My Porsche 993 is what started it all for me. My love for air cooled Porsches. My passion for creating content for the channel. My deep enjoyment of taking my Porsche 993 out for spirited drives along twisty backroads.
If you're looking for a video that highlights the reason to love a stock - or modded - Porsche 993, then this is the right video for you.
Frankly, I've been meaning to do a video about why I love my Porsche 993 for quite some time. My Porsche 993 911 is a special, special car to me and while I have more than 10 reasons I love it, I thought I would trim them down to 10.
Before I got my Porsche 993, it had always been an unattainable bucket list car. But, thanks to careful planning and a little luck I was able to pick up this 1995 Porsche 911 993 Coupe in Polar Silver (6 speed manual). And since I've bought it I've put 10,000+ miles on it and I am now here to share with you the 10 Biggest Reasons I Love My Porsche 993.
Meanwhile, as the title suggests, there is one single thing about my Porsche 993 that has me thinking about selling it.
Watch this video and you'll learn:
- What makes the Porsche 993 so special
- What a Fister Stage 2 exhaust sounds like on a Porsche 993
- Why Bilstein PSS10 coilovers are a non-negotiable modification for any Porsche 993
- What the interior of a Porsche 993 911 looks like
- How much it costs to install Bilstein PSS10's on a 993
- The 2 reasons PSS10's are a game changer for the Porsche 993
- Why a driver quality 993 911 is the most desirable in my opinion
- Why I love my MY02 Wheels (plug and play 18" MY02 Porsche 996 wheels) and my thoughts on comparing them to the Cup 2 wheels that came on the car
- Why, in spite of my love affair with this car, I am thinking of selling it
- How my Porsche 911 993 stacks up against my 2007 Porsche 911 Turbo and my 1986 Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera
- If I did sell my Porsche 993, what Porsche I would buy to replace it

Hey I want to thank you for all the awesome content. Your 993 videos inspired me to fulfill my dream so a couple months ago I picked up a 993 C2S. Arena red over cashmere with sport seats, lsd, and pss10s. Its also a higher mileage (155k!) driver condition car and I love it. I'm gonna do what you're supposed to do with these cars: maintain them well, restore back to their former glory, and drive the hell out of them!

FYI I just purchased a 1998 Carrera S in part because of your channel. I also have a 1989 930 Turbo. If you’re really thinking of selling it, then a a Carrera S or 4S would be the next step. I wouldn’t recommend a 993 Turbo. It’s a totally different driving experience. On the other hand your car is mainly sorted and only has cosmetic issues which are easy to fix. Also, polar silver is a beautiful color and appeals to the masses. You can keep an eye open for any opportunity to get a different 993 and then sell yours (which should be a quick sale given the condition and history) Good Luck !!

@davidmorales2900 Interested in hearing you elaborate more on the 993 non-turbo vs 993 Turbo driving experience. I’m in the market for a 993 and love the Turbo look, but interested in the perspective of someone who has driven both and can speak to meaningful differences/preferences…thanks in advance!

I found myself in the same situation last year. Currently have a1995 C4, Guards Red/Black with 45,000 miles that I love. I lowered it and replaced the disco radio with a Continental that looks period specific. I am attracted to the C2S with the WB and split grill. Found one, drove it and just realized that I have sorted mine out, I know it well after 4 years of ownership and love everything about it. I have a 2018 GT3 Touring which is an incredible car, but still come up with any excuse I can to drive the 993. You will come to the right conclusion, but to me a 993 is timeless.

Polar Silver is absolutely great color. Suits the car perfectly. Black, silver, white, red and all Porsche blues are quite safe bets. The only color I don't really care for 993 is the purple.

Great video, I love many of the same things about my 993 C4S. You may have convinced me to finally get the PSS10s as well. In medicine and surgery, there is a well known phrase that comes up from time to time. Perfect is the enemy of good. That is, sometimes you have already achieved a great outcome, but striving for perfection can sometimes undo that and actually make the final outcome worse. Obviously, this isn’t life or death type stuff, but if you trade “up” for a different 993, you may find yourself knee deep with other gremlins and costly repairs over the years. I’m sure it will have little quirks as well. My PPI estimated a 2k fix.. 8.5k later and 8 weeks later, it was finally ready to go. A “special” spec is going to run you quite a bit as well. But either way, if it really bugs you deep down that your 993 isn’t quite as special as it could be, I’d say go for it. You only live once!

All great points. I think I have $12,000+ into my car above what I paid for the work I’ve had done to it. Just the nature of the beast and doubtless I would go down the same path with a new-to-me car. Thanks for watching and for the advice. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Nice review. The gauges are rotated and not tilted. Tilting would mean the gauges are rotated along the plane axis of the gauges where as rotation would be rotating along an axis that is perpendicular to the face of the gauges. What I love about mine air cooled 911 are the round analog gauges, the size, light weight, the vault like sound of the doors when you shut them and the distinct click when you pull the door latch mechanism. You want a special car - buy a 1993 or 1994 RS America! Guaranteed you won't come across another one anytime soon 👍👍.

As a 993 owner I can only agree with all 10 of your points. Luckily I already have the special 993 you are possibly looking for as mine is a 993 turbo with a Ruf engine and suspension package. The garage where it is serviced love seeing it with road dirt on it as so many of them aren't used other than driving to their annual service. Of all you comments the small size of the car is the one that resonates most. Its about the size of a Cayman but has 490bhp.

My step into the Porsche world was a pure red Cayenne titanium S. A 16 year old girl ran into me totaling my car. The insurance fought me on its value. I loved that car. I now have a pure white Cayenne S. If it's a driver and it's to enjoy on the road it's been my experience to not get a special one. As you said you enjoy it because you can. Loved the video.

Stuck in Canada and the last time I made it down south was for Darin Fister's spritztour show. Thanks for the great video, my first porsche, a 964 c4 arrived in my garage and it was funny to see how easily the car fitted into my little French garage even compared to my VW Golf. The monte carlo rally roads near me are narrow so a big modern porsche feels ungainly even if the power steering comes in handy 🤣

Hello, thank you for this video (I am a little late to the party), Currently I am looking for a "driver" for sure. In the garage waiting for spring is my 87' 928 S4. It is in great shape and I have it just about sorted. However, since I was 14 I have always dreamed of a 911 style Porsche. Sadly, as you know, they have really jumped in price and I am afraid if I do not act in the next year or two, all of them will be out of range for me. Thanks again, you have helped me start my search for my Dream car (I hope the 928 will understand!)

Love your content! I have a Zenith Blue 993 c2 and have also done PSS10, Fister stage 3, Recaro Pole Position seats, BBS e88, 991 Cup steering, Fister SSK/Golden Rod, RS engine mounts, and rear seat delete/carpet fully removed. The driving experience is night and day compared to a stock 993. I don't track my car, but doing these mods really wakes up the car and it's such a blast on the B roads. I would keep your 993 since you've already sorted it out. You can grow your channel by doing a color change/wrap, doing some more mods and weight savings. If you find a more special, garage queen 993, you will have a harder time doing mods to it. Looking forward to your next video. Thanks @911c2

I understand where your minds at. The exterior and just as importantly if not more so, the interior colors were major criteria on the 1987 911 I eventually bought. Mine had been repainted almost immediately after the original owner bought it. It lowered the value ( good for me) and desirability of the car but the colors looked great to me and everything else about the car was perfect ( 35,000 original miles, one owner, almost new interior, no accidents). If I loved the car and didn’t plan on selling it, and considering how customized your car is now, I’d think about repainting it and customizing the interior. I know a lot of Porsche people will think I’m crazy for saying that but you’d have the car of your dreams.

And by the way, I drive the hell out it. I remember when I was just starting my internship I test drove a 1980 911SC. It was two years old and the owner and his wife were expecting their first child. The owner said he needed a “family vehicle”, an excuse back then to admit you were contemplating a minivan, and needed to sell it. I test drove it and felt I had gone to heaven. Oh I wanted this car. However, the logical, non emotional, boring side of me said no, not now. I ended up not purchasing it but the desire to have one someday remained in the back of my mind. Jump ahead about 27 years. The idea of owning a 911 piqued my mind again and I thought I’d better get one while I can still drive it. I found my 1987 Carrera Cabriolet of my dreams. I have no intention or desire of selling it and making a profit. It’s a beauty, gives me a fun safe thrill, and allows me to live my dream.

Hi! My advice is keep it and continue upgrading it to the level it becomes truly special for you. Colorwise - just get it wrapped, it’s fully reversible and sky is a limit. I love mine 993 in aventurine green with black interior and all this together with upgrades makes it special enough. I’ve got daily 996 C4S as well and I’m thinking of wrapping it. Aventurine green - obviously 😏

Being a 964 guy I’m biased to say it is the last of the aircooled. All kidding aside I have a deep appreciation for the 993 and would love to have one someday. You’re like me I purchased my 964 with 197k miles. She is very much a driver. I did rebuild the engine as to a broken headstud(known at purchase) Now she’s sitting at 204k on the chassis and climbing. On to your question. I would just keep what you have and modify it more. Since you love to drive it. Having a special on will make you more apprehensive if there is a scratch or chip. Get new aftermarket wheels, install bumper, may wrap the car. Hell make it an RWB(damn what the purists say). It’s one thing I love about the aircooled is that it’s simple design with a slight twist can change the look dramatically.

There is a reason Patrick Long has a Polar Silver C2 just like your 993. Unless you’re spending $400k on a real 993 RS, there is no purer driver’s car than a NB C2. Also, if it’s been too long since I’ve driven my 993, I’ll run out to the garage just for a few sniffs of that aircooled scent 😂 Love it!

Right on re the 10 reasons. Of the 10, Definitely the smell resonates with me the greatest. Also to car gives off an indescribable aura. Most of the other reason stated I fully agree with and often had the exact same thoughts. Specifically the stance and the air cooled culture. Mine is a black C4S with classic elated grey leather and factory aero kit 11 front and rear spoilers and sills. It is highly optioned with crests in headrests, carbon/aluminum shifter and brake handle, metal sill plates, aluminum gauges, so I’m spoiled. Now when I see a base car it looks off. Colored center crests on the wheels and properly lowered which I agree with again...it’s about the stance. That plus the big reds and wide body puts it over the top for me. So this was spot on assessment of what makes a 993 so special. Mine has some acid rain damage and dulled big reds but with a new clutch, flywheel and top end rebuild it runs like, “Stink”. I keep going back and forth about a high quality glass out repaint, but then I would be afraid to drive her. Might as well live and enjoy, there’s enough stress and worry in this world! There is no substitute!

Great points, great video production, and clear appreciation for 911's! On the overall car size- personally for me 964's up to 992's all seem the same (more) substantially sized to me when I drive them, compared to when I view them from the exterior. All 911's seem to have that same "interior is more substantial-sized than exterior" ratio; which is part of the 911's magic. The 992 is not quite 8" longer and 4" wider than a narrow 964, but they all strike me the same. Otherwise, on the buy/sell of your 993, I would guess you are one-tenth of a percent of 911 owners with such a terrific example. That's unique/special enough for my purposes, but YMMV.
@johnireland1629

I was looking for something a little more high profile, and I'm glad I ended up (based on the quality of the condition) with an artic silver w/ black interior. I have no problem being incognito and having a Porsche that gets overlooked. It doesn't change the driving of it, and it keeps it from being an envy/vandal magnet. I also have some rock chips and parking lot dings and it doesn't bother me at all...I wanted a daily driver that was a Porsche and I could not be happier.

Yes on the smell, compactness of the car and gauges (of course we turn them to best see what we need to see). I would not sell your 993 because of ‘normal’ appearance. I certainly agree that examples that appear close to stock don’t shout “I’m unique”. Within the Porsche DNA there are any number of appearance mods you might consider. You could do side script decals in an accent color (I have gold ‘Carrera’ script to match the Porsche logo and wheel hoops - against a forest green metallic body color). Believe it or not, an after market steering wheel makes quite a statement, as well as a different feel (I have an OMP superleggera wheel). I know you don’t care for rear wings, but I also have an RS America whale tail on mine - it’s not only distinctive on a 964, but also, it harkens back to the G body era without being a contrived back date. Most importantly, you know your car - it’s condition, strengths and weaknesses. Even with extensive maintenance receipts, you would be starting all over again in caring for a car that’s new to you.

Will - once again a great video, keep them coming. I’m having a similar dilemma. My car is a ‘95 C2 coupe 6MT Black/Black. Love the car but also feel it’s very average. I think if you find a more special color combination go for it. The 993’s are amazing and I plan to always have one, but if I could get something a little more special I would go for it. Just make sure whatever you get you still are able to drive it like you stole it.

Another great video, thanks. Seems like the Polar Silver Metallic is a classic Porsche color (silver) in similar manner to Guards Red; but yeah Guards Red is brighter and more iconic. Gotta go with your gut, though -- if you're thinking about selling it in you've already made your choice in some respects. Good luck! Will be interesting to see where this goes.

That's a really cool video, and I fully agree with all your ups and the one down that you mention at the end of the video. I would definitely recommend you to sell it and choose a 993 Carrera 4 which has a bit more prestige. To have a somewhat special model, you could choose a phase 1 that was made in 1994/1995 and develops 272hp has opposed to the 285hp on the later models. However, I am not sure if they are available in your area. Good luck and hopefully you find the right one for you ;)

Nice video, enjoying the content you are producing. I too have a 95 993 that I bought a few years ago because it was Speed Yellow, the color I really wanted, but it also has several things that are not my favorite. On my car I have essentially done a project a year to start working it towards the vision I have for it. My opinion would be to keep the car and work it towards what you want. You then have a car you know and are very connected to, especially if you do some of your own work. The other benefit of doing it that way is that you hire people with very special and increasingly uncommon skills. You have found Sonderworks and they look like a great shop, but they need customers to keep doing the work they are doing and to train other to carry that work on into the future.

KEEP YOUR 993!!! I've owned 4 different period 911s: 964, 997, SC and 993. The 993 was my favorite by far. Not even close. Why would you not consider it special enough? It's a 993! It's inherently special. Just do some of those light cosmetics you were considering, maybe add some custom touches to make it your own. At a 119k miles, you're getting real close to an engine rebuild. Do a rebuild, and then you essentially have a brand new 993 worth about 80K. That'll make it plenty special.

You already have the car and its been sorted, runs great and you know all the ins and outs. To get another one, now your starting from scratch. Ive driven the C4s and the C2s, both seem slower than my ‘96 coupe. I hear its a weight advantage with the same exact HP so the standard carrera is the most pure and spirited. Making it special is done by ones own interpretation, with exhaust, suspension (stance), shifting action, etc (which you’ve done and would do again (lot of money to do again). So get some inspiration to customize from instagram, that’s a great place to start (TONS of content). Go to luftgekühlt and checked it out and other air cooled events for inspiration and make it your own (inside and out), that’s the funnest part of being a porsche owner! I have done a bunch to both of my air cooled (and water cooled stuff too) but the air cooled is the most fun to customize! You’ll know what to do and put your own spin on it, and the car will become even more special and those feelings of getting a different one will turn into keeping it! Then I guess getting another to customize again! It’s a great hobby that you really dont lose money on in the end (not many things in life you can say can do that!). Nice Tudor Black bay BTW! I love my blue Pelagos! You got great taste, I’m excited to see what you do with the ride!

I have a 1995 993 C2 Manual, mine is black over black, so it's a bit like the Batmobile! I fitted the Golden Rod and the RS Short Throw, huge improvement over standard gear linkages. I know what you mean about being a few on the road and not that special. I fitted the 993 RS touring wing, it completely changed the look of the C2 (turbo wing is too big on narrow body). I'm in Sydney where a 993 Turbo is more than double the price of a Carrera and a 993RS is about four times. I've driven both and yes they are better but not by that margin. I also have a MGA, MGB GT V8 and a 240Z and am thinking about a 997 GT3 of Turbo, first world problems lol.

I’d wrap it in a different colour so you can experience a difference! That’s cheaper than selling the car you love and if you like the new colour you could have it repainted. I’ve repainted a few of my cars mainly to get away from boring colours like black or grey. I prefer blue. Doing a wrap is cheap and quicker. Saves on all the hassle in selling your car. I dislike dark interiors. So on my recently acquired Ferrari I had a trim shop replace a dark brown cloth headlining in a light cream leather shade. This simple mod has transformed the car’s interior. Cheaper than swapping cars!

I would install 2 lightweight bucket seats, M002 RS Aerokit plus some minor RS mods, the car would become very precious, and you will discover how beautiful polar silver is, especially coupled with black interiors. Polar with black interiors declined in a sportier way is never going to be annoying and will be same time so sporty.

Agree with everything apart from tilting the clocks but then again i do have a steering wheel which allows me to read the revs and a Digital readout for the speed, not that that is always completely applicable! As far as saying that the polar silver with the black interior is not that special, with respect it's absolutely the most classic and my personal favourite.

Fully sorted driver 993 you love! you could sell it and spend twice as much for a 2S, that drives much the same as the car you already have, same power, your suspension sorted, exhaust you love! I suggest you get turbo brakes, and rebuild engine to 3.8. Then get yourself some more stone chips!

One of my good friends bought a 97 C2S from Brumos - Black with Black leather 6 spd, motor sound, turbo twist wheels, whale tail.- he sold it with 18k miles for about 4 k less than he paid off the showroom floor - IMHOthe 993 is the best of them, I drove a 86 for a year or so and the transmissions and clutch difference in the 86 to the 97 is light years apart.

I would think so long as you have a solid engine then it's worth doing all the cosmetic upgrades to bring it up to your personal taste even if that means a respray to a colour of your choice. That way you're holding on to car that you trust its reliability rather than taking a gamble with another used one that may end up giving you mechanical issues. Not unless you favour a lower mileage one hence your thinking towards selling.

A lot depends on how you want to use the 993 and your other cars. Do you use the other cars much or have they become garage queens. The air cooled culture, like you said has a large hot rod contingent. Just you buying the turbo front bumper shows that you would probably enjoy the process of tinkering with your 993. Changing the interior is probably relatively cheap if you do it yourself and your able to sell seats, door cards etc to get the interior you want. Thinking about what mods you can do is only half the fun.

If have the finances to go for a 964 or 993 RS then I might would sell the 993 but I believe other than those two cars, you have the pick of the bunch! The turbo is beautiful but isn’t as pure and also is heavier. The polar silver is cool but a blue or Green would be better IMO! I have a 17 Carrera with the 7spd and I absolutely love it. No where near as analog but great as a daily and for trips with its comfort and technology. Also it rips and with a tune would be ridiculous

I would only hold out for a Carrera S. Otherwise I would keep yours and maybe go partial outlaw...put the turbo front on it, etc. The pail “handle” on the back of the ‘95 has to go. I saw what Magnus did to one...painted it blue, black, yellow, white ...looks a bit clownish to me. The nice thing about the black interior is that it ages well, the grey interior is pretty awful when it gets browned on the edges. Finally, I would consider repainting it if you’re not looking back at it when you walk away. The silver is classic, but you can’t go wrong with “gulf blue”...also known as Carolina blue in your neck of the woods.

Can´t get into the gauge mod. When you´re on it you can tell by the sound, feel and circumstance when it´s time to shift. You´d only be looking at gauges on a straightaway with no danger involved. As to the speedo, you only look at that if you´re worried about the limit near speed traps. Any other time, you know when you´re speeding. 😃

I had more or less the same with an outlawed 964C4. Manual, sport seats, no sunroof, low miles, everything working great on the car, original paint, FVD LB2-300 race tune, 100-cell sport cat, Cup-pipe, PSS-10, RS clutch and LWFW, RUF pedals, wheels and steering. All lights inside out swapped for LED’s. Super planted, raw power and visceral as hell. Then what? Sold it..... Now 8 911’s later I drive a Taycan😬

Do not sell the car--this is the one you went for--appreciate it. Drive it and you can fix the paint and seal issues in 2-3 years if it still bothers you. If you fix the paint now and then continue to drive it a lot, it will only be a matter of time until you have to fix it. These cars are meant to be driven and also meant to be appreciated. Since your goal is to get a 911 of each generation (which I think is an awesome goal), make sure to pick the right one of the specific generation, and then once you put work into it, don't have it be a mistake like the 07 Turbo, where you ultimately realize it wasn't the one. Definitely just keep the car, you'll find issues with another 964. Easy to get into the habit of getting a car, and then seeing a better example online for sale that you had the money for, prior to doing the initial purchase, and then you wish you had that one. Appreciate the car for what it is, they've all got their own character, so unless you have an issue with the character of this one, which your whole video suggests you don't, why swap it for another 964? I'm pretty sure when Magnus buys Porsches, he #1 buys them cheap, and #2 keeps them--there are much fewer that he sold, and there's generally a very specific reason that he did sell, rather than opt to make that particular model the kind of car he wanted. I think this is a really important recipe for being a happy collector.
