GAME: Fate/Samurai Remnant
AUTHOR: Omega Force, Koei Tecmo
Fate/Samurai Remnant lets players play as Miyamoto Iori. The combat is hack and slash style with some similarities to musou gameplay, but it falls under the Action RPG genre with dodging and looking for openings as an important element. It features a wide array of stances, which the player character can switch between on the fly. Iori uses dual katanas, a widespread weapon for Samurai during the Edo period. Players can give commands to their servant, launching special attacks and combos. In certain situations, the game allows for full control of Iori's servant, as his weapons can't be used against other servants.

"Kinoko Nasu" is the co-founder of Type-Moon, the company that produces the Fate games. He's the author Fate/Stay Night, the original VN. He supervises the lore of the franchise, even for games he doesn't personally write. He was a consultant for Samurai Remnant, for example. The reason the lore is called the "Nasuverse" is because, technically, there's more to the canon than just Fate. Before he wrote F/SN, he wrote a VN called "Tsukihime", and before THAT he wrote a series of light novels called "Garden of Sinners." There's also a VN written after F/SN called "Witch on the Holy Night." These other works don't really have anything to do with Fate in terms of characters or continuity, but the "big picture" is the same. The cosmology, rules of magic, power systems and whatnot are shared.

About Tsuchimikado: He... Exists? He's a real guy but no one important in history. A descendant of the legendary Abe no Seimei (allegedly) his family line were known as prolific onmyouji. However during the time Tsuchimikado was alive Onmyouji fell out of favor with the Tokugawa Shogunate running Japan, and so the importance of onmyouji faded away.

So Nico the issue of Fate characters appearing in google searches for historical and mythological figures is an actual real documented issue. There was a study in which the effect was dubbed the Astolfo Effect. This is an actual thing that can be a thorn in the side of people looking for information on some figures.

To clarify many comments from last episode including Tanner’s, yes the original version of FSN Visual Novel is an eroge due to it having h scenes. Keep in mind though that those scenes are not the entirety of the game and are probably around 20-30 minutes in total compared to the visual novel which is about 100+ hours depending on if you 100% the game. So yes the original visual novel may have h scenes therefore it is classified as an eroge but it’s not just straight up porn the entire game. Also keep in mind at the time most visual novels in the early 2000s but not all of them included h scenes in order to drive sales which the creator Kinoko Nasu admitted he was urged by his friend and the Co-Owner of Type Moon Takeuchi to include the h scenes in order to drive sales. Thanks to the commercial success of the original release and the sequel, Nasu and Takeuchi released a remastered version without the h scenes in what they consider to be the definitive/final version and was also marketed as “the best” version. Anyway HOPEFULLY this clarifies a lot and won’t scare you from reading the visual novel in the future if interested as many of the best character and story aspects from Samurai Remnant are seen in the visual novel and one could argue portrayed even better.

You made note of it but yeah, Musashi has been throwing in English words into her speech this whole time, not unlike a modern Japanese speaker. At this point in history, Japan mostly had contact with two western countries: Portugal (which at the time of the game had recently been banned from commerce with Japan) and the Netherlands. So English hadn't had the time to penetrate the language the way it has today in modern Japanese. The translation has been doing two things to try to convey that other people don't understand her: have her use various modern English colloquialisms, or, the much more common solution for "Japanese person speaking English in a translated game", have her use French words ("bijou" is French for jewel/gem). Then either Iori or Saber will repeat the word but written wrong or phonetically. The reason Musashi uses English is due to a certain... very silly visit to the USA in FGO (during which she pretended to be Iori and spent half the time in a mixed American flag print bikini and cowboy outfit). Here's an extra bit of cultural info: when Musashi introduced herself as a "god of wrath", she specifically name dropped herself as Fudo Myou. In East-Asian Buddhism but particularly in Japan, Fudo Myou was worshipped as a protector god and specifically one that destroys evil and removes obstacles. Whenever you use her Noble Phantasm, you'll hear her chanting a prayer to him and using his various names across Asia (Nioh Kurikara or Hayagrīva).

Not necessarely She went to the USA well before that, she mention it to Ritsuka during Shimousa Ritsuka even flex how he traveled the whole thing while Musashi gave up midway During the Las Vegas Event she is already a Servant, so most english words could just be explained by the Grail giving her info in the modern era rather than her actually meeting english speakers

Yes Nico, that is what Samson was known for! I won't confirm or deny your theory (because I'm not really a Fate expert either, I've hardly touched the series at all), but Samson's story in the Book of Judges is essentially that God bestowed him with superhuman strength on the condition that he never cut his hair or shave. Well, his lover was bribed by the Philistine officials to find out his weakness and report it to them. She asks, he lies or just doesn't answer, and eventually through sheer persistence, she gets him to cave. That night, she has someone cut Samson's hair, and he loses his strength. He's taken by the Philistines, his eyes are gouged out, and forced to work in a grain mill. Eventually he is brought to a temple with the officials, and he prays. He regains his strength, and uses it to bring the temple down on top of all of them, killing everyone including himself. Whether this is the correct option or not I'd say he'd make a pretty solid Fate character based on what we've seen so far.

The Nasuverse is a collection of stories that have been written, or overviewed by Kinoku Nasu. These stories include: The entire fate series, Tsukihime, Mahoutsukai no Yoru (Witch on the holy night), and Kara no Kyoukai (or Garden of sinners). These series are distinct enough to not take place in the fate timelines, but run on similar principles. For example, for Fate and Tsukihime, magic works in exactly the same way, however it is Impossible to servants to be summoned in Tsukihime.

So, Nico, the reason it's called Nasuverse is because Nasu is the pen name of the main writer who started it, Fate is the most popular series in this verse, but it is not the only one, or the first one, there are other series as well. So cinematic that I Fate/Grand Order, Noble Phantasms cannot be skipped (but there is an option to show a shortened version). Also, if a Heroic Spirit is unknown in Grand Order, it will still do the animation, but the name will be an alias or just be unknown. As someone who loves transformations, theatrical special attacks, and summons in games and TV, it checks all boxes for epic battles for me.

1:30:47 Not quite. Bijou is used in English to refer to jewels or pieces of jewelry and/or small intricate metalwork. It is borrowed from French language, where it also means "jewelry". In the Japanese text, Musashi simply peppers in English words in a way that's pretty common for modern Japanese, but would be confusing for 1651. Since that wouldn't work in English, the localizers in those moments have her use terms and expressions that weren't yet introduced into the English language by the middle of 17th century (as far as I can find, at least). For comparison, Mitsuru from Persona 3 has a similar gimmick of peppering in English into her speech, but in English localization it is instead French. I think Takao's story here serves as a reference to Takao II's deaths, historic and fictional. As far as we can tell, the second Takao Dayu died of illness (tuberculosis, presumably) when she was nineteen, while in fiction she was killed by a samurai, angry at her for rejecting his advances. Here both instead are repurposed into social issues of lacking healthcare (the woman Dayu brought medicine for) and wanton violence (the retainer that would have killed Dayu, had Musashi not appeared) that Yoshiwara courtesans have to face, and that Dayu hopes to overturn. At least, that's my reading of it.

So people over time have come to call this multiverse, the Nasuverse after the original creator. Random Fate Trivia #10 This one goes out to Tanner for introducing Nico who opened his eyes to how the Fate series started. Let's dive into one of the more longstanding memes about the original eroge: the god awful (but all hilarious) sex scenes specifically. I should say this right now: there has been no official English version of the original. So we're going off of the assumption that everyone's playing the Realta Nua version, english patch by Mirror Moon. We good? Good. Remember, Fate is a fantasy series with its own set of rules and sometimes you have absolute gold mines in there that are so out of nowhere that it's REALLY funny, because its trying to incorporate fantasy elements to a simple act of lovemaking (the aforementioned mana transfer, yes it is 100% how Nasu wrote it, it still is how its handled in future mentions in the series). I won't specifically mention a scene in the original because again, that would constitute as spoiler territory but the eroge is chock full of badly written sex scenes, even when it's supposed to be super normal. You can chalk it up to maybe the translation was poor, but some of us have taken in the headcanon that Nasu really is that bad at writing sex scenes that the translation really does read as it being super weird (not helped by the other visual novels he's written that also has sex scenes). Because of said poor writing, the community likes to reference this by re-telling it exactly how it was translated/written. Completely out of context at times, but if you knew, you knew and you would laugh at it. Addendum: Oh, Nico did know about how bad the translation was! That makes it easier.

When you really get down to it the servant on servant battles are like if FF16 had more Eikon fights and you controlled more than two. Which says a lot that the one on ones with these guys can be likened to a Kaiju brawl in another game.

I'd like to give a bit more info on Berserker class Servants. Some Berserkers can be known for being quite the rage addicts, fighting in a berserker state. But some aren't entirely known for it. The Berserker class is essentially a power boost. But the cost is what you see in the skills. Madness Enhancement...extra stat buffs but a high potential to lose the ability to speak a normal language. Berserkers have pros and cons. That's why Rogue Berserker has what looks like fluctuating volume symbols instead of words. I'm betting he wants to talk...but he can't. Also, you've narrowed down Rogue Berserker's identity with your guesses. His tale is in the Bible.

Just like Rogue Lancer and Gilgamesh, yep, Jeanne d'arc is definitely one of the popular ones. She indeed has showed up in multiple titles, 3 including this one. One aspect of Fate that I love is the fact it does not shy away from some hard historical truths some other franchises may gloss over. Everything about the "pleasure district" is painfully honest here - yes, these are women who men look at through wooden jail cells to try and go in and pay to sleep with. However, many of them are literally trapped there, either financially or through other means. There's both nobility to this profession as well as the darkness of how society looks at it. Dayu wants to free her sisters, not out of guilt but out of genuine care for them. She's not good, she's not bad, she simply has a desire and will do whatever it takes to make it happen. The game doesn't bonk you over the head with ohhhhhhh!! Women who have sex!!!!!! but it also doesn't shy away from the truths of their situation. This aspect of the Nasuverse is unmatched in my eyes - never before have I seen a franchise where, say, an Indian character and a British character have a brutally honest talk about the effects of the Indian Mutiny on their cooperation. It has me Googling a lot, but that's a good thing.

Yup nasuverse is named after the creator of fate. This is because he not only does fate stories but it includes his other works as well. And all of it is canon. Every single work. So! The Nasuverse. You asked, so let me give you the abridged version! Nasuverse is taken by the creator of the Fate Series, Kinoko Nasu. Nasu and a few others are responsible for the company behind the OG Visual Novel, Type Moon, and LOVES connecting their works together to create a whole universe (read: Nasuverse) full of mystics, magic, and man jam. Fate is a part of this Nasuverse, but within Fate is a Kaleidoscope of different timelines, events, so on so forth. Looking at it all from the outside is. Scary, to say the least! So now that you're inside it, I'm sitting down waiting for all the dominoes to fall. >:)

Nico: What's a Nasu? Kinoko Nasu is the co-founder of Type-Moon and is author which had created the Fate series. He was convinced to put in H scenes into the original Visual Novel by the other co-founder of his company to help boost its sales. And the Nasu-Verse refers to the collection of series that he created which share elements and concepts. Concepts that aren't touched upon or properly explained in Samurai Remnant. Also, if your wondering, no servants and masters are not concepts shared between each series in the Nasu-verse. They're a Fate thing. Of course, there are some official crossover between different parts of the series. With certain installments being canonically sequels to what came before. An example of this is the Tsukihime series, and its remake, being a Sequel to Witch on the Holy Night. Ironic since Tsukihime released in 2000 while Witch on the Holy Night came out in 2012. Anyway, there series that aren't suppose to crossover due to being fundmentally different in major way. An example of this is Fate and Tsukihime. However, this rule for the pair had been broken a few times. With Fate/Strange Fake, Carnival Phantasm(highly recommend you watch), Melty Blood Type Lumia, and the FGO JP 2022 anniverssary servant. -We FGO players did recieve a trailer Tsukihime collab years ago that the devs made as a joke for April's Fools.

Nico, on the stats, I think NP stands for Noble Phantasm At this point as someone who knows fuck all about fate, Musashi just feels like the protagonist, strong as hell, spunky and does what she wants, has been traveling from world to world and knows most of these servants. Also is a hot woman, one thing I learned is that Fate likes to make historical and mythical beings into anime girls

I would say honestly checking out the visual novel wouldn't be a bad idea especially since the version most people read nowadays is called the "Ultimate Edition" which allows you to choose ingame whether you read the original release with the H-scenes or the modern Realta Nua Scenes (Which the all-ages version is called). As others have said checking out the original scenes could be worth it just because of how unintentionally funny they are sometimes which I do agree with. Honestly though no matter what you do I would love to see what your thoughts are on Fate/Stay Night as it's my favorite visual novel so the more people that read it the better!

As many others have said, don't let the fact that Fate started as an eroge dissuade you from reading the original VN. The ultimate edition that exists online is a patch of a rerelease without the sex scenes, with the options to turn off only some censorship (some scenes are meant to be dark and the rerelease kinda overcorrected them), choose the original soundtrack or a remaster and so much more. The visual novel is easily my favourite story of all time, and I would love to see you tackle it.

So here's a rundown of terms in case you're confused, Nico. Kinoko Nasu: The creator/writer of the original Fate VN, as well as other stories created under Type Moon. Type-Moon: The doujin group turned multi-million dollar company Co-Founded by Nasu and his best friend/Illustrator Takeuchi that published their works. This includes VNs, Novel, Manga, and Games. Nasuverse: the term coined by fans referring to Kinoko Nasu's body of work, of which include stories that uses the same magic system/ world building. This includes Visual Novels like Tsukihime (Moon Princess) and Light Novels like Kara No Kyokai: Garden of Sinners. Eroge: Games that have elements of sex scenes being explicitly shown as content. While the Original Release of Fate/ Stay Night did have spicy scenes, it was never the focus of the story as it was mostly there to explain the concept of Mana Transfer. An all-ages version dubbed Realta Nua version was released, replacing said sex scenes with other ways to transfer energy. Mana Transfer: a term lovingly coined by fan translators Mirror Moon for their work on the Fate/ Stay Night VN as an act of giving mages energy. There are different ways to do this, but the VN mostly use this term to refer to the spicy actions. Just to be clear, the the very spicy scenes were not written well and are always the butt of jokes when referring to the VN's infamous spicy scenes. It was speculated to be due to how Nasu badly wrote the spicy scenes.

the franchise is called the nasuverse because 1) the guy who made it is called Nasu and 2) while Fate shit is like the majorty of it, there are other works tied to the setting that arne't a part of the Fate franchise and are their own things but still a aprt of the same universe, such as Tsukihime (which is about vampires). also if you were able to do it I'd love it if you managed to play the original Fate Stay Night in its uncensored glory. It should be noted that while its an eroge due to having sex scenes in it, however unlike msot eroge (especially these days) the sex scenes are very few in number and infrequent, allowing later editions to create censored, alternative scenes to replace them. However I do think the sex scenes work in context of how they build relationships and how characters act and stuff (Like watching the first anime version based on FSN without the context behind a certain scene originally being a sex scene that wasn't put in the anime or obvious reasons made me think how a certain character acted after it felt SUPER weird, you kinda need the context of "these characters FUCKED" for their behaviour after to make sense)

The Nasuverse, or Type Moon Shared Setting is a term for stuff written by Type-Moon. Kinoko Nasu being head writer, personally wrote it all before they got popular, then they hired guys who write spinoffs, and help write the mobile game. Fate Samurai Remnant is written by the spinoff guys and Koei's own writers. It's mostly alternate timelines, with lots of shared concepts and occasional characters. Stuff like how the magic system works, Mages' Association, Servants, Vampires, general history, etc. Fate is way larger than the rest of it combined, but some of the other characters that Nasu wrote pop up in various titles. Every Fate fan knew it was Jeanne from the start. Jeanne d'Arc (blue version) is a protagonist of Fate/Apocrypha, and Jeanne d'Arc Alter is a breakout character in the mobile game. Frankly, the mobile players worked out most of the Servants nearly as soon as they were announced.

Nasuverse is a term for the Type-Moon multiverse. In case you don’t know, Type-Moon is the company in charge of Fate as well as other series (Tsukihime, The Garden of Sinners, Witch of the Holy Night, etc.) that are all part of the same multiverse/parallel timelines. Nasu is one of the founders of Type-Moon alongside Takeuchi, the former is the head writer of Type-Moon as a whole and the latter is his illustrator buddy. Nasuverse itself is a fan term that has stuck around since forever to talk about anything Type-Moon related. Edit: Interesting thing about Jeanne d’Arc is that this is a case of an “Alter” Servant. Alters are a kind of corrupt form that a Servant can be in, and there are many ways it could happened. 1. Corruption from outside force (either during or after being summoned) that disrupt their ideals and beliefs and making them doing things outside of their morals. 2. Summoned as an Alter Servant, summoning an aspect of them that are either usually antithesis to their overall image. 3. Fictional Servant derived from the existing ones created from powerful artifacts (Like the Holy Grail) that is intentionally created to fits the creator’s ideal instead of their original’s. These are impossible to summon normally as they are case-specific. 4. The Servant intentionally letting go of their ideals, compromising the most important part of their legend and becoming an Alter. 5. Sometimes they’re categorized as an Alter because they’re from a different timeline or a “What ifs” (Musashi isn’t considered one btw, this category is inconsistent) These tends to have different power sets from their original self so Jeanne here have vastly different kit than when she’s usually summoned (Her default class is Ruler). Btw the whole Alter thing is never explained here, nor is she called Jeanne d’Arc Alter, just Jeanne d’Arc
