A Quick Fix for "Duck Feet"

Foot turn out or "duck foot", as it is commonly referred to, is often due to under activation of the anterior tibialis muscle, whose "tone" is controlled by a structure in the brain stem called the PMRF. Here's a quick drill to reactivate that muscle and help your brain!

Twenty two years old. Planning on joining the air force within the year and was worried about how my duck feet would affect my fitness journey. I only did this exercise for a minute and there's already have a noticeable improvement. It's still slightly askew but when I work on this like you said I know I'll do better. It's such a simple video but to say it's changed my life is an understatement. Just one exercise in and I feel so much more confidence. Thank you so much for this man.

Yes this works if you do this every day. Its the practice of habit and your body will learn. This has also improved my mile running times to easily under 6 minutes and much squats heavier than 315 as it also helps focus om activated muscles that the duck feet could not do.

First, I recommend playing the video at .75 speed because the gentleman speaks quickly. Great video though… I’m 43 and have always been self-conscious of my legs because my toes point outward. When I would consciously try to force them in… my knees would point inward. even though I live in a hot climate between New Orleans and work in Puerto Rico I have purposely not worn shorts so as not to draw attention to it. After doing this little exercise for the first time my toes are pointing forward. I know this is not a one time fix but I am going to make part of my routine doing the stretch every morning and throughout the day. Thank you.

I tried it a few moments ago, and stood up to check. That muscle seemed to make the foot hurt more when doing the duck foot position, so I tried moving my foot until the pain goes away, and I ended up with my foot facing like a 15 degree angle instead of my usual 30-40 degree. I was amazed by it. You really had to turn on that specific muscle because it was basically asleep and you need to power it up manually to contract and make the foot go straight.

Thank you. Life long distance runner here. I noticed this happening (right foot ducking out) about a year and a half ago. My right foot has "ducked" by approximately 25 degrees - YIKES. It's gotten so bad now that I have two completely different feet and two different legs; two entirely different strides (one for each leg). It has cut my speed to a pep walk simply because my legs/foot plant just don't work in concert. I run 7 days a week (actually about 345 days per year), but my average has drastically declined to 5.5 miles per day. I figured this was it - the point I couldn't continue - which is unthinkable. This gives me some hope. Here goes.

Overall, this is a fine video. I have a bit of advice. You're speaking very quickly, which is common of people who are inexperienced at public speaking. We try to rush through the material to shorten the discomfort. Try to slow down, speak in a more conversational tone. If it helps, remember that some of your audience may not be fully fluent in the language.

I have this, probably been doing it for most of my life. Trying to correct it now, but the hard thing is that while walking it is easy to hold the foot in a straight position when your foot is in front, but when its behind you and you pull it forwards it tends to go out in the wrong position, which is something that it is very hard to notice. It is like the foot is a rubber band that goes out by its self. But working this muscle might help?
@andyclower7732
@andyclower7732 5 лет назад
Hi Marius- This happens because the muscle is weak and it has to turn out so that your toes can clear the ground when you swing your foot through. This is reflexive based on your neurology- it is very hard to change voluntarily. Doing this exercise regularly can help return function to his muscle and strengthen it. It should improve over time. If this has been the case for most of your life, you have also developed structure around it, so it will take time for the tissue to remodel.

is there any information on what seems to be causing this in modern society? it seems to be far more common in the last couple decades and follows along with people who may have poor posture, anterior issues, tight hip mobility ect alot of those things can be traced back to daily habits and positions we find ourselves in just wondering if theres something specific that causes these "duck feet" seems most of us have had them as long as we remember also possible a break down of what consequences they might cause, if there are actually any cases/motions where theyre actually a benefit, and maybe a determination on how much concern should be placed on the condition if we want to call it that, should it be front and center or should more pressing postural matters be taken care of first

There are two ways the foot turn out, one involves these muscles, one involves the hips. Lie down on your back. Let your legs relax and look at your knees. If your knees are turned outward along with your feet, then there is chronic tightness in your hips. If your knees are facing the ceiling but your feet are still turned outward, then the problem lies between your knees and your ankles.

Thanks for tip! are there also stretches to fix this issue or can you only perform this drill to fix duck feet?
@TheFitnessEvolved
@TheFitnessEvolved 7 лет назад
It depends on how long this has been an issue, but in general, muscle activation seems to be much more effective more quickly than stretching. The problem stems from improper muscle firing patterns, which over time create tissue "tightness" and restrictions. Rewiring the muscle firing patterns eventually change the tissue.

WAIT! Why did that work??? Omg I have had turned out feet for ever. I used to be self conscious of it but recently just began to accept it and love myself for it. But I started getting foot issues and hip pains and I’m only in my 20s. So I started wondering if it’s the duck footedness. I’m going to do these all the time and see if it helps!

@@ujjwal4620 Lol I actually focused really hard since seeing this video on fixing my walk and it worked! I still need to kind of actively think about how I walk, but in general it’s become pretty automatic! The hardest part is that when you start walking correctly, you’re using muscles you never had to so I was sore after walking long distances for a looooong time. It’s gotten better recently and if I try to walk the way I used to, I notice my arches hurt and my gait slows down a lot!

I've looked at a few other videos on this, but they were talking about issues I wasn't having. But this one sounds like what my issue is. Edit: Well, either I'm doing it wrong or this isn't my issue after all. I tried feeling for "soft spots" but didn't feel anything of the sort. Even tapped the whole muscle twice saw no results. Did the whole thing again, still no results... 😥

Thanks for this. Every other video on duck feet focuses on arch development, or lack thereof, but I have no problem with my arches. I torqued out my right foot on a sumo deadlift and later that day noticed that my foot was angled out. I've been trying to fix it ever since (been about three months now) with stretches, foam rolling lateral tight muscles that may be pulling my foot outward and even towel under foot exercises. I also pulled my groin not long after that and I'm afraid that possibly made things worse. Any correlation between the two, you think?
@TheFitnessEvolved
@TheFitnessEvolved 8 лет назад
+Fredy B They are probably very likely related. When the anterior tibialis shuts down, you lose dorsiflexion (toes up) when you walk. The foot rotates out and puts new stress on the quads and groin. Try this drill a few times a day and see if it starts to change things. - Andy

Thank you so much for the video and Fredy for his story. I strained my groin the same way pretty much and my foot angled out like a putter! Can already see improvements after doing these for a few minutes!

Hi, we have to do this every day ? How many series/reps ? It is better to do it with resistance band or just like this ? Thank you
@TheFitnessEvolved
@TheFitnessEvolved 7 лет назад
You should probably do this every day to start. Maybe even a few times a day because you are trying to reverse a long standing pattern and get your brain to connect with the muscle to use it appropriately. I recommend doing it without a resistance band and just focusing on feeling each part of the entire muscle activate, again, to improve the brain's connection and control of the muscle. The band tends to "distract" you and you focus on pulling the band instead of finding the muscle.
