“We don’t stop hiking because we grow old - We grow old because we stop hiking" - so said Finis Mitchell. And as if in complete agreement, the 70 year old Garry Weare, renowned explorer and authority on the Indian Himalaya, continues to explore the remote corners of the region. In 2003 Weare had embarked on a five-month trek from the source of the Ganges to Kashmir. The ensuing adventure formed the basis of his acclaimed travel narrative ‘A Long Walk in the Himalaya’. In this webinar Weare recounts this fascinating journey, focussing mainly on his experiences while trekking through the Buddhist villages and high passes of Ladakh, and provides a comparative study of the Ladakh region between then and now.
Australian author, photographer and adventurer Garry Weare has been leading and organising treks in the Indian Himalaya for almost 5 decades now, covering an astounding 25,000 kms in the region over the years. His vast experience of trekking in the area is the basis for his definitive guide 'Trekking in the Indian Himalaya', published by the Lonely Planet and regularly updated by him since 1986. He is former Director and now Consultant to the adventure travel company World Expeditions, founding Director to Australian Himalayan Foundation, a life member and the Australian Secretary to the Himalayan Club, a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, and a noted mountain photographer.
