The elusive and spectacularly plumed Western Tragopan (or Jujurana, translating as the “King of Birds”) is one of the most vulnerable pheasants in the world - just 3,300 survive in the wild in the western Himalaya, resulting in its being the most protected bird species in the state of Himachal Pradesh. National Geographic grantee Munmun Dhalaria created a short film that features her sighting of the shy bird, and also highlights the bird’s courtship display in captivity and the state’s overall conservation effort to protect the king of birds. This film "The Jujurana's Kingdom" was adjudged as the Best Film: Mountain Wildlife at the 4th IMF Mountain Film Festival, in 2020.
Munmun Dhalaria is an independent documentary filmmaker and National Geographic Storytelling Explorer, interested in wildlife conservation, gender, human rights and livelihood. Through her films she highlights the complexity of human-wildlife interactions in a country with over a billion people fighting for daily sustenance that also must coexist with megafauna, while revealing unseen places and untold stories of people's perseverance to protect our natural world.
Don't forget to watch the film review at the end of the film by Munmun Dhalaria, as a Q & A session with Maninder Kohli, Festival Director - IMF MFF.
