Yeah me too! Less gringos in the outlying areas! I speak well enough Spanish to get everything I want so that helps. Plus it’s cheaper further away from el centro. I am not rich and competing with the well to do is not fun when the locals think I am rich. They should look at my shoes that I have had repaired over the two years of having worn them ❤

Great video, and talking points. As Marianna from Mexico Relocation Guide said a few days ago, "The media loves to divide people. It's up to you, the people, to not let themselves be divided." I see this division in Social Media as well, with (usually young) influencers trying to attract a following by complaining and sowing division. (Bringing up colonialism, gentrification, etc. while overlooking the fact that inflation - food, energy, housing, and higher costs of living - has affected nations around the world.) But human beings have always been a bit xenophobic - it's in our DNA - and it's easy to blame "foreigners" or the other tribe for our problems. Shifting blame and creating a foreign enemy allows leaders, politicians, and influencers to attract a following and provide an outlet for their frustration.

You should see the video of a woman from the United States yelling at a girl to get out of a public area, because they rented it, they want to live controlling everything like in the US AND THAT DOES NOT GO WITH OUR CULTURE, in Mexico in public places we usually, mix the rich, the middle class and the poor, we are not like you who want everything as a private area that even harass the delivery people

Jose, I love the way you think. You made so many great points. Americans can really ruin a place. I would love to visit Merida, but I avoid it because of the number of gringos there. I often visit Zacatecas and San Luis Potosi, which are very beautiful cities. Also, you don't get so many gringos there. By the way, Zacatecas has bands playing every weekend. They march down the sidewalk, and people dance and follow them. I love it!

Can't you just say you like some cities over others? Less than 1% of the population of Merida are foreigners. Most of them live in Centro. Don't go to Centro. San Miguel de Allende is called Gringolandia; 10% of the population are foreigners. In New York City, 40% of the population is foreign born. Miami and LA are next of the large cities.

Hi, I just found your channel a couple of weeks ago, and I really enjoy your content, I'm from Monterrey and I speak English since I was like 4, but I'd never lived in the US, my parents got me into schools that taught English, I also learned Brazilian Portuguese about 7 years ago, I'm a translator and interpreter here in Monterrey, both my parents are super into rock and metal, I was not raised listening to Latin music at all, it's not like I hate the music, It's just not my thing because I grew up listening to american and english rock/metal, but I have to say that I'm a little bit on the side of the banda's because it's Mexican culture I do agree that the problem are the business owners, would I be a little uncomfortable listening to banda because it's not my type of music? Sure, but nonetheless it's the essence and flavor of our people and costumes

Gentrification has a specific definition. That definition does not include well-off people moving into desirable locations at prices some natives cannot afford. Gentrification involves the development of less than desirable locations that necessarily may, again, may lead to long-term residents leaving due to higher taxes and increased prices in the locale. Gentrification leads to improved living standards for those who develop and buy in the redeveloped areas.
@JoseArteagaTravels
@JoseArteagaTravels 2 месяца назад
I totally agree. Gentrification is when a not so desirable neighborhood is usually populated by starving artist types that move there due to the cheap rent of the neighborhoods nobody wants to live in to begin with. Eventually they build the place up with shops and coffee houses to give a few examples and then it turns from a dangerous run down neighborhood to a hipster neighborhood. Eventually that area starts to get popular due to the fact its not as dangerous anymore and now filled with the hipster types. Then the place starts to look nicer and more people come in to live, shop, and continue growing the neighborhood which then triggers the greedy investors to come in and start to build homes and businesses there that are now all of a sudden to expensive and then the original inhabitants which lived there through the worst of times, and got to experience a bit of growth and good times are now priced out. Also the same hipsters who came in that started the initial boom they are also priced out and the people who eventually take their place are people who can afford to live in the now, "nice neighborhood" that is safe, new, nice, and of course "cool". The people that eventually take over are the ones who want to pay the higher prices because of what the area has now become. Also the area then eventually becomes inaccesible to most people and only becomes availble to those of higher incomes. It is a Cycle that constantly repeats itself all over the world. That cycle is called gentrification. A lot of people think that only the last part "when the investors and the higher income level folk move in" is gentrification when in reality it all starts soon as the first hipster is selling art or coffee in a bad neighborhood no one wants to be in to begin with.

Another cool walk-around video with a solid talking point of concern. On a separate issue, but one that perhaps you could discuss is the affordability between cities and why Merida is more expensive than Guadalajara and Querétaro for example. If you do comparisons on numbeo not only are those cities less expensive to live in but the average salaries are higher than those in Merida - so that exasperates the cost of living in Merida even further. Or put another way, both Guadalajara and Queretaro have higher salaries AND the cost of living is lower than Merida’s. So this issue makes Merida seem expensive in comparison to the others - why is this? And what makes Merida more expensive yet pay lower salaries? Hola de Canada y gracias Jose 👊
@JoseArteagaTravels
@JoseArteagaTravels 2 месяца назад
Great topic suggestion. You are right, and it is a very complicated issue. But simply put it is similar to Florida, Highest cost of living and lowest wages in the country. A lot of it has to do with the fact that its warm and on the beach. Another factor is the growth in the region is continuing to grow and there is no insentive for buisness owners to raise salaries, just the costs of everyday things, while life gets even more expensive and dificult for locals. Also most of the food and supplies have to be shipped in from central Mexico thus causing higher prices. Then theres the culture.... as you suggested I think I should do a video about this in the future. Thanks for sharing

@@JoseArteagaTravels yes you should and I look forward to watching it and hearing your perspectives further. Some of us really love and respect Mexican culture. I love the band music and the joy and dancing that goes with it I also have lived all my life with a curse of actual pain with loud sounds. I like all kinds of music when I can turn the volume down. I’m guessing that I’m not the only one. Some of us just have extra sensitive ears even though we love the music. I’m not asking anyone else to change what they are doing, just saying that sound sensitivity is not always from a disrespect of the culture. Thanks for listening.

I heard from a real estate agent in Mexico that the reason it's costing more to build a home in Mexico is because concrete and steel cost alot more, but the whole time I was wondering does Mexico produce it's own concrete and steel, and if so, why is the cost going up so much higher than standard inflation rates for most products. Any thoughts on this Jose? could you get to the bottom of the steel and concrete market in Mexico? I know supply chain disruptions are causing stuff like this to happen in the US. but if Mexico still produces these raw products it shouldn't be so high for them.

They said it was because of rising steel and concrete costs (which maybe to is a lie), I don't know what to think. Gringo pricing perhaps? Yeah, you say that cuz you're americanized and pushing for something. However, REAL native people to jalisco feel VERY different. If I wasn't to up to date on thus situation, I'd be willing to agree that it's not gentrification. However, it takes about an hour to fully understand that it's not racism from Mexican peoples side and that it is gentrification. US/CAD go out of their way to take over certain neighborhoods and whenever a Mexican passes by there, they have the audacity to tell them they don't belong there. Just like HOA Karen's do here in the US. Add to that, that Mexican people aren't very into those things because if you study their history, you realize that that's how they lost practically half their country. Some white folk took over an area and had another country involved causing them to lose states. So I think they have EVERY right to do as they please. Heck, if they ban US and CAD people completely, I'd be "good on them". We are know to be trashy tourist and even worst immigrants.

Yes, i agree with that statement: to not let the voices of the minority ruin it! 🎉 As an American, i never had a problem with Mexicans in our country. As of now, its our government tht is allowing the insane amt of migrants here. I grew up with Mexican immigrants all my life, cant say I ever had a problem with any of them! This is why i always wanted to go to Mexico! I still cant wrap my head around all the news abt the Mexicans hating on us. Although, there are completely self entitled American ppl that are just down right arrogant and have ruined it for the majority of us who arent! I wish tht this will get resolved sooner thsn later but i think that this matter will just be an ongoing thing. Can't undo what has been done so to soeak, sadly. I just pray that God will somehow intervene. We have to try to see the best in everyone ❤ I pray for Mexico just abt every day for the good of the ppl and its land to prosper and be at peace as well as the US. ❤

Ok Jose. In the US people in a lot of working class jobs dont get enough pay to have people live in the area. We were recently in a chain type Mexico based restaurant. We asked the waitress about things and we found that she lived nearby. She didnt think prices had gone up as much as people claimed. The internet media builds on themes. One theme is that US immigrants are gentrifying areas. But in Mexico City there are many areas that are free from gentrification whoever is causing it. Gentrification is a buzzword. But zones and areas in cities are always going to be redeveloped, reworked and improved.

Border towns in Mexico are already heavily affected by gentrification. Everything is almost as expensive as the USA. Condos are over half a million dollars plus.

That's not the only place in Mexico even out here in Merida Yucatan things are starting to get out of control. I seen people price properties in the Millions of Dollars a lot more expensive than in the US. The bubble should be popping any day now.....

The US does not make Mexican people speak English. I can show you a plethora of factories in Chicago that you can’t be the Jefe, unless you speak Spanish. By the way, in Guadalajara there are quite a few American companies that thrive in the area. GM, Molex, Medtronic, plus quite a few more. One thing that I don’t like is when Mexico makes a great product and you just can’t buy it in Mexico. I have had to order Mexican made boots from the USA. How does that make sense.

Gotta be a trade agreement issue
@JoseArteagaTravels
@JoseArteagaTravels 2 месяца назад
When I was a chef my ability to speak Spanish fluently was just as important as my other skills. I totally agree with you on the language issue in the USA. Also the same thing you are dealing with when it comes to the boots I deal with sometimes with car parts for my truck made in Mexico. I'm sure theres some weird loophole in the trade agreement that forces this issue.

@@moreno-lh7ys I did, cheap China synthetics. The factory that makes Thursday boots doesn’t sell the boots in Mexico. For Western boots, I can go to Durango and find very little family makers of boots. Seems like all the good year welt factories just don’t sell in the country.

I've actually heard that multiple times as well out here in Mexico. That basically Mexico isn't a super power simply because it doesn't want to be. After living here for 6 years I see it. I see how AMAZING this country and it's people truly are and i also see why they would rather just sit in the shadows and enjoy life and not try to take over the world like other countries do. Que Viva Mexico!

I really like your videos. I get it. But I have lived here 40years. And I don't like gringos. But ya I get it. The thing I think the other thing that we all don't like is that way of thinking that is taking over the United States. I wish they could just leave it up north. This is not the United States This is Mexico. Don't try to change it. Or don't come down here.

The only negative observation I have of Mexico is the high tolerance level Mexicans have when playing music. I don’t think the concept of noise pollution has arrived here yet. Music is either loud or off. It’s pretty heavy.

Just like any other country or culture, people want to be more white or black or brown. It really is an interesting dynamic how people always want to be what they are not instead of just embracing who they are. Thanks for sharing

Almost all cultures/races value lighter-skinned people over darker. Women in ancient Japan powdered their faces to look white and carried parasols when outdoors so they wouldn't get a tan. China, too. They had never seen people who are naturally white; it was their preference. Likely, Mexicans in the US want to be white so they fit in better and avoid discrimination. I don't blame them.

@@viajandoyaprendiendoconRicardo I worked in international banking most of my career and with Latin Americans, including Mexicans, for about 10 of those years. All of them spoke English perfectly, and all of them had college and/or master's degrees, usually in finance or economics (they were in offices in their home countries so presumably, they spoke their native language perfectly, too). They all were highly professional and had perfect manners. None of them had chips on their shoulders. So, of course, they were hired by top multi-national financial services firms.

@@viajandoyaprendiendoconRicardo Well, it sounds like you have a talent for languages. Not everyone does, so it's something you can make a living at or at least it will help you get a job that someone who only speaks one language won't be eligible for. And good for you making sure your kids are bi-lingual. My parents didn't bother, although few people speak French in the US except near the Canadian border, so it never mattered. My son took Spanish in school, and he can get by when he has to.
