You can activate an auto-light feature on the 5610 by holding down the light button until you see "LT" pop up on the display. This uses an accelerometer and light sensor in the solar panel to turn the light on when you tilt your wrist in the dark. You mention the watch dying on you in the field (which I find incredibly hard to believe), perhaps it was the power-saving mode? This is on by default and shuts off the screen at night to save battery. The 5610 has a battery indicator (unlike the bluetooth models) and if charged to H can power the watch for 10 months in total darkness. Batteries do drain faster in the cold but it shouldn't be an issue if you're actually wearing the watch. Your residual body temp should be enough to keep it well above the lower operating range (-10C) and if you treat the watch like your camera batteries (i.e. keeping it in your sleeping bag at night) it should never die on you. Purely anecdotal but I've winter camped with F91Ws that were never designed for the cold and they are unscathed. You could have a lemon :P But even if that were the case you could easily pop the 4 screws out back and replace the rechargeable CTL1616 capacitor ($20) and it will work like new. Also, the bezels and straps can be easily replaced with new ones for a few bucks so there should never be a need to throw the watch out when it's beat to hell. Short of extreme abuse where the resin lugs become compromised, these watches can easily hold up for decades. Great comparison BTW, the Polar Explorer is awesome and I would try to wear that as much as possible if I did have one haha.

I’m surprised you’d rely on an inaccurate mechanical watch for actual timekeeping. Quartz, solar, and smart watches are much more accurate.

Yeah, I use to have quartz, solar, and smart watches, but they keep failing on me when I was in sub-zero temp. I have learned anything with batteries I can't fully trust. Have have far less issues with mechanical watch. Cheers

I've owned four Rolexes and over ten G-Shocks. I can enjoy them both for what they are. Regarding some of your issues, most of my G-Shocks will auto-light for nighttime viewing (you don't have to push the button) and I can set the light for 1.5 or 3 seconds. Also, I've never broken one (other than a torn strap, which you can replace for $30). You've chosen an inexpensive model. With a mid-range version ($300-$400), most of the issues you mentioned are gone, plus you have added useful features (altimeter, barometer, compass, temperature, etc.). Fun watched and fun video.

Not even close towards Casio as a beater. Changing the strap to a nato will make it immortal. Accuracy the 5610 was multi and so second will always be on point. Every time you pick up the Casio it’s on time and ready. Rolex needs servicing
@cheynewalls
@cheynewalls 11 месяцев назад
Well yes and no. The Rolex does need to be serviced, but only every 10 years. I have never had a G-Shock even last 5 years. I really like my G-Shock as a temporary tool, good value for price. I'll service my Rolex every 10 years, but have it for the rest of my life.

@@cheynewalls However that Rolex clearly hasn't been banged against rocks, dropped or kept in less than ideal carrying cases. I guess your G-Shocks are destroyed rather fast because you can afford to do so since it's cheaper, plus it's designed to "go to war". If put through the same conditions, I would expect that Rolex to have signs on its bracelets, dents, etc. The G-Shock is also a diver's watch.

@@gs7828 Its been dropped, smashed against rocks and trees, its actually put through more than my G-shock because I wear it every day. If you didn't notice in my travel videos I have my Explorer on a leather strap. Don't really wear the bracelets when in the field. I love my G-shock, they just aren't good in sub-zero temp. The plastic becomes brittle and cracks or buttons broke, battery goes to s..t as well. I can only go with past experiences. Cheers

@gs7828 10 месяцев назад
@@cheynewalls Interesting, I don't doubt what you say, it just didn't seem so looking at the condition of the watch, especially the shiny sides, the corners of the bezel or the bracelet, but it makes sense that you would swap it, sure. In sub-zero temperatures an automatic also experiences potential pressure changes that can invalidate the visibility or sealing. But most importantly, the internal oils can dry. I say this wearing an automatic Citizen Promaster NY0085 on a kaki NATO strap as my only watch.
@cheynewalls

@@gs7828 I'm not sure what video clips you are looking at, but also a lot of our "beauty shots" where filmed when I got the watch and are placed through out all videos. A 100% that sub-zero temps are hard on all watches, just from my experience the Explorer handles it so well and I don't see that changing. I'm talking snow camping over a mouth each year. It takes a special watch to thrive in that. Cheers

It is crazy that even buying the most expensive MRG square using very high grade materials, coating, internal plating, etc. and over the top construction will cost you less than a half of this Rolex. You can get a titanium (including bracelet) square G-shock for a 10x less than the Rolex with much clearer display compared to 5610 as a bonus. You need to service the Rolex every 3-5 years to keep at least in the +-2s/day range (sorry 0.5s is not a thing for mechanical watches you actually wear). For that you can buy ~5 of the reviewed g-shocks... G-shock can last a long time... even the cheapest $20 Casios can last decades if a cheap battery does not leak. And there is no other service than battery / o-ring change. If you spent 1/10 of the service fee you need for Rolex to "service" G-shock (replace whatever needs replacing), you would have a watch lasting at least as long as any mechanical watch you can buy... And if you do not keep up with service intervals and do not use an authorized service, you can have a "heirloom" watch with accuracy of $100 Seiko. G-shock has a world time. In the updated version you have 5 with a simple 2-button press switch from any to the main. Updated version also has 3s backlight and both have automatic backlight you can enable. It is clear which watch style you prefer and that you do not care about the features that G-shocks provide over this Rolex. That means that the table with scores is not really useful and describing your feelings is as useful as it gets...

G-shocks are good watch, don't get me wrong. I'm just speaking from personal experiences and what I need in a watch out in the field. From those experiences and good mechanical watch is a better fit for me. I have had 3 G-shocks fail on me while out in the field, never had a Rolex fail. G-shock just are not good in cold weather. I do a lot of snow camping and either the battery dies or the plastic get so brittle that buttons break. Rolex watches only need service every 10 to 12 years to maintain accuracy (again from personal experiences). Also I'm a sentimental guy, love looking at scratches on my watches and reminiscing, knowing I'll be able to pass this watch down to the next generation. The longest I had a G-shock last is 2 years. Again G-shocks are great watches and I will always have on in my collection, its just not my go to tool watch.

I owned seiko, they are just as durable as rolex but i am sure if you drop seiko or rolex from 20 metars high you will cry as hell, g-shocks will survive, as a matter of fact I am planning to buy my first G-Shock next year from MTG series. I know, it sounds stupid to spend 1200 dollars on a quarz watch and maybe sake of would be better as well as Swiss alternative, I see G-Shock is a perfect companion for me, the wonderfull value just because of the fact they don't have to be treated like a baby but more like a tool watch which in first place it is. 2nd reason is, solar power and accuracy( you don't have to worry if you lose 30 or 20 seconds because it is on monthly basis northern daily basis, and the solar power battery gives it just as much longevity as eny mechanical watch). You can buy 3 high end g-shocks for under 3 grand( mtg 3000, mudmaster 3000 and dressy casioak in rosegold). With that said, I still love mechanical watches especially grandseiko and longines flagship, Great video! P. S. G-shocks have a wonderful story enzyme share your know it, so well not as important in horology they have a wonderful story about young man who broke his gifted watch and then create the toughest brand in the world.

Thank you for your comment : I very much enjoy a Seiko, great watches for there price point. That being said, I do believe a Rolex is far more durable than a Seiko. Rolex will last many many decades if you take care of it and it should for the price you are paying, A Seiko (from personal experience) will last 7 to 10 years, again, great for that price point. I feel the same about G-shock watches, great watches for there price point. But I'm a sentimental guy and when I buy a watch that I'm going to travel and have adventures with I want that watch to last a very long time. I see myself in 40 years sitting down and reminiscing about all those amazing times each time I put on that Rolex watch. Again G-Shock great for the price point, but (from personal experience) I only get 3 to 4 years out of my G-shocks and also I can't really wear G-shocks while snow camping or being in cold temps for an extended period of time. (see my latest video for more in-depth about that ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-edZicgKknVw.html ). Yes a G-Shock would survive a 20 meter drop, but if you are falling 20 meters, you like your mechanical watch are dead. Just my personal thoughts and felling on watches, thank you for sharing yours.

I think what you said was very reasonable and honest. People can get very snobby with watches, but you didn't come across that way at all. What you said made perfect sense and I agree. The people with the silly comments are probably just angry they can't afford a rolex. I can't afford it either. Even if I could afford to throw away 10-15 grand on a watch, I'm not sure I would do it. It's primarily a status thing. The status of Rolex is what makes the watch, not so much the functionality. The 10k is for the name. The Casio-Oak GA-2100 with a custom steel case could maybe fill in the gaps a little better for overall use at a great price.. but still... doesn't have the status and luxury.

Bro I own Rolex and G - Shocks, I love Casio as much as the next guy, but don't underestimate the toughness of the Rolex, especially this one - Explorer II or the Submariner. The thing is, the other more luxurious watches tried to add them toolish looks, while the Rolex already are tools and not from yesterday, the only got dressed up trying to keep up with the other blingies, but if they need to go trough serious business - they can. Full metal G - yes you might pass down, but the resin one - not sure how time will fair when the resin rot decides to set in. The other brand I might consider that is worth it is Omega. With the G-shock, you can set the backlight to turn on automagically, but it'll only stay on for either 1 or 3 seconds. Also, re: the battery dying, leaving the atomic clock sync polling will give the battery a beating. I turn mine off after I get the RCVD notification, then maybe switch it on again for a sync after say another month, then switch it off again. That's the main reason you'll run out of battery. Since turning the sync off mine's not run out again (I had run it down to zero prior, when I'd left atomic clock sync on)

Also to I didn't like the idea of the bracelet costing more than the actual time keeping part of the watch. G-shocks just work better and are more purposeful with the rubber strap. I think.

I don't like mechanical, analogue watches. That pretty much cuts out Rolex and the rest of the European watch industry.

I have to use mechanical watches since I do a lot of snow camping and anything with a battery usually fails in the sub-zero temps. Mechanical watches charge by your motion and don't depend on any electronics or batteries. A lot better fit for me.

G-Shocks last decades. This is totally silly. Obviously resin might need to be replaced but the module is good for decades. The G-Shock will withstand so much more abuse than the rolex.
@cheynewalls

I like G-shocks, and they are great in a lot of circumstances, but from personal experiences with wearing them out in the field, G-shocks last about 3 or 4 years. And that is fine for that price point. A G-shock will withstand some abuses better than a Rolex, but check out my upcoming video on Friday. Did a head to head cold test with my G-shock and Rolex watches, the G-shock does not fair well.

Thumbs down. It's an uninformed comparison. And there is not really even an excuse. You don't even need to read the manual. There are great videos online explaining the watch in detail. Like the 20 minute video from Watch Geek. That g-shock will give you a decade of life easily. Not four or five years. I know I've had a g-shock for that long ...often in harsher conditions that would have destroyed that Rolex. Also, the cost to replace one is just a fraction of the cost to service your Rolex. Not to mention you put yourself at risk with Rolex because it invites theft. What would the cost be if either watch got stolen or crushed? The lume on your rolex is only good if you are lucky enough to get a good charge ahead of time. The g-shock has auto illumination that lights up with no button press when you turn your wrist. Also you can change the light up from one second to three on the new GWM5610u version. I don't even know how you got the old version. And some g-shocks have longer illumination and even analogue hands with lume too. You complain about the buttons. But to see the time you never need the buttons. Also, there are similar g-shocks with bigger buttons. The g-shock charges in a day or two and will last without light for like 9 or 10 month easy. I doubt your story about it dying on you. Wearing a sleeve is fine as long as you give it light every half year or so. And indoor light counts too. Obviously, you don't take the g-shock to formal events. It's so cheap, you can have both watches and wear each in the appropriate conditions. The best reason you gave for the Rolex is that it gives you confidence and higher status. That's all the justification you need. Heck even if you just liked the looks more that's a valid reason. But it doesn't justify the false representation of the g-shock. Personally, if I was you, I'd keep both watch. I'd use the g-shock when things could get hairy with risk of the watch being stolen or destroyed. I'd use the Rolex everywhere else. Don't see the benefit of risking $10,000 in dangerous situations myself
@cheynewalls

Wow a lot here, So yes I keep both watches and enjoy wearing both watches. Now for the rest of this, I'm just speaking from personal experience. Not sure about a G-shock lasting a decade, maybe if you wear during "normal everyday activates". But being out in the field and spending the majority of my time in harsher conditions I go through a G-shock about every 2 to 3 years. And that was fine, like you mentioned for that price. Why I had to stop using G-shocks in the field was because not so much of the watch, but because of the battery. During any extended periods of time in sub-zero temps the battery in the G-shocks would go flat. Rendering the watch useless, Therefor moving to mechanical watches to solve that problem. Also solving the problem of broken buttons and cracks on G-shocks, their cases don't like sub-zero temps and the plastic gets very brittle. As for you mentioned my Rolex watches being stolen, again I'm spending the majority of my time out in the middle of nowhere, not in cities so it is not a problem, and if something where to happen all my watches are under my photography insurance. As for your claim of false representation, again I'm just speaking personal experience. G-shock watches are great watches for a lot of things, they just aren't for what I need them for. The backlight on the G-shocks don't work for me, 3 seconds just isn't enough when I'm doing long camera exposures. Lume is better for me because it is always on. The lume on my Rolex Explorer II lasts for about 30 hours, if it does need a quick charge, 5 seconds with a flash light or headlight give it hours of lume. That is just more practical for me. All and all, I will always have a G-shock in my watch collection, but a Rolex tool watch is just a better fit for me and my needs when I'm out in the field doing my photography (like mentioned in this video). I have been depending on wrist watches for over 20 years and I have owned over 50 watches, from personal experience of breaking about 30 of those watches, Rolex makes a very durable and reliably time piece. Also I'm a sentimental guy, knowing that I can hand down my Rolex watches down to the next generation is important me, sharing all the adventures that watch has had. Hopefully inspiring the new owner of the watch to get out and travel.

@@TheLegendaryLP Well, the whole reason I went to mechanical watches is because my G-shock batteries keep going flat when I would be out snow camping. @@TheLegendaryLP Gshocks are good watches for certain things. You are NOT going to be able to pass them down from generation to generation.
