GAME: Fate/Samurai Remnant
AUTHOR: Omega Force, Koei Tecmo
Fate/Samurai Remnant lets players play as Miyamoto Iori. The combat is hack and slash style with some similarities to musou gameplay, but it falls under the Action RPG genre with dodging and looking for openings as an important element. It features a wide array of stances, which the player character can switch between on the fly. Iori uses dual katanas, a widespread weapon for Samurai during the Edo period. Players can give commands to their servant, launching special attacks and combos. In certain situations, the game allows for full control of Iori's servant, as his weapons can't be used against other servants.

"I don't get why revealing your name is bad, can they just look you up in thenhistory books and go 'aha your secret weakness is so and so' or something" Yes, actually. That's exactly it. If you know your opponents identity, you know their strengths and weaknesses. You know who they are, why they fight, often how they died. For instance, if one were to summon Achilles, your enemies wouldn't know how to beat him because he's invincible. But if Achilles named himself, all of a sudden they would know how to kill him, by striking at his heel.

Hopefully this doesn't get drowned out or considered a "spoiler" but the female Musashi servant is not from the same world as the other servants. Okay so to clear things up about Musashi: her first appearance was in a different Fate work. She has a preestablished history older fans are experienced with but shouldn't be a hassle for people going into Samurai/Remnant. Theoretically speaking, Male Musashi CAN be summoned. The way Servants work is that one person can be summoned in a wide variety of ways due to alternate timeline shenanigans or in various stages of their life or how they were viewed after death. Just as an example, if you, Nico, were a famous American soldier, you'd be viewed as a hero on one side and a villain in another. Therefore the Nico that could be summoned as a Servant could be "Evil" Nico or "Good" Nico depending on the conditions. It's a very clever play on how humans don't really have a clear consensus on how they view or portray history or how historical and mythological figures tend to have sides we don't consider. Also fun fact- Dayu and Iori are both historical domain characters! It's kinda neat because it's unusual for Fate works to feature historical characters as Masters instaed of Servants like that!

@@risu2312 I'm not the most well versed in all things Fate, but the point is that a Heroic Spirit can be summoned as the basic version or the dark ominous version depending on the conditions of summoning. This is mostly to how different groups of people, race, or country view different historical figures. Example : A war hero from country A will be remembered by citizens of country A as a great, courageous and nationalistic figure, yet remembered by country B as a war criminal who's responsible for the murder of thousands of life.

@risu2312 maybe, how servants get different versions can be weird and their interactions even more so. Sometimes times they're treated as completely different people with different ideals, other times their treated as essentially the same person just with slightly different personality and age. Other times the variants literally can't see each other. So yes two versions of a servant could fight each other, or they simply won't or physically can't.

I think the best way to compare Masters and Servants would be to Drivers and Blades from Xenoblade 2. Normally Drivers are weaker than Blades and they rely on their Blade's power to battle. At the same time a Blade needs a Driver to exist just like how a Servant needs a Master to live in the present world. There's a lot of similarities when you think about it like that. Plus Blades and Servants for some reason are hot as shit

So. Let's talk about Musashi. I'll be as spoiler-free as I can. Musashi was introduced in the mobile game Fate/Grand Order. She is very unique as far as characters in this universe go. She is able to travel across parallel worlds, however, not by choice. Any world she ends up in will eventually reject and eject her presence. Even her original world is lost to her at this point and she will never be able to go back. You can tell she's been around by how she's picked up so much different terminology. She lived her life pretty much the exact same way as the male Musashi, and as Iori notes, they're basically the same person the only difference being gender. As far as we and Musashi are aware, she is the only female variant of him. Every world she ends up in has a male Musashi who lived in it. She spends her new life travelling different worlds fighting strong opponents and honing her sword skills to master the Niten Ichiryu (Way of Two Swords). That is until she comes across the main character of Fate/Grand Order. I won't say how we know but we know for certain that this version of her is after she meets the FGO protag. PS - She is a massive fan favourite character (she's like top 5 for me easily) and even got a statue for the special edition of this game and good God it looks fantastic. PPS - Her regular Class is Saber. She does have another Berserker variant but that's a swimsuit version of her. Fun fact: her moveset in this game borrows attacks and animations from both her FGO classes.

One of the fun parts of experiencing a new Fate thing is guessing what historical figures the servants are, one hint being what class each one is. To help with guessing here's a cheat sheet on the class requirements that Servants must have met in their lives/legends. Saber, Lancer, and Archer: Must be a proficient with a sword, polearm, or non-magic based projectile weapon respectively or the weapon is so iconic for that individual that you can't imagine them without it. Rider: Must have some relation with a mount/vehicle. Caster: Must have been able to do any level of magecraft. (Writing and Science count as magecraft too) Assassin: Must have killed someone in a relatively stealthy way or have a heavy association with death. Berserker: Must have given into emotion and resorted to violence or be hard to reason with. Note: Royalty and Gods can be any class they want even if they don't meet the requirements. Note Note: These rules don't mean shit during the mobile game's summer events.

To put it as simple as I can. How servants actually works is that they are called from a place from beyond time and space. So basically there can be multiple versions of the same person to be summoned (Variants of the same legends, or in this case from different timeline). Musashi here is an example of it, the one summoned is from a different timeline where Musashi is a girl, but in Iori's timeline his Musashi is male. Edit: Also True Name is extremely important because a servant's story have a huge impact on how their power and weaknesses works, and as an important figure you know way much more about them than they know about you, including their notorious weakness. Also how they die became their weakness as a servant, especially if it's particularly infamous. So as an example for the former, Achilles and his heels, if he tells you his True Name you'd know to go for it. For the latter case, Queen Medb from Irish Mythology having weakness to cheese as a servant because she's killed by it in life.

There 4 types of gender bending in Fate. 1. You were always a woman but history remembers you as a man. This one is the most common. 2. You are summoned as a woman because of you were speculated to be a woman in disguise. This one doesn’t really happen all too often. 3. You have an Eldritch God as a patron. This only applies to some Servants in the Foreigner Class who aren’t in this game. 4. You are an alternate universe counterpart of a someone else. Musashi fits into this category and it’s been slowly becoming more common in the past few years. Also fun fact: There’s only been one instance of a female being summoned as a male and it was a horse named Red Hare.

You forgot "you lived and died as a man, but you figured out that a spirit can look however they want, so you crafted your appearance into your ideal self which happens to be a woman" or "you're actually a woman who the original male character happened to know in life, like a daughter or wife, either being summoned along with the male character, or taking their place". The lore of this game is pretty consistent with every Fate series. Instead of the Waxing Moon, it's the Holy Grail, but otherwise it's pretty consistent. Heroic Spirits do look like how they did in life (at least in the game continuity, very few of them look anything like how they looked in real life). It's not that you die and come back looking like whoever. Musashi is a unique case because she came from an alternate universe, because there's a lot of Fate alternate universes. It's probably that most Spirits come from alternate universes, but very rarely do they come back so soon after their death so nobody really.knows. Musashi didn't turn into a woman, she always was one in her universe. She's just been summoned to this one somehow

Fun fact: The main artist for this game, Rei Wataru, is also the artist for one of the on-going manga adaptations of one of Epic of Remnant chapters in Fate/Grand Order game, and in that particular one Musashi is the protagonist's main ally (as a Saber). They actually took a break on that to work on this game in fact. No spoilers beyond that, but their work in that manga is raw as all hell and perfectly captures the tone in that chapter. Man the past couple of days for Iori have gotta be the most confusing days of his life. He's participating in a battle royale he didn't want to be a part of, He's got a new sassy roommate who doesn't like him much, his house is now a mage's fortress, and to top it all off his dead master comes back as a girl. Can we give this man a round of applause for taking all of this in stride? Because I think most of us would've probably checked out of reality after all that. Incidently, I think what makes Iori and Saber's relationship so interesting and engaging is that Iori's stoic attitude really feels sort of fresh. You'd expect most protagonists to be screaming and panicking about their life being turned upside down. But Iori is just like: "ok this is happening now..." him just taking everything as it comes without batting an eye kinda makes how he interacts with Saber kind of endearing.

He actually likes to play souls games! Not particularly because it's fun, it's certainly a big part of it. No, he plays them because he would now have an excuse to delay his works. However the reason why this part might sound so confusing is because this might be an exception as this Musashi is actually the same Musashi from Fate/Grand Order, without spoiling what its already mentioned here, That Musashi can drift to other worlds and goes in and out that story, this is the same one during one of those drifts. The point is pretty much the exact same as F/SR explains it, her name is Miyamoto Musashi, she was born female and for the most part lived the same life as the old man on the beginning of the game, she died and was summoned as a servant.

@MPBoosterAxel

Nico: I'm feeling gaslit by this game's entire lore Me: Ah yes, you have just had another "Welcome to Fate" moment. So, full disclosure: Fate's lore IS actually quite complicated given that the rules of the Waxing Moon Ritual (this game's version of the commonly known Holy Grail War) are constantly broken and rewritten even in the mainline titles. However, what tends to stay consistent is the Throne, where the information of all Heroic Spirits (Servants) is contained for the ritual. But because history can be messy and written by the winners (along with the multiple timelines you actually mentioned being a thing in Fate and, you know, anime BS), almost everything about a Heroic Spirit can be up to debate: Age, Gender, Classes they qualify for, what myths are referenced, etc. So Musashi being a female is not only quite typical for Fate (as its the ONLY depiction she has in the Fate universe), it happens far more often than you'd believe. Easiest example to explain this is Leonardo Da Vinci: She's a female Caster Servant modeled heavily after the Mona Lisa, and in Fate canon he said she was the "ideal beauty" he chased and was omnipotent to his existence as a Heroic Spirit thanks to people believing he was. Thus, the Heroic Spirit Da Vinci chose to be a woman. Furthermore, to answer your question of "How much of this game follows the rules of other Fate projects," I can say for now QUITE A BIT. The mark on Iori's hand is typically known as Command Seals, which follows the set rules. Along with the seven Servants and Masters, this game seems to really stick with the regular formula of HGWs. And while it isn't TECHNICALLY always the case, the main character summoning a Saber Servant is pretty common. I'm sure the game and others will explain more and more about the lore, but I hoped to aid you a bit with the stuff I'm familiar with PS: Funny you mention Columbus, because he IS a Servant in FGO. He's one of the creepiest men in the game (his boats even appear as women in bunny girl outfits) but he's very much terrible, not a good person, and typically unliked by the majority of major players. So you're safe from a female Columbus lol

Don’t know if anyone mentioned it yet but just in case, that moment Musashi said amped wasn’t so much lost in translation as everyone around her not understanding English. During the time this game takes place Japan was in a very isolationist period where trade was limited from foreign powers to a handful of ports. Iori can only rationalize they said a Dutch word because that is the closest language they can come up with since Japan has been trading with the Dutch. It’s also been that way whenever Saber has been mentioning the Classes or Masters & Servants as well; Iori just has been rolling with things and putting (to him) made up words to faces as they come or Saber had mentioned a word that got the meaning across (ex. Master=Summoner). This sucks for FMusashi as she loves peppering her speech with English and turns of phrase from other cultures. 😂

The learning curve in this game for a beginner can be a bit rough at first because of Musashi's uniqueness, but it seems like you mostly got it. She is, as admitted by the game's producer in an interview, the reason this game exists. He's a big fan of her in Grand Order (the gacha game) to the point of wanting to make a game featuring her. As part of that, she is canonically confirmed to be the exact same character as the one in the gacha game, thanks to her unique characteristic of traveling through timelines. It's amazing how Iori is able to recognize her as Musashi just from using the same sword style. The link between master and student going beyond gender, age, and anime wackiness. One clarification on that note: while you were understandably mistaken at first about her being the old man turned woman, there's a small amount of servants that CAN do that. As their bodies are basically a projection of their soul, they can be manifested in forms different from the ones when they were alive. Generally they just look like they did in the prime of their life, but their class, personality, and unique summoning circumstances can influence that to the point of looking not very historically accurate. A key thing to understand with Fate as a whole is that its goal isn't to be as historically/mythologically accurate as possible but instead to create an interesting take on those characters by intentionally introducing changes. Sometimes the results are really cool, sometimes not so much. Depends on the writer and the amount of fanservice.

Fate has a very solid tendency to gender swap the historical figures in its universe, and in fact Fate is probably one of the first famous series that started the trend its like if Ichigo Kurosaki from Bleach was suddenly summoned into fate as a hot waifu with the only defense Nasu gives is the art is hot so I see no problem! Miyamoto Musashi says trans rights! Yeah if you were curious, the real Miyamoto Musashi from actual history was male, and he was one of the greatest swordsmen of the Edo period. He also really did develop a dual wielding style called Niten Ichiryu, which literally means “two heavens as one” and did in fact write a semi-autobiographical text called the Book of Five Rings, which is where a lot of the info we know about his life comes from (also this is just a minor tidbit, but the protag of Like a Dragon: Kenzan, the first samurai RGG spinoff, is Musashi as well. So technically Iori’s dad is Daddy Kiryu lol). Needless to say, he and his legendary exploits are a big deal and have been portrayed countless times in Japanese media. Hell, Iori was his actual adopted son too, although the jury is still out whether he had a talking magical book irl as well lol. Fate has a long history of gender bending historical figures and classic literary characters, and the reason why this started is actually kinda funny. In Stay/Night, the first VN, the protag’s servant was originally going to be male like they were in real life (I will not say their name here for obvious reasons), but the devs thought about it and said “you know, a badass female servant who kicks ass would be way cooler and sell/appeal more to the otaku demographic” and lo, a very unique and unorthodox tradition was born! And you know what? They were absolutely right, because this franchise sells gangbusters. It’s worth noting btw that not all of the Servants are gender bent, but a good portion are. If you want some added fun and like history, try guessing what figure each Servant is supposed to represent! The game won’t let you know their true names until the right moment anyway Also just a sidenote: make sure you talk to every NPC with a speech bubble on each map! You may miss some funny interactions if you don’t, just FYI

Due to the wibbly wobbly timey wimey shenanigans of the Throne of Heroes, the metaphysical space/repository where heroic spirits are stored, it's also actually entirely possible to summon a heroic spirit from the future (as in, they have not died and become a hero yet in the time period the summoner lives in). It's rare, however, as the outcome of a summoning is normally influenced by nearby persons or objects with ties to the hero, serving as a catalyst. And someone born like, 500 years later or something naturally wouldn't have much laying around for you to work with; someone else will almost always end up with priority. But it _can_ happen given some circumstances. On that note, they're addressing Yui Shousetsu as male not because of their totally not feminine looks, but because women of this era almost certainly barely have rights, much less be trained in the sword. Female Musashi actually did get disowned at a young age, I believe, and the thought of getting back at her father threw more fuel on her fire to perfect her skills.

So Hot Anime Girl Miyamoto Musashi is a character from Fate Grand/Order (the mobile gacha game). The story is that Samurai Remnant basically happened because the guys at Koei Tecmo were big fans of Fate Grand/Order and Musashi and the story arc she stars in there specifically. So they had discussions with Type-Moon and asked if they could make a Fate game with the only requirement that Musashi from Fate Grand/Order be in it. Since Musashi in-universe is a wanderer who gets thrown in different worlds, they could have done anything really, but settled for this. Despite all this, the game doesn't really require Fate Grand/Order at all to understand most of it. Which is great, because I would never want to curse you with having to play a gacha game. For your wallet's sake.

So, since people are already explaining what Fem Musashi is about, I figured I'd add in a quick bit of lore about Heroic Spirits/Servants that the game (as far as I've experienced from playing) hasn't delved into much. So, to put it simply, there is a record of any and every major figure in human history. That could be from myths, legends, folklore, or actual history. So long as they had a significant impact on humanity or the culture they were apart of and are considered human in some shape or form, they are likely within these records. these records exist across pretty much all universes as well. So you can dozens of versions of one given person within these records depending on the different variations of their stories as well as the alterations from one timeline to another (Which can include different classes for them to be summoned in). The ritual they are apart of basically allows those who do so to summon the recordings of these people. They aren't the real deal basically, but rather idolized versions of them given physical form. This also means different interpretations and variations do exist. While normally you can't summon versions from other universes, as Musashi herself states and plenty of others explain, she's kind of an exception. So effectively, she's just a different Musashi. Same person, history, and personality more or less, but she happens to be female. It's weird and very round about, but that's Fate for you. I hope that helps a bit with both Musashi and kind of understanding what's going on with the servants PS. The holy Grail is basically the OG ritual that this one is being based on. There are differences between the two but the general idea is the same. I'll let you discover what's different on your own though

Without diving into any specific story spoilers for the rest of the franchise Because most Servants draw as much from their stories as their historical attestations being able to ID one is basically a means of getting at least a general sense of their powers… and more importantly their weaknesses (like if they died a special way in their legends). Granted this is way more valuable in the rest of the franchise, which occurs during the 20th/21st Century, where libraries and computers offer a lot more information Gathering ability. In this game that takes place in the 17th Century… it’s not quite as powerful. Also this is why Servants usually go by their assigned class, even to And with their Masters.

Nico, when it comes to the lore, don't worry about it if you don't understand something. It does get explain in more detail in other places. I will do a quick explanation of the Heroic spirit concept, basically people who have left an impact on earth (Major or minor) often gets their soul or impact written into the earth as a self-defense force, the Ritual basically tricks the defenses force to summon the figure in this form. It's not their true body, it's their "Ghost" body powered by their soul.

So to put it bluntly, yes changing the gender of historical figures, usually from male to female, is a pretty common occurrence in the Fate series. It's nowhere near universal, in fact a majority of the historical characters are usually the correct genders. However, it is common enough to be a noted trend. Fate tends to give a variety of in-universe reasons why history has recorded these figures as the wrong gender from purposeful disguises, to record mistakes to sexist spite. The female Musashi you see here actually debuted in the mobile game FGO and had a rather unique reason for her gender change when compared to the other characters. This reason of course will be discussed in game so I won't go into it here.

The answer is yes, Nico this is exactly the reason why you're not supposed to know who they are that reveals their weaknesses. I mean if you look up the actual method of how Hercules died! Or I should say Heracles either way do not encounter the female version or else you'll be heavily demonetized because let's just say the ultimate weakness of Hercules is wearing a shirt. Also another history lesson that you might actually need to know about a long time ago before the Yen was created Japanese Society used to run on the trade system of rice because you were literally growing and eating your own money so yes farmers were also extremely wealthy.

No, Takao Dayu is not a heroic spirit, as far as I am aware. She wasn't referring to HERSELF when she talked aout 'the dead returning to the world'. If she was a heroic Spirit, she wouldn't be commmanding another Heroic Spirit, and she certainly wouldn't be identified by name so quickly. also....you never heard of leylines? they're basically just like...tunnels of spiritual energy/magic in the earht, they're a common thing in tales of spirituality ad magic, they pop up a LOT in anime and videogames too.

The 1st OST you hear after loading and talking to Musashi was actually hurting my heart. Like reaaaaaaally painfully. Like twisting a knife into my heart. *Sniff sniff...* so many memories... Also, yes, you picket it up real fast, Yes the multiverse and different timelines are a real thing. PS. The best example for explaining the True Name knowledge is this. Let's say you're fighting Achilles, so you know his weakness is his heel. As it's so well know around the world. 'Achilles heel'

Fate's probably the only series where I can confidently say I wanna smash Miyamoto Musashi without getting weird stares. Fun fact, if I'm not mistaken, this Musashi we see was first introduced in the mobile game and is a fan favourite and naturally has several figures including one that came out celebrating with this game. Do what you will with that information... In any case, smash on waifu Genghis Khan. Next question.

Shell gauge enemies with red attacks can still have their attacks interrupted (other than riposte) with a timely affinity technique

When enemies with Shell gauges start glowing red, Iori can't interrupt them. You're correct that the red attacks can be interrupted, but only normal enemies can be interrupted by a heavy attack. To interrupt the red attack of an enemy wiht a Shell gauge, you have to use one of your Servant's skills.

The fact you brought up Christopher Columbus "still being horrendously racist" made me laugh so hard, because he's *also* a Servant in the gacha game. He's not a hot girl in it, though.

I think my favorite part about watching nico play a fate game is seeing him getting a character's gender reverse uno'd on him every like 3rd character 😂

I wonder if the Waxing moon ritual is a flawed one? Saber doesn't seem to have the encyclopedic knowledge that servants would naturally have once summoned.
