5000 characters isn't enough to tell you the whole back story of what I went through to arrive at this moment, but it's been an 8 year journey of immense commitment, persistence and determination.
I flew from Gatwick to Norway the day before, which I vlogged here: • I bought a Cessna 180 ...
This flight was the first day of a 1 week trip to Norway to get familiar with the plane, the airspace, the countryside, the terrain, the procedures, the lack of fuel availability in the wilderness and most of all a first-hand experience of the exponentially-different effects of density altitude when taking off from water.
It was a day of adventure, new friends, new places and challenges, in other words a truly great day.
I hope you enjoy watching it even fractionally as much as I enjoyed it.
Fly safely everyone!

Episode 6: Flying the seaplane over a glacier • Glacier in a Seaplane ...
Episode 7: The long trip home, starting with a seaplane flight • Final day of seaplane ...
The plane is a 1950s Cessna 180 which has spent it's entire life in Scandinavia. It was delivered brand new to a seaplane charter company in the 50s and has spent its entire life flying in salt water, which is not ideal! But it's been well maintained by the previous owner of 20 years, and with the 6 of us who own it now, we hope to get it new paint, floats and avionics before long.

Awesome content Charlie, Been watching your vid's since this summer. Recently got my PPL (A)(land) and really enjoy watching your adventures, and learning from your 'mishaps'. As for some of your questions in previous videos; Yes, I do enjoy the full length episodes. Like to download them and have them play in the background, whereas I will pay more attention to the short versions. Also your recent, more in depth style of informing the viewer I quite like. 👌 Keep up the good work, and all the best in your preparations for your world tour!

Thank you very much! Congratulations on your PPL, welcome to an amazing club and community. Glad my mistakes are helping others learn as well as me. Great to get the feedback on the long form videos, good to know. Plenty more coming! Fly safe.

Stunning views and great filming. looking forward to the next one. I have the same bluebird print as you, you should get the water speed one too now!

I don't think I've seen the water speed one! Can you point me at it?

Excellent stuff Charlie. I've only flown Seaplanes once, in Canada, 10 years ago. That was 2-up in a 172, without your density altitude problems, and the take-off run was long enough!

I'll never forget my first water landing! Canada is a stunning place to fly floats.

I hear you - there are two additional edits of the same flight that are slowed down, showing more of the scenery, just set to music.

Does it take longer to take off from water compared to when on land? as there's no ground effect....or is that not a thing.
@CharlieLamdin
@CharlieLamdin 2 года назад
Float planes are always a little heavier than their land plane equivalents, but it's so much more variable, as you can nearly always take off directly into wind (if the lake is large enough) and also the water surface conditions affect your takeoff roll. But on average I'd say seaplane take off runs are longer than land plane equivalents. Having said that, I have a friend with a 180 on floats in Maine who can take off crazy short when he's 1 PoB!

2500ft elevation is not totally crazy high. But full fuel plus 3 people plus no wind doesn’t help. Thats for sure. Sounds like this wasn’t really too well thought out… Why did you wait until its almost dark…

We weren't full fuel, in fact fuel was very low. In the video I mentioned that we had planned to leave with only 2 on board, but for some reason the pilot of the 206 left without the passenger he was going to take. Also, the floats on the 180 are sub optimal, PK3500A, very old, with a poor hull design which sticks to water. Great for rough water, terrible for take offs, especially glassy ones!
@timmholzhauer3342

@@CharlieLamdin ah ok. I heard of those floats on a 185 in Poland. Same issues. And yes you mentioned the 3rd person in the Video. I was wondering why you didn’t fly on that beautiful day on that lake instead of hanging around. Which is cool don’t get me wrong but I’d rather be flying my butt off since time around seaplanes is very limited. Although Norway is much closer than Maine…
@CharlieLamdin

Actually that lake was an unscheduled stop off on the way to our intended overnight stopping point in the mountains. I did a LOT of seaplane flying that week, as you'll see in the forthcoming videos!

shame youv'e felt the need to fast forward a lot of footage and the need to commentate. It's good but not quite Aviaiton101, Matt Guthmiller or Angle of Attack.
