Takes me back - as an apprentice back in the 60's , we had one day and one night each week at college . We made hold downs/clamps/third hands so that by the end of the apprenticeship , you had a fair set of tools ,013 one old timer told me to make em dog rough - that way no one would steal em cos they wouldn't want to admit to making em LOL - trouble with that was you couldn't take em out of college if they were rough . There was no fancy stuff back then , and everything was done with 6013 .

Works only if your clamp is FORGED STEEL. If your clamp is cast iron, the weld will be brittle and the clamp won't be able to withstand much clamping force. I'm also not a big fan of tacking onto your welding table. What you can do INSTEAD is clamp or bolt a larger "sacrificial" 3/8" or 1/4" thick plate onto your table and then tack weld a clamp like this onto your sacrifical plate. This is how you do it if you don't have an expensive fireball tool fixture table or platen table that's designed to accept clamps into various slots. Honestly it's better to invest in one of those tables as soon as your funds allows....because not only do they make workholding easier, they also make setting up jigs easier and more repeatable. Tacking directly onto your weld table over years will result in many high/low spots, which will eventually throw off some of your projects from being square

Hmmmm, a slight mod - JB Weld a strong magnet to the plate you welded to the clamp to make it more portable? Your thoughts?
@mcfwelding
@mcfwelding 2 года назад
could work, could not, probably be ok just to hold something down but not good for something that needs to be really tight

We call those a "half clamp", a "weld dog" uses wedges.

We have the same thing but on steroids. Instead of tacking a little piece of metal on the bottom of the c-clamp weld on a piece of 4x6x⅜ and have the 6" going long ways. Then you only have to do a little ½-1" weld on the front of the plate where you weld it to your work. It gives you a hell of a lot more leverage when working with bigger plate. And for the one with the nut on the end, if you want to be able to lay down some somewhat thick plate. Throw the nut and bolt out the window and make your little clamp thing much bigger (taller/longer) leave the gap between the cut out and what you are working on the same gap, just make the arm stick out about 2-3" and make them from nothing smaller than ⅜" plate up to ¾" plate. Also with that you will want to either buy some steel wedges or make your own out of some 1 ½-2" solid square bar. If you make your own you can make them different lengths and put different angles on them. When you weld these down. Weld it around the front and a little bit on the side where you will be putting the wedge in at. We usually use both of these clamps when we are welding in AR-400 wear plates that are 2'x5'x⅜ thick and they work pretty damn good. I have pictures if you would like to see what I am talking about. Good luck on the job and keep up the good work 🫡 Also, I call the first one a half clamp and the second one a wedge plate.

While I agree with cast being weak, works well with small shit and cheap. Hell, those clamps break on their own in shipping, or when a friend is watching.
