probably means you need to rework how many of each skill you've got kicking around. Every player should naturally want "the strongest moves they can use" on their team. If the move isn't "the strongest they can use", then it needs to serve some other function in combat. There isn't a point to restricting usage of those skills unless you're going to introduce more skills that reduce that usage (like Spite, which was a fantastic move, but it's the only one of its kind). If "bleeding your opponent dry" of moves is meant to be a viable strategy, then they need to create more moves to do that. If it's not, then let's remove the PP limit on attacks during PvP. 8. We need a "ranking system" in here somewhere. A way to pit new players against new players and experts against experts. A way to "climb the ladder" if you like, or a way to "stay casual" if you like. Most players first experience in PvP is getting curb stomped by a basement dweller and then never touching the PvP again. The main game or the "Battle Tower" stuff never prepares any player for this, nor gets them "ready" for it. There needs to be a "progression system" in place. One in which newbies can "learn the ropes" and "gradually get better". --- That's my short list of things Competitive needs to do. As of right now... it's not very "competitive" at all. It's one of the least balanced systems I've ever seen for "competitive play". It's horrendous.

I'm glad somebody else pointed out the lack of voice acting. It's something the Pokemon Community as a whole hasn't really cared about, because the games have never had voice acting. But the games also weren't full price $60 releases until the Switch either. If they're going to charge the same price as games like Elden Ring and FF7 Remake, I feel like they need that same level of polish and AAA features. Also, I think the way Nintendo treats their fan creators is an excellent point. Companies like Sega and Square Enix actually hire people that make really popular fan games/mods/romhacks into their development staff, while Nintendo just takes the romhack down and sues the creators. It's not hard to see why the franchise is stagnating when they don't bring in new, passionate individuals that are clearly talented.

Regarding Bagin, honestly you should probably just take the "L" instead of trying to blame bad game design. Yes, it's the responsibility of game designers to effectively communicate their mechanics and minimize player mistakes like this as much as possible, but it's absolutely impossible to account for every possible mistake a player can make. Even Super Mario Bros world 1-1 confuses some people. In this case they were VERY clear that you should talk to the guy, to the point of stopping what you're doing, and complaining that a pretty clear statement like "do you keep running out of space in your bag," to designate a solution to the problem of running out of space in your bag, isn't clear enough sounds to me like ex post facto rationalization to preserve your dignity. I can understand your criticism that there are too many tutorials in the beginning, but overall I don't think that's as much of an issue as it has been in every Pokemon game since X and Y, since these are legitimately new systems that they're trying to introduce, and they actually need tutorials. If anything, it seems like you're asking for MORE tutorials; you want a Bagin tutorial, after all. To me, it seems like in an RPG, a genre in which exploring and talking to everybody you meet has been firmly established as an important mechanic since the days of Dragon Quest 1 and Ultima, it's not too much to assume you should talk to a guy that the game takes the time out to stop what you're doing and say "talking to this guy is important." Honestly, insofar as a problem even exists, I think this is a streamer-specific problem. This is a mistake that can only be made if you're trying to rush through content to make it entertaining for an audience. Personally, I don't think games should be designed with the intent of being entertaining to an audience other than the player as a primary focus. Don't take the wrong message from this comment, overall you make some excellent points in the video, but I'm a nitpicky sort of guy, and this was one nit that I felt deserved picking.

100% agree. Most other things I could at the very least understand how it COULD be an issue (motion controls for example i thought were blatant but I guess it's easy enough to miss so fair enough calling that out). Bagin though was 100% not the game's fault. The excuse of "I thought he meant pokemon storage" falls flat when just reading the text he specifically talks about your satchel, on top of his name literally being BAG-in. Only other issue I had was he seemed to linger on certain issues and repeat complaints a lot. Listening to the complaints about fast travel went way longer than it should have with him mentioning the problem like 2 or 3 times about how dated it is (a fair complaint mind you, but presented awfully IMO). Other than that it was either good points or simple "agree to disagree" things that are staples of video essays like these.

48:35 About missing a lot of the time: pretty sure you are battling in Mist, which decreases accuracy. The bad part of it is that, I believe, it's not stated ANYWHERE that the environment can change stuff like that, but otherwise I thought it was a neat detail. Like, if you are in the middle of a field covered in mist, it makes sense that you wouldn't be able to see and as such no one should really tell you beforehand. ... THEN I remember that this is also a Pokemon game and it wouldn't hurt to be told this anyway because its a videogame, but oh well... 51:40 As a completionist, I actually like all the research tasks. Sure they can seem a little tedious, but the amount of satisfaction you get once you finish all of them is... Well, feels pretty awesome. Perhaps its something that only completionists get to feel but sometimes the satisfaction comes from all the sense of achievement you get by grinding all of that, so eh~. There are also completionists who just go "I like number to go high" and... Yeah, that's all. So hey, perhaps it isn't as bad for us as it would be for you who are not interested in that, which just points out that, in my opinion, it caters to more interests beyond the casual or the completionist player out there. It also helps too when you realize that "caught" can be used synonymously as "evolved" in some cases. For example, I never struggled with Golbat because I just made sure to evolve all my Zubats at Night and voilá. Got both the generic caught and the caught at night. True, the game doesn't tell you this, but it's honestly not a big deal (at least for me). I don't know, in general I disagree with your point about us completionists because it doesn't feel as a punishment, at least for me, and in fact feels more interesting and rewarding (to myself, at least) to see all that time, and all of that just to have a sparkly pokeball. Is it a lot of time? Yes. Are you obligated to do it? No. Will I still do it because it is something I enjoy and helps me de-stress because I know I can do mindless chores with a sense of accomplishment once I finish them? Hell Yeah. So, again, maybe it's something that only completionists understand and that you as a more casual person don't see? Could be! Could be not. 1:00:00 RE:Cranidos. OOOOOR you could've just stun and backstrike them continuously? ._. Honestly, you just made the game harder for yourself on this one, dude. Sorry. THO' I do get where you are coming from, what with you using non-STAB moves and all that... But still, if there are multiple ways to catch a Pokemon... Why didn't you try to do the stun/catch thing? Another thing is that, if you pay attention to how the distortions work, you would've realized that there are only 3 unique Distortion-mons in each one. So you get in, spawn those 3 (who btw are ALWAYS in the same spots), and if they are not what you want, go outside, rest (change the time at camp) and go and do the other tasks you most likely need to do in that area. Just want to say, I'm not saying this as if "Oh god this was SO obvious, you noob!" or anything, but rather a peek into what my brain as a completionist does and notices in order to not feel as if the game is dragging on. However, this time around it might be ME the one who doesn't understand your more casual playstyle tho', because I never found it tedious at all to wait for a distortion because I always had stuff to do. However, for you who have a goal to achieve, I can see why it WOULD be tedious. The Spiritomb thing has been explained by others in here, but in short: there IS a way to check the amount of wisps. They are meant to be searched at NIGHT and you were told that by the same person who gave you the quest. 1:03:05 There IS a way to change the weather without resetting the area. Just rest and change literally to any other time. You got in at night? Go to sleep and change it to morning. Not the weather you need? Change it to midday. So forth and so on. 1:12:00 OR you could've choose favorite on a berry and a pokeball and reorganize your items and they will be beside each other. Unfortunately, again, the game doesn't tell you this tho'.
@heirofaniu
@heirofaniu Год назад
A lot of those things the game doesn't tell you are things the game shouldn't _need_ to tell you. Weather affects battles? That's been a thing for literally twenty years, it was introduced in 2002 when Ruby and Sapphire came out and hasn't gone away since. If you've played a Pokemon game before you've more than likely needed to learn this. Evolving counts as catching? The first time you evolve a Pokemon and check the Pokedex for the evolved form you can see that the "number caught" counter goes up by one, doesn't take a genius to realize what that means. Hell, just being able to use your brain and think to yourself "What is the most efficient way to do this? Can I get multiple goals done at once?" Is common sense, literal children can do that thought process. And that's not even mentioning the fact that once you acquire a single example of the Pokemon in question and then get the research level up to 10 you can be totally done with that Pokemon and never interact with them again. You don't need to do every single task for every single Pokemon for the game to count 100% completion. This guy's criticisms really hinge on three things, those being that he's not very good at the game (if you have eighty hours in the game and you're still fucking up basic controller inputs that's on you), he doesn't pay attention to things that are told to him (doesn't talk to NPCs and skips through dialogue that tells him things he then bitches about not knowing), and he doesn't seem to understand Pokemon (he doesn't use STAB and sends in quad weak Pokemon against alphas).

In this game if you turn off the music, like I usually do for all games, in all cut scenes with the flute playing (even getting new ride pokemon) there is no flute playing, but running around the flute noise is played when summoning a ride pokemon. This means the flute is stored as a sound effect and music file, this makes cut scenes a lot more quite with no flute noise. Most NPCs in Jubilife Village have a neat aspect to them as to not trap players. If you run into them long enough (1-10 seconds) you'll pass right through them and they become ethereal until they are reloaded. The biggest bug I experienced durring this game was in Turnback Cave. Every time I would enter it the cave would be so extremely dark I couldn't even find the torches, until I undocked my switch and the cave lighting would just start working fine in handheld mode. It was so broken in docked mode and unplayable I had to walk across the room pick up the switch and play in handheld mode inorder to catch the alpha golbat and unknown in there. If it's... _GOOD ENOUGH_ , that's all they care about. Think about it like this: I didn't buy Sword and Shield but I LOVE Twilight Wings. It breathed so much life into the world and it's core characters (including the main character: _Corviknight Taxi Driver_ lol) Like, I LOVE how characters like Bea, Nessa, and ESPECIALLY Oleana were portrayed. Their personalities, their lives, etc. (Like watch their respective episodes) And... I could appreciate all of that character growth and lovely animations and visuals... _without playing Pokemon Sword & Shield_ because I could feel the care, the passion, etc. Going into them and they don't feel like super rushed products that HAVE to leave the door soon or else. While I might not agree with EVERY criticism in this video, I appreciate that there IS some criticism that isn't just about the damn graphics lol. I feel like the biggest problem with this franchise... _It's TOO big for its own good_ and everyone loves Pokemon for different things and different reasons so it's almost impossible to create something that will please the majority of fans... I know it doesn't mean they shouldn't try but you get the idea.
