Technically, Belly Drum doesnt ignore stat drops - it just raises your Attack by TWELVE stages, which is enough to raise it from -6 to +6. But since a stat maxes out at +6...
@@Dave-og2uiCode digging. Tho there was also a bug in Gen 2 where if u used it while at less than half HP, it would still boost ur attack by 2. The reason that happened is because it works internally by swords dancing 6 times, and it only performs the check to see if it can use the move after the first one.
@@icantthinkofaname4723is it THAT difficult internally to just change the attack stat to +6? I know Pokemon has some shitty code but that's beyond ridiculous
I don't even play competitive, or that much mainline Pokémon anymore. But I still find myself watching these videos because my goodness are they interesting and very entertaining
Fun fact: it was originally planned for Belly Drum to take half of the current mon's health instead of half of the mon's total health (for example, it would lower your health from 75% to 33,5% instead of just taking half of your HP). The reason it was changed is because they realized Snorlax would have been way too broken in Gen 2 (and still was anyways, LOL)
Snorlax would have gone straight into AG cause I don't think neither Mewtwo, Ho Oh or Lugia will defeat a +6 attack Snorlax who only lose half of its current HP.
Belly Drum also fails if used w less than 50% HP, but if you were in Sun/Moon that was also a non-issue because Z-Belly Drum's bonus effect was just a mega heal to full HP before using Drum, thus getting a guaranteed Drum up no matter what. I terrorized people with Z-Normalium Huge Power Azumarill bc it really did just tank everything and then start slapping everyone around
My goofy ahh putting the queenly majesty ability and a salac berry on any random pokemon that learns belly drum and substitute in the AAA metagame be like:
Unburden belly drup Slurpuff was one of my favorite mons back in Gen 6. Bro got aromatherapy, drain punch and play rough. What a guy, I miss him everyday he's not on the switch.
If you think about it, Belly Drum is a lot like actually drums: - Still can go hard alone, but can be tricky to make a whole song work with JUST drums - Shines when it has partners to let it truly shine and rock the room (Note: I have no expertise with drums this is purely observation with no basis in reality)
As a drummer, my perspective is the hardest part is often knowing when to go hard and all out but also know when to not do that. Which sounds like what this risk-reward move is like.
All I need in life is Azumarill @ Sitrus Berry Ability: Huge Power Tera Type: Water EVs: 228 HP / 252 Atk / 28 Def Adamant Nature - Aqua Jet - Liquidation - Play Rough - Belly Drum
Belly drum iron hands with Oranguru as its trick room setter is filthy if you can get away with it. Instruct is a valuable tool for obvious reasons, but Symbiosis is also fantastic utility, because it allows Iron Hands to use a sitrus berry for a better chance at surviving the setup turn and then receive another item from Oranguru, like an iron ball to underspeed other trick room teams or a booster energy to pump its attack even higher. It’s one of my favorite strategies ever.
I'm glad Hold Hands got credit for being cool. Like, they just hold hands for a moment to wholesomely style on the opposing team. "Wrecking you with my soulmate."
in "almost any ability" I usebelly drum snorlax with cheek pouch ability and recycle. Snorlax @ Sitrus Berry Ability: Cheek Pouch Tera Type: Normal EVs: 4 Atk / 252 Def / 252 SpD Impish Nature IVs: 30 HP - Belly Drum - Recycle - Body Slam - Earthquake it is a very fun to use set. recycle+cheek pouch is the closest snorlax has to slack off.
I remember playing a Gen 7 draft league. The team had a mega pidgeot and a Gigalith/Exca Sand core that people overprepped for, So I just brought a ton of pivots (Incineroar/Mesprit/Lanturn IIRC) With the Gen 7 pinch berries, Colbur, Shuca depending on matchup and the star. Sub/Bellydrum/Drain Punch Kommo-O with a Salac. At then end of the Season Kommo-o had the most kills by a huge margin even though in the mid season update draft everybody scrambled for answers. Good times. Can highly recommend.
I fuckin' love this move. Catch me in gen 6 with belly drum unburden slurpuff, or gen 4 with blaze + Salac bellyzard throwing out absolutely nuclear-tier fire punches. It really is just such a fun move when you're able to pull it off properly.
When I used to pkay showdown I loved using this on unburden slurpuff. Bit risky but if it works I have a horrifying physical sweeper who also happens to be a lil fairy named Mister Merengue. That’s what it’s all about.
the move and strategy is super cheap but also always super cool it see. Sure it is an almost instant win button in many cases, but because it is so risky it gets rarely used and as such doesn't overstay its welcome
Belly Drum Charizard is my favorite gen 2 OU team, nothing beats the feeling of slowly spreading para throughout until you whip out the zard at the end and just click earthquake/rock slide until you win
You wanna know what I feel like is the coolest Belly Drum set in competitive history? Gen 8 VGC's Custap Berry G-Max Snorlax! One relatively easy to get Belly Drum and suddenly that Snorlax is firing off +6 Pseudo-Priority G-Max Replenishes like there's no tomorrow, absolutely fucking chunking the enemy team in gloriously brutal fashion!
I love all the big boosting moves, Belly Drum most definitely among them. Really cool to see how its distribution drives it into very different niches based on the user. But Shell Smash will always win out for me, I love to make a Cloyster go Super Saiyan.
Belly Drum Zen Mode Galarian Darmanitan was the absolute GOAT of my mono Ice playthrough of Sword. Belly Drum gets it down to half health and puts it in Zen Mode so it gets the base Attack and Speed boost ON TOP OF the +6 Attack stages. Absolutely shredded through everything, even resists.
Belly drum even has a niche in lc with Cetoddle being a great abuser of bd + ice shard to either delete half the opponent's team if given the opportunity early game, or to clean up late game. It's really fun to watch
Early Gen glitch time: in Generation 2 the check for whether you have enough HP left for a Belly Drum happens after the check to see if your Attack is already maxed out. Except the check for whether your Attack is maxed out is to raise your Attack by +2 and see if it worked. So if you don’t have enough HP for Belly Drum, you still get a Swords Dance off of it in GSC.
I remember in Pokémon Stadium 2 where there was a part that taught you strategies for battling One of those strategies was belly drum, rest, and a berry that cures sleep Made me feel f***ing invincible
Belly drum is one of those moves that remind people that no matter how hard you try to adapt to a “meta”, it doesn’t completely beat pure game knowledge. It’s a strat that will always exist and remind you that you should always have a way to counter proper setup mons.
hello, gamers. today I present to you: slush rush belly drum cetitan. alolan ninetails can set up aurora veil to almost guarrantee a belly drum. i recommend ground tera typing for those nice earthquakes and ice shard as a priority move
To give a sidebar to the sidebar, Gen 2 Marowak also doesn’t need Belly Drum because this is the one generation where it’s OU* and also using Thick Club, AKA Huge Power as an item. That’s why it can reach that overflow state in the first place: Marowak couldn’t reach that number in Gen 1 anyway, before held items. *It’s also UUBL in RSE before falling off a cliff, where it’s still so violently strong that it can wallbreak sometimes without Swords Dance up, but also you could sneeze on it and it’d die
I was trying to have fun in the gen2 ladder other day but some dude baton passed agility to a belly drum whatever and wrecked me (I really don't remember what it was).
Azumaril is my favorite Pokémon of all time, and I was really happy when I found out that it could hang around in OU. I've since been murdurizaing those who don't suspect the happy bun-bun who can one shot god.
long before i ever knew pokemon was played competitively, back around when emerald came out, this move confused me to no end. almost any time an npc used it, they got knocked out before getting to move again. then, a wild hariyama did it in victory road, and sweeped my team. it was a moment that embodied the meme quote, "WHY DO YOU HAVE SO MUCH POWER?"
This is the Linoone comment you were looking for. Silly little guy ends up being one of the most satisfying high-risk high-reward sweepers if you can properly set the stage for Belly Drum into Extremespeed.
Azumaril is one of my absolute favorite mons in the game, so i absolutely love Belly Drum. obvi its a good move in its own right on Azu, but the *fear* of Belly Drum is just as important... I mostly run Choice Band azu, and i love it when people click taunt and then get absolutely blown up by banded Liquidation
When it comes to Bellydrum Poliwrath, there's another move I like to use right after... Baton Pass. Don't get me wrong, I'm not the best competitive player, so I've never made it very far in the rankings. However, I love taking Poliwrath with "Follow Me" Magmar into all viable tiers, especially Uber Doubles. While players are giving my defending Magmar the eye-roll, my Poliwrath Belly Drums, and next turn Baton Passes into Aceus with Extreme Speed, Earthquake, Iron Defense, and Recover. I know I have to be imagining it, but the number of times people immediately surrendered, I could have sworn I somehow heard "$#!*" come through the speakers a few times.
Used Orangur and Snorlax for doubles during gen 7. trickroom and command on oranguru just make Snorlax unstopable. especially if you have telepathy on the ape to protect him from doubble max atk EQ from Snorlax. Good times
