Please for the love of god, don’t say that phrase. I get sick of that wolfey guy saying all the time. Congrats dude, you’re good at a game made for kids. There’s no need to get such a massive ego over it.
Thanks for admitting it. I know it's exciting to try to play like a pro, and I'm not saying you can't, just go off and have your own learning experience first. So that the ladder isn't flooded with people who have no idea what they're doing. 😁
I mean, you can’t learn unless you try right? Losing with a good team is valuable for learning since you know it was your play and knowledge rather than your team.
@@DollyBowman When you construct your own team, you have an idea of how you made it. "This Pokemon looks strong, this Pokemon has good moves, I have basic type coverage, and I'm using Loudred because hyper voice is funny." When you use a team that someone else made, especially when you don't know why they made those team building choices but even if you do, you learn nothing.
@@misteral9045Not necessarily, team building is a large roadblock for new players because it takes a lot of game knowledge to know what works. Taking a prebuilt with some additional notes of how the teams works allows the new player to focus on in-game decision-making to enable their known gameplan instead of having to constantly figure out something on the fly. This offloads a lot of the mental overload as a new player and lets them more easily get into playing the game, which lets them build game knowledge and hopefully evolve to modifying or outright building a new team in the future.
@@DragN_H3art What you're saying makes sense, but unfortunately in reality that's just not how it works. Did you even watch the video? That's half the Wolfy effect. Also please see all the comments saying they feel personally attacked for having no clue what they're doing.
Let's not forget that Wolfey's teams are always trying to be leaked, the fact that he is such a scary player and teambuilder while also being such an entertaining poketuber in the competitive scene is something to be admired!
While wolfy has fallen off in terms of skill (not saying he is a bad player or anything. He is crazy good) the reason why he is constantly getting leaked is because his teambuilding is so spectacularly good and creative.
Pokemon is officially balanced around VGC, not singles, I'm not a fan of double battles but I do admit that everything just kinda works "better" than it does in singles.
@@misteral9045 Everyone can keep crying about singles not being balanced all they want. You can make almost anything work in doubles if you try hard enough. I never really thought of it but you are right, everything is much more balanced for VGC.
@@michaeltheaegisThe majority of Pokemon don't stand any chance in VGC due to them having to compete in a single format. But in Smogon at least they have a chance to be played at a lower tier, where a poor Flygon doesn't have to face monsters like Fluttermane.
As a casual pokemon enjoyer myself, I am glad to see another video demonstrate the ElectricWindGirlFriend effect; I click on a new EWGF video, I am entertained for a solid 2 minutes, and I learn something new about Pokemon.
To summarize: Wolfey makes teams that are hard to pilot and are more annoying than overwhelming. He plans 4 turns ahead. Most new players do not plan 4 turns ahead, so the Super Cool Team *tm* Wolfey makes gets curb stomped when piloted by someone who doesnt know what they are doing.
Same, haven't played competitively since Gen 6 and I'm too lazy to get back into it, although I still like spectating matches and watching videos like this
Wolfey actually inspired me to join a tourney for the first time. I ended up going like 2-3, but still it was so fun! I just wish I had the time to do more.
There is also the Jimothy Cool effect for gen 3 OU - whenever he releases a video, I'll see that team / lead pokemon so much more. Makes it easier for me to teambuild when I'm more likely to come against these mons!
i think i lost count to the amount of wolfey teams ive found on 1200ish, and they all leave after i counter the team (mainly bc every stat/move is public), its so fun
You should make a presentation called "A powerpoint on how Wolfey cheated" with a thumbnail of the dream ball raichu. But the twist is that you actually debunk the myth and explain how he's legit and piss off the community of one certain wolflike individual
I completely agree. I love his teams, I love HOW he plays pokemon. But I also recognize that I don't have the world champ diff needed to pilot these teams. I think his perish song team is the perfect example of the Wolfey effect. He accidentally climbs to #1 on SD ladder and has his team stolen, but no one can pilot it so they change the win con and it's still an amazing team! I see this as similar to the Matt Mercer effect in D&D. Matt is great, and he's a great DM in many ways, but you can't put those expectations on others. In both cases, great guys trying to do something unique gets copied, watered down, and repeated enough that it sours the original.
a couple years ago before i got into competitive pokémon i had somehow mixed up wolfey and verlisify and so i went into wolfey’s videos thinking everyone hated him and i was like “man why does everybody hate this guy he seems great”
Here we can easily see the “RU-vid comment” effect, that being if you give a phrase to viewers and tell them NOT to say it they shall most certainly immediately begin typing comments to say it (also ash-greninja video when)
>Has multiple disclaimers saying even if he criticizes Wolfey it's not an attack against him >Proceeds to say nothing negative of Wolfey whatsoever and in fact praises him half the video I find it kinda sad how quick to offend some people are, that RU-vidrs always have to make a pre-emptive defense against themselves because people can take anything and wildly misconstrue it as an attack. In fact I should have even probably prefaced this comment by saying I'm not criticizing this very entertaining video for doing this and am just pointing out how it's a trend because people are so quick to offend.
Wolfey is why I got back into Pokemon. Admittedly exactly because I like jank > normal cores. I'm absolutely not good enough to pilot what Wolfey puts out, but they're super interesting and fun and definitely keep me playing longer than if I tried to play exactly meta all the time. It's also a sign that maybe the most meta thing isn't always the most powerful, just the most consistently playable without wracking your brain with 4D plays with odd Pokemon.
People seem to have a real misunderstanding of what meta is. The meta is simply what gets played the most. Usually it's the most competitive, because the point of the game is to win, but it's also all the gimmicks and memes and anti-meta teams too.
@misteral9045 i think people use meta to mean popular mons while the overall state of the game is also the "meta" but just means what trends are going on. Pokemon lingo is weird overall, team types like stall or hyperoffense are hard pin down, its just word soup.
@@dengar96 I think what you think is stupid, and is copium for what you do yourself. Terms like hyper offense and stall are pretty easy to pin down and understand.
@@misteral9045 well, generally contextually it's used to describe or point to that one thing that wins all the time/is immensely popular because it's strong, but yeah you're right.
This makes sense. Wolfey makes teams for Wolfey and others of his caliber. If you're not at that level, then you're going to do poorly with his teams. He's letting you test drive his racecar, but you don't have his skill or reflexes, so you crash and burn.
I totally agree with this observation. I think Wolfe has shown that you can win with .01% usage pokes, so it can help lead to a broader format where people actually explore other strats. Wish I had the technical skill to pilot off meta teams against meta dominant teams like him tho!
Wolfey is the Mathil of Pokemon. Mathil is a Path of Exile youtuber/streamer who builds off-meta characters that tend to require powerful gear and high skill to see the level of success that he achieves with them; for a long time, his builds neglected player health, making it easy to die frequently if you weren't careful, but because he's one of the most popular content creators for the game, hundred if not thousands of people will flock to any new build he makes chasing the success they see on his screen.
@@NyancyCat His presentation style is extremely mattpat-esque which is a personal thing I just really dislike. Also I think asmongold for wow is similar. I know these sorts of people probably help bring more folks into these fandoms but also I just personally can't stand a lot of these gaming personalities.
I will say, because of you and Wolfey I got into doubles, played gen 9 UU doubles on stadium after building a contrary Serperior team, first game I used trailblaze on the funny grass snake. 10/10 game.
I've noticed it with creators like PokeaimMD, as soon as he's like "this pokemon fell off" that pokemon is all over low ladder with the team he used in the showcase video, without fail
this is absolutely real. i never knew much about competitive pokemon but started watching wolfey vids during sword shield and tried out a rental team myself
I'm one of those casual enjoyers. I've always felt like Wolfey is constantly going "oh no now I lose" to things, so it's good to know that it's because of his team building putting him on that razor's edge
Wolfey’s teams are the biggest double edged sword as a viewer. When his creative strategies work, it makes for some of the best content the competitive scene has to offer. But when it doesn’t work and he keeps trying to make it work despite the scene punishing him for it is extremely frustrating as a long time fan. Though I would never ever tell him that he is playing wrong, you dont become the world champion for nothing after all
He is also a content creator, so he needs to keep his videos entertaining. Fortunately, his efforts really work and his channel is doing really great, having 500k+ views atleast and reaching 1M+ views in many recent videos. Most youtubists just fall down eventually, he is consistent and pushes new content!!
you probably already know but just in case, he did say in his most recent video that this year he was probably going to keep strange mons to just online tournaments for content and not for qualifying tourneys since he felt it held him back a lot last year
@@theKungFuFerret I did not know that! Im glad that he realized it finally. His wacky teams are fun, but sometimes it’s better to dial it back. Hope he goes further this year
ive seen this in other games, be it people seeing a new tf2 video from soundsmith that has a cheesy gimmick and then you see it everywhere for about a week before it dies down, or people playing games for the sake of challenging themselves like the youtubers they love do.
I started watching his stuff in the summer and it got me back into Pokémon. I was flabbergasted by his Toxic Orb Tatsugiri-Dondozo-Costar Flamigo strategy and decided to give Gen 9 a go. I still haven’t actually done any online battles yet though.
Day I don't even know of waiting for the Armarogue and Ceruledge powerpoint. I can attest that watching Wolfey's (And a few other competitive players') videos helped me actually get a massive interest in competitive Pokemon. But I don't just copy/paste their teams in, I never did even when I was starting out fresh. I used others' teams as references for things that worked, things that didn't, and have been making my own teams for the better part of a year with very good success, both on Showdown and the in-game ladder.
I started playing competitive pokemon more or less thanks to wolfey, I really like his content and it has really shown me how to play pokemon, well him and also a friend that I consider to be my Competitive Pokemon teacher. And as a final fun fact, we made a friendly natdex doubles tournament in my school, which I won and I also teached a lot of people about this little hobby that I am obviusly not obesed with and Its not like I do damage calculations In class or something
Wolfe's team gimmicks are amazing and reawakened the spark in me to play Showdown again. Back when I was younger, I used to use offmeta Pokemon with a silly thing in mind, just to do something cool with them.
What's intereasting to me is that, while this phenomenon is present in pretty much any game where you have some kind of loadout or build, the only widely accepted term/name for this I've encountered so far comes from the tcg space: Net-Decking. Guess you could also throw meta-chasing into this category, but that one also exists outside the realm of teams/decks/builds/etc.. I wonder if there's any more out there I haven't found yet.
This kind of effect can also be seen in other game communities, for example in Legends of Runeterra, a card game, when one of the biggest contet creators posts a new deck a lot of people that find the concept fun or strong will try it out too.
My favorite thing about Wolfe is that he will make a team focused on a big flashy idea liek stat copying or perish trap. And then procede to make suxh a ridiculously powerful support core that it ends up being really good- even though in reality, that core could support any win condition. Its so funny. "I started worh Gothitelle and Scream Tail, because they're good tools for perish trap. I then rounded off with the best 4 mon core that you'll see over the next 4 regionals."
It's funny to watch this now that Wolfey is using essentially straight meta teams and storming through regional contests. He was handicapping himself with hyper-complex builds, like giving Tiger Woods wooden clubs. I'll be curious to see how he plays the new regulation going into the summer.
Okay but which do you prefer between his newer scripted/post commentary content or his older, less structured content? Personally, i miss the old stuff
The hilarious thing about this is I’ve been watching competitive Pokémon for a long time, but only the GOOFY parts of it: think Pimpnite, AceTrainerLiam, etc. and MoxieBoosted plus Footoofoo (probably spelling their name wrong) were the ones who brought me into the *actual* competitive scene side of RU-vid. Next came False Swipe and Freezai showing the singles side of things. Only THEN did RU-vid decide to hard push Wolfey’s videos. So this dude was like some Dark Souls boss whispered about in books and hidden corners of videos by these other creators until he just suddenly APPEARED and KEPT APPEARING until I gave in and started watching his content 😆 Can confirm this guy has a style going on, and it brings in a lot of views. Even from people trying to find the smaller creators to watch
There is kind of a singles version of this, on day one of SV, Pokeaim uploaded a team featuring Lokix which got a ton of views. Because of this, Lokix managed to stay in OU for the first tier shift of SV despite not being very good.
Can confirm. Im planing on doing a ribbon master and magmar is a candidate because of on his videos where he build a team around the one imported from xd
When it was still trying to be a competitive game, Legends Of Runeterra had a similar thing with a content creator. I son't remember the guy's name cause he got himself cancelled being a creep or something. It was honestly a healthy thing for the ladder meta
Same goes for blunder/pokeaim and smogon singles, it’s annoying, personally I call it the monoclaw effect because when monoclaw was made as a team style, ALL of mid ladder was using it
A fun thing and observation I've made is that this effect is not just limited to Pokemon. If a comp player of any game really gets a big enough voice, the moment they try something unusual, a bunch of people are gonna flock to it to try and replicate it. It's kinda funny watching herd mentality in real time
Wolfey is the one who got me interested in comp pokemon!! Him talking about teambuilding is what inspired me though so too bad I'm steaming dogwater at doing that
There's a lesser Cybertron effect that happens too. He'll cover a cool new team and then everyone on showdown will show up with the same one, to the point of him running into teams he covers 1-2 videos later fairly frequently.
I enjoy that you made 50% of the video a disclaimer that Wolfey is great and you like him and then described the Wolfey Effect as "people copy Wolfey without being as good as Wolfey". I'm really trying to figure out how to take that negatively lol.
I’m never even played Pokemon VGC, but I think this is a bigger problem than Wolfey or Pokemon VGC. I play multiple card games that have big streamers. Any time a new deck video gets popular, you immediately start seeing it pop up when you’re playing. New combos that weren’t discovered before are being played and entire deck archetypes have been made by content creators. So while I do enjoy your video, it may be a much bigger phenomenon that just doesn’t have a term yet.
you I Wolfey wow believe hate can't Also something that's just occurred to me is that while with most youtubers I have to watch them at like 2x speed to have them be at a tolerable pace, you talk fast enough that I can't understand you past 1.25x. I very much appreciate this.
I saw this a lot on the Gen 3 ou ladder with jimmothy cools videos. I remember he covered a vaporeon team and for like.. a week half the people used it.
I think this applies to ALL poketubers, as any time blunder, aim, emvee, or jimothy use a team (especially in a lower tier), either the team itself or the mon featured shows unusually high usage rates
