If your Charizard: > is a fire type > has 78/84/78/109/85/100 stat spread > isn't Pokemon's favourite , then that is not a Charizard, that's a Typhlosion.
nah, the others were already in the game in whole groups, we just couldn't use them until the raids released them (or HOME support dropped, whichever came first), but charizard was there and not the other two.
@@Iris_Descentin SwSh yes, but in SV it was only Charizard before the Indigo Disc. I actually never thought GF would break up a starter trio, and Blastoise and Venusaur would be able to sneak in on the Charizard love every game, but GF did it in SV.

Now to remind people that the one time they gave Typhlosion some attention by giving it a new form, they gave it Frisk while introducing open team sheets for VGC, as well as it being the only one of the 3 Hisuian starters to not have its hidden ability affect its signature move.
And yet he still sees a little bit of play in competitive. That's my boy. Defying all odds to come out on top once more. NEVER STOP BELIEVING TYPHLOBROS!!!
The Charizard bias is starting to get ridiculous. They put him into Scarlet and Violet not only as the first seven star raid, but the other two Kanto starters were just flat out missing and weren't in the game until DLC part two. AND in the documentary about Heath, a Charmander can be seen with the expedition team.
Not really.... You realize he's a fan favorite and the only hate he gets is solely due to how popular he is.... Which is a s***** reason to kind of hate on a pokémon..... A note that he was only attitude Scarlett and Violet after an update and wasn't actually in the game..... And they put other starters to without their full lineup.... Charizard wasn't the only one......
@@TheDeathmailYou're absolutely wrong. Charizard isn't hated because it's popular, Charizard is hated because of how much gamefreak tries to force feed us Charizard content. Why is the ace of the 8th generation champion a Charizard and not any Pokemon from gen 8? Why do they keep mentioning Leon and his Charizard? Because gamefreak wants to keep force feeding us Charizard. It's insane
@@TheDeathmail It's not when he constantly gets shoved in our face. When Mega Evolutions were first announced and Charizard got two but the others didn't really left a bad taste in my mouth. Here we are 10 years later and they're still putting Charizard on a pedestal. I'd be less mad if they at least treated all 3 Kanto starters equally, then it just becomes a gen 1 bias issue which is better imo, but they don't. He'll always be the more popular of the three, there's no need to give Charizard more things.
@@TheDeathmailLiterally look at its design and concept and compare it to other Pokémon designs and concepts. It's pretty much one of the least interesting ones like WOW a most generic looking dragon with its tail on fire that is so much cooler than a reptilian with a plant on it back or a turtle with two cannon on it back or a fantasy mimic but since treasure chest in Pokémon is pokeball it mimics into pokeball instead
Basically, yeah, kind of. Except that Charizard has actually been good in both the video games and tcg in more recent years (arguably less so in the tcg, I know it's gotten some good cards more recently, but most of them before the 2 mentioned in this video have been mediocre to just plainly bad). Blue Eyes, on the other hand, apart from winning worlds one year, has generally been bad, at least if you try to make it the centerpiece of your deck, as being a level 8 vanilla monster (which takes 2 tributes to normal summon, and you can only perform one normal summon a turn without some kind of effect, making it EXTREMELY HEAVILY reliant on other card effects to help it to hit the field with anything remotely resembling consistency) makes it a bottom-tier card, even as far back as when it was first printed at the beginning of Yugioh's lifespan, I don't care if it has 3000 attack points, it's too hard to bring out! That said, Blue Eyes has seen some success being used with other decks that take advantage of it being a normal monster, such as Heiratics (of which have effects that are centered around supporting dragon type normal monsters) or Trade In to use it as discard fodder to draw 2 more cards. As popular as Blue Eyes is, it simply hasn't seen the same kind of success as Charizard has, unfortunately, and that's even with it having it's own archetype (and a pretty large one that keeps getting new support every few years or so) to help back it up
@@matthewkuscienko4616 The difference is that Yu-Gi-Oh! is a TCG first and makes most of its money from said TCG. TCGs are basically just legally distinct gambling, so they have a reason to keep pushing their mascot (even if they refuse to make it good, for some reason). Pokemon is a brand with a plethora of income sources that don't need mascots for support, and even for the ones that do, they already have an even more recognizable mascot in Pikachu. The Charizard favoritism is just pointless and probably misguided. I know there are a lot of people who think gen 1 was the best due to nostalgia, but those people probably either A. Think gen 1 was the only good one, so they aren't interested enough in the franchise anymore to buy product, regardless of what's in it, or B. Keep up with the franchise a bit, and will probably buy new products anyway regardless of what's in them. Neither of these types of people require the pushing of an iconic mascot. I could be totally wrong, but I also doubt that sacrificing creative design space for nostalgia pandering is strictly good for the franchise.
@@matthewkuscienko4616Bro Blue Eye won worlds in 2016 and has been good ever since. Its a rank 8 MACHINE and is mixable in so many decks as an engine The "New" Blue Eyes support with Jet Plane and that new Lord of D card makes Blue eyes incredibly consistent with crazy disruption and protection. I got to #6 in the world with Blue Eyes and Frogs on the Switch version Yugioh Link Evolution so i have a soft spot for them! Dont diss the Blue Eyes nah!
I think it's also important to point out that charizard is Leon's ace and signature partner, when the champion usually shows off a pokemon from their generation. It was also the first of the Kanto starters to get in gen 8, and the first tera raid event in 9. And in the anime's champion event, it was the ace of 3 characters.
Literally the only other time a champions ace wasn't from their debut generation other than Leon was Diantha with Gardevoir, and that was to show off mega evolution because they didn't give it to any Gen 6 Pokemon (also stupid but I digress). Even if they didn't want to make a new G-max form, Corviknight was right there, and the only one who uses it is Hop in the postgame, which could have easily been substituted for a dmax starter (if we can't give it the Gmax from the DLC)
i honestly think i'd like charizard quite a bit more if it wasn't so overused by the pokemon company i also feel like this is a pretty common belief overall
I think this really started to get crazy around Gen 5 and its transition to Gen 6. There was a specific point in time where GameFreak was super "oh no we need to do the thing to keep old heads happy" after vanilla Black/White release that just turned into full on hyper overcorrection resulting in the "Charizard (and Pikachu) everywhere!!!" marketing that was present in the games, media, et al after. Fucking Leon being the champion of a wholly new region of Pokemon undergoing a new generational gimmick phenomenon and being frame one introduced with a new Charizard versus idk something from that actual generation's roster was a really funny moment in time for me who'd been there from the start of the series (though chose Squirtle in Red because Blastoise was so cool to me lol). Charizard hate/commentary is also funny to me because while I personally don't dislike Zard (agree on the overrep sometimes though) it reminds me of how my fire GOAT made itself known by appearing when I had no knowledge it would be in the anime or that new Pokemon was a thing, kicking said Charizard in the face, walking away with the win and saying nothing. Blaziken was that 'mon lmao
@@Yousef77077 I had hope when I saw Alolan Raticate had Hustle but then it didn't get Hone Claws so I didn't even want to use it on my playthrough anymore 💀
Nintendo : You utter fool, here is Primal Charizard X and Y, along with Primal Charizard Z. and as a bonus, we will throw in Mega Charmander and Chameleon as well.
@sintelon I ran Heatran in mix and mega, with a mega Latiasite, giving it the mega stat boost and levitate, and yes that is as broken as you'd think. So probably you're right and just guessed Mega Charizard Z.
Honestly, love Charizard (despite the flaws), the Charmander episode was the first ever episode of Pokemon I ever watched, it was my first starter when everything started back in my Red game. BUT, GF has shoved it down so hard since gen 8 that whenever I see him in any trailer of New games I can't help but roll my Eyes in disbelief. 😅 (Also, great vídeo Girlfriend)
@@ElectricWindGirlFriend That would involve giving it a movepool, and we can't have that. in all seriousness, I would love to see Unown get a Wishi-Washi style Schooling ability.
Charizard bias has been an issue for a long time, but it can be proven as far back as gen 6 with the fact they got 2 Mega Evolutions. Gen 8 just went REALLY hard with it.
It's because it's one of the most popular Pokemon in the entire franchise. The Pokemon Company knows that Charizard has a massive fanbase, especially with kids, so of course they're going to give it special attention to make sure that it stays relevant. Plus, let's not kid ourselves -- it's a dragon, that automatically makes it cool, regardless rather you think it's overrated or not
@@matthewkuscienko4616he's not even in the top 10 as of gen 9 he is overshadowed and no one cares about him anymore so gamefreak should give up already
@@matthewkuscienko4616it's well remembered, cool and nostalgic but newish polls such as the official popularity poll 2021 and big unofficial SV ones and after teal mask both didn't put zard in the top 10 (some in 20 even), it's a great design and iconic but the reason it keeps surviving on the spotlight is because gamefreak keeps forcefeeding us it. Be it mega & gigantamax or it actually being in the game.
I was there before Charizard was great in the actual games. I remember laughter and Stealth Rocks jokes ensuing at the mere mention of the false Dragon. The hidden ability Solar Power was there to tease us. But little did we know the terror it foreshadowed.
They stole roost and defog from it. It do nothing now, as it lost its defensive niche in the lower tiers. This relegates it to only being used on sun teams in the lower tiers
Charizard is THE 7.5/10 pokémon for me. I like it well enough and it's competently designed but I don't feel all that much for it either. Perhaps if they didn't shove it into my face at every possible opportunity I'd like it more. I've always been a Bulbasaur kinda guy (my first starter and I'm usually not very fond of other grass 'mon you can catch early, so I just pick the grass starters now) and the child in me liked the plant/toad/dinosaur and TurtleTank more then the relatively bog-standard dragon design of Charizard. Instead of giving Charizard shiny stuff, how about they buff the other gen1/2 pokémon instead? It sorely needs to happen at this point.
The fucking nerve to give the Gen 8 Champion a CHarizard as his ace Pokemon, it's so lame and screams of insecurity to give him something "popular" The worst part is now because of people being feed up with it Charizard fans have started to say how it's underrated now and it so desperate and pathetic.
No game freak actually HATES charizard for the simple fact they neglected to give him megas for the other 24 letters of the alphabet, seriously only X and Y? Thats paltry, he deserves more!
I don't wanna hit you with the "erm ackshually" type beat, but the gen 3 segment about Charizard is only half true. DrumZard is a very legit set, but it's oficial rise to OU proper (unless i'm mistaken) was due to being a Moltres alternative with different moves. Most notably, Beat Up and Focus Punch to smack Blissey and Tyranitar. Otherwise, top notch stuff. Keep cooking
zards success in adv (and the use that made it OU) doesn’t involve belly drum salac but is rather in that it is faster) if specially weaker until blaze) than moltres with the ability to beat blissey with beat up or focus punch. fire-grass coverage is fantastic in adv
I actually made a presentation on Charizard and presented it to my friends when we hung out a few months ago. Your videos inspired me to do the presentation. it was really fun to delve into the competitive history of Charizard and competitive Pokémon
yeah the more topics i cover the more complex they get cause i don't really have anymore "single pokemon and why its good" video ideas. want to bring it back down, but struggling atm lol
Thank you for mentioning how broken zard ex is in tcg, LOL. It's also worth mentioning that in the tcg it's tera dark type, making it weak to bug (represented as grass), and currently there are no good grass types in the format that can truly take advantage of their 2x damage against it. This is also partially because it has 330hp in the tcg, which is the highest hp of any pokemon in the meta right now
@@kuzweliveordie7it’s not even that it only takes 2 energy to attack, it’s that it accelerates energy STRAIGHT FROM THE DECK as soon as it evolves, AND the attack scales in damage as the game goes on. They seriously decided that the TCG should just become the Charizard game.
I feel like you could make a whole video essay on how overdone Gen I attention is during Gens VI-VIII - Besides Gen III for obvious reasons, Gen I had the most Megas - XY, off the top of my head, had: - Choice of a Kanto starter early on - A Viridian Forest remake - Snorlaxes blocking the road - Alolan forms only being of Kanto 'mons - Gigantamaxes only being for Gen I and the new Gen VIII mons (except for Melmetal and Garbodor weirdly enough) - The weird callbacks like the Kantonian Gym and Nugget Bridge in Alola - LGPE in general - I'm pretty sure I saw clips of Brock and Misty showing up in the anime again during like... Gen VII? - Etc etc etc but yeah... Charizard is *definitely* the poster child of its excess Genuinely sick of both Gen I and Charizard and I grew up on FRLG At least more Gens have been getting some love lately too, like II and V
I like Mega Charizard Y way more than X, so X being in Pokken and Smash makes me sad. The only time I think Y got the spotlight was being on the box art of Super Mystery Dungeon.
Terra-Charizard EX is actually a tier 0 deck in pokemon TGC, meaning you are just disavantaging yourself if you arent playing charizard. The deck is also kinda stupid to play And the deck that has a somewhat good matchup against it get obliterate by any other deck so the meta kinda sucks until pokemon compagny gives some very good grass type card support which hasnt happened in like 10 years.
Always appreciate you acknowledging the tcg when relevant, it’s underrated next to the main series, surprisingly complex, and some mons can really shine there that never could in the main series games(although favorites like charizard will never hurt for good cards). Otherwise great vid as always
I've been playing a lot of ADV OU recently with ZardLoom, so I'm just here to point out that Charizard isn't really OU because of belly drum salac. It's just an absolute boss monster with STAB fire blast, blaze boosts, good resistances, spikes immunity, and coverage to absolutely nuke everything not named Milotic. One of my favorite mons to use genuinely, it's so fun to melt through teams with fire blast or focus punch raw to snipe the Blissey-TTar on the switch.
Elaborating even more on the Pokemon TCG, the dude is Tera Dark which in short: his one weakness is grass and that weakness is covered by Radiant Charizard (both charizards use the same fire type energies therefore are almost always used in the same deck) therefore even strong grass pokemon can't reliably keep him in check. While his base damage does 2 shot everything, his max damage is enough to one shot basically everything viable in the current format making him an incredible come-back card so even if you are "losing" you can reliably turn the game around. He has the second highest base HP in the game (not including abilities, tools, or other ways of increasing hp) and because of his ability, he can get enough energies to throw out his heavy hitting attacks the second he hits the field. A majority of decks in the game are built and centered around hitting specific conditions that allow you to get enough energies to attack and throw out heavy hits consistently, and as fast as possible. The fact that Charizard can both fill the role of getting enough energies and throw out heavy attacks as one card already made him kind of strong on release and he only got better as time went on. TLDR: Charizard in the TCG is fast, is really bulky, and does a lot of damage. There is a good reason why he is the number 1 most popular deck and considered the strongest at the moment.
Listen, I know y'all don't want to hear this, but Charizard is getting 3 more mega evolutions in the next game, plus a stat boost and Nasty Plot. The main NPCs will talk ceaselessly about Charizard and themselves. My dad doesn't work at Nintendo or anything (not since the incident), I'm just making reasonable predictions here.
Honestly as a direct result of its constant attention, overshadowing even its gen 1 contemporaries I already dislike as a result of overexposure, Charizard has unfortunately fallen to being my very least favourite Pokémon. Yes I prefer seeing Feebas. It's annoying to find / hunt but it's also a funny fish. And it's not even Charizard's fault.
It’s also pretty good in GO where it has access to two good fast moves as well as Dragon Claw for baiting and Blast Burn which is actually a good move in GO
I actually hate Charizard since I was a kid. They gave us a dragon that's not actually a dragon, nor did it have dragon stats, but it's definitely a dragon. Then they show so much love to this clearly a dragon but not a dragon over the years, and it's just exhausting. The bias is beyond overwhelming.
I'm convinced that every time TPCI does a poll on who everyone's favorite pokemon is, Charizard only wins because 1 person who REALLY LIKES Charizard, decided to use an IP changer to vote multiple hundreds or thousands of times and spends basically the entire duration of the voting process doing that.
I remember being really mad when Megas were first introduced that Charizard got two forms but Blastoise and Venusaur both only got one. I was super hyped for Blastoise to get a second form that had Drizzle, or for Venusaur to get to set it's own weather and possibly have it's type change off of Poison to something like Steel or Ghost. Their megas seem almost like afterthoughts compared to Charizard. I knew from that moment that Gamefreak was playing favorites instead of building a good meta.
I personally see Mewtwo Y as being originally planned as Mega Mew b4 they realized how bad an idea that was: leaving Charizard as the only mon truly to have 2 megas
The two Megas thing was fine I guess, but the fact that they gave Champion Leon a Charizard as his ace AND he won’t fucking shut up about it is a crime. So many cool Gen8 mons got shafted in favour of aces being reskinned Gen1 pandering (Allister, Bea, Melony…)
When gen 6 hit Showdown I felt like I was the only person using Zard Y in a sea of Zard Xs. I never was a big fan of Zard X, because the flames coming from its mouth always looked like little paper streamers attached to each side of its mouth to me.
I kinda feel like they've retconned the starters into quasi-box art Legendaries for marketing purposes. In that light, treating Charizard as basically a Rayquaza that you can sprinkle into normal characters' teams makes a lot more sense. I mean, Charizard is the only one that's on the box art no matter when or where, in *every* region. His special treatment thus makes meta sense
Zard is the goat and deserves new megas. I want my boy in every game from Gen 10 to gen 20. The Zard is here to stay and he's gonna get some more moves that will take him back to ou
I will always love venusaur, because to me venusaur is exactly the kind of tech-based debuff pokemon i'd want in a starter, and it's also the only generation 1 starter to have a hybrid type from the start(grass/poison). charizard, on the other hand, is pure fire until it hits the final evolution, has barely any debuff moves, and they pretty well only act as an attacker.
Charizard is cool, but I love Charmander and Charmeleon more I would like Zard more if gamefreak gave the same attention to the Bulbasaur and Blastoise line
The bulbasaur line is still my favorite, but I don't dislike charizard they have a pretty cool design. Out of nowhere but I would sell my soul for a new evolution for chimecho.
