REAL, he based it off the age the story was written in where those lessons were placed on kids at the time, a very awesome choice! :] Guillermo wanted to make him different from the story because his child self did not like how Pinocchio just accepted listening to those in power in the end
2022 was the year of Pinocchio. -The Pauly Shore one with that iconic line -The live action Disney remake -Del Toro’s movie from Netflix -And Pinocchio’s appearance in JOJO’s Bizarre Adventure Part 6: Stone Ocean as part of Bohemian Rhapsody (or Bohemian Ecstatic, as the dub calls it)
Lies of P has great character development, but you need to actually do the character side quests. Basically, you didn't get far enough in. The quests are a slow burn that all reach their apex towards the end of the game. A good example are the Venigni and Arlaccino quests.
The Venigni/Arlaccino quest made me despise the king of riddles. Still, I think it fits the theme of puppets gaining humanity, even if some of those aspects are haunting.
Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if Disney had someone leak info about that movie to them, because there's some plot beats between the two that are shickingly similar. Like how in both, there's an original character that communicates to Pinocchio exclusively through puppets.
I mean that’s not really better lmao. The Disney version is better because it shows bad people don’t always face some grand retribution most of the time they get away Scot free and you can’t do anything about it
@@geardog24 Why not? It's a bitter reality that kids would need to face, how they need to be good in spite of, and sometimes even because, this world is unfair and filled with injustice. It's what makes Pinocchio's journey so inpactful, the fact that he rose above the temptation of evil and CHOSE to be good knowing all of this.
@@felixdaniels37 yes Pinocchio chose to be good because he saw the consequences, but that had nothing to do with the villains getting away with it. The Hunchback of Notre Dame taught a better lesson: It’s not the world that’s cruel, just the people in it. So that’s why you have to try and be better.
@@geardog24 People are part of the world though, and the world IS cruel. Even outside of humanity, you don't get locusts and famines and cuckoo birds and cannabalistic animals in a world that's NICE. But that's precisely what makes the actions of good so meaningful. Just like how life has meaning because it's short, good has meaning because it takes so much more than it would to be selfish, or mean, or just plain morally bankrupt. Also Pinocchio chose to be good not only because of how his actions affected him, but how they affected the people he cared about. Gepetto only ended up in the whale to begin with because Pinocchio skipped school. It was only after Pinocchio made the choice to save Gepetto with everything he learned that he became a fully realized person.
I don’t think it's fair to judge Lies of P when you haven't finished it. I was never interested in Soulsbornes before LoP but once I played it I finally saw their charm. In order to truly get immersed into the storyline it's necessary to read through the descriptions of various items. The gist is to figure some things out yourself through those hints; the game treats you like a smart person but at the same time isn't too vague at all. I would say LoP is even more direct with its story than the actual Fromsoftware titles. I wouldn't say that characters are shallow, although I do agree it feels more could have been done with them. But alas, it makes sense that they're not so obviously fleshed out since it's a soulsborne and gameplay takes the predescence over character cast development. Those who bought this game were lured by the gameplay if not trailer itself. In order to learn about characters you must do their quests and if you're on chapter 4, you're not very far in. I think calling Lies of P protagonist simply a Pinocchio twink or a femboy Pinocchio is a huge disservice to him; he is a character as well, but it's not visible at first sight. He grows as the story progresses, depending on how much you lie. He can either remain an obedient puppet on a string who doesn't think for himself or become his own person. His personality shines through dialogues and adnotations from other characters but you're bound to miss it if you simply skip it through or not pay attention. If you lie in your playthrough and do pay attention you will see that he's empathetic, selfless (he lies to bring comfort to others rather than to gain something) and that he likes music (listening to music gives him humanity and the higher humanity is, the better he plays on piano). Lies of P poses the same question as Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio: "What it takes/means to be human". Does it take to be flesh or blood or is it free will that makes a man (BioShock reference, a game that convinced me to finish it through amazing story despite me detesting FPS)? This game has more moral dilemma and philosphy than it looks. I don't want to spoil the game and I cannot recommend it enough. It's truly an experience; while the story is linear, the areas not really explorable and not everybody's cup of tea, it's worth being played at least thrice for every ending. Take it from someone who's on NG5+ :] Otherwise, I enjoyed the video!
I love del toro’s pinnochio. Easily my favorite and great themes of a relationship between a father and a wooden puppet and I love that Pinocchio doesn’t even turn into a real boy in the end because gepetto already sees him as his son. It’s so heartwarming and gets me tearing when pinnochio says “you will be my papa. Will that do?”
Del toro surprised me in good way, I loved how it went crazy with all these ideas and with in ending that was simply beautiful. Lies of P is was one of my favorite souls like of all time. The first song got me hooked to finish the game in 2 sittings, I recommend this game to anyone who wants to play a banger.
Surprisingly enough, Lies of P isn't the first Soulslike with a puppet/automaton as the protagonist. There's Steelrising from... 2022 i believe, set during the French revolution, with an automaton lady named Aegis. I've never played it myself but from what i've seen it was quite alright, creative and had nice music. For reasons of similarity i'd have thought there would be more crossover fan art with Lies of P.
I remember watching the Netflix Pinocchio on Thanksgiving last year. And my expectations were basically "This is gonna be a bad nightmare" to "This was a beautiful tragic nightmare"
fun fact: Russian Pinocchio is actually known as Buratino, and he differs from the Italian version in looks and certain story beats. If you ever see a blonde Pinocchio with a fruity lookin striped hat, its most likely Buratino. not tryin to be an 'erm athcually' guy here, it's just that the original Pinocchio novel has always been my autistic special interest and I love seeing people talk about how batsh1t insane the entire story is-
if you ever see this dumbs and you want more Pinocchio media, you should watch Pinocchio (2002) and Pinocchio 3000 at some point the first one is the best adaptation (that stays close to the source material) because of the sheer fact Pinocchio is played by a fully-grown adult man and the english dubbing actor is for some reason Breckin Meyer. the fact hes played by a dude in his mid-40s with a receding hairline (no hate) just makes it all the more obvious how weird and embarrassing the whole story is, as well as how unlikable of a character Pinocchio truley is. Pinocchio 3000 is just horrendous, some of the worst early 2000's animation with clunky and downright atrocious character designs, a feverdream-like plot, and somehow they got Whoopi Goldberg to voice the d4mn fairy. it's like the american dub of that Doogal movie but worse- Pinocchio (1972) ((Pinocchio 1978 on yt)) is an interesting one too, only because at the 32:16 minute-mark they animated the aftermath of Pinocchio being hanged, legit swining in the wind n all-
I was a security guard in the studio during the production of Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio, you could tell the movie was going to be badass! The animators were all top tier!
If you want to fully understand the story of "Lies of P" without playing the game, there's actually a really good video essay by @Zuldim; where he breaks down the entirety of the game via linking it to the story of Pinocchio. If you have 3 hours to spare, I recommend giving it a watch.
Lies of P has been the only game i was hesitant over (can you blame me? all the other "amazing" souls like games have been mid to horrible) but soon realized after giving it a try that it was, indeed, all that and more
You should talk about Boy Kills World. It’s pretty much this decade’s Scott Pilgrim, in the way that it’s more of a video game than an actual action movie, and it didn’t perform as expected at the box office.
Del Torros was actually really eye catching and had a really good story to it with a bit of scary elements. I love how he added a bit of fear things into that movie so that it could also catch the eyes of adults as well
To me, the live action remake of Pinocchio was undeniably bad as soon as they made Pinnochio sniff horse s**t, like how do you take it seriously as soon as they hit you with the most pointless demeaning thing you can have a main character do? The answer, you don’t and it gets worse written than before that somehow, but not as it because that scene made that movie a complete joke
With how much Disney's Pinocchio remake got censored, I'm surprised they even used the word jackass to begin with during the donkey transformation scene
I think I understand now why I hate the Pinocchio design from the Disney remake. In the original the eyes looked flatter and not carved in, but this was okay because it was 2D animated and not to mention, a very old film where cels were the standard. The new Pinocchio design, remind you with a DISNEY budget, his face looks too flat and his eyes look painted on and when they move, it looks just cheap and uncanny.
Pinocchio has always been a horror movie, if you read between the lines. The entire concept of pleasure island is an allegory, no, flatout an example of child "surprise babysitting." If you just thought of an infamous celebrity who passed, you're basically on the money for what the original story was like.
I know this may sound cliche, but the last part of the vid kind of remindsme of why I love Superman so much and honestly it kind of makes me hopeful for the day that he and other comic chracters become public domain and beforenyone says anything. I think it's fair to assume making horror movies out of newly public domain characters will die pretty soon though to the other "ACKSHYUALLY" -ers pointing out how it's just his Golden age version, you might have a point

Holy shit your take on pleasure island was EXACTLY the problem I had with the remake of Pinocchio. They tried to make Pinocchio go, “oh no I shouldn’t be doing this” and he still becomes a donkey. How the hell does he turn into a jackass if he doesn’t act like one????

The reason theres been a lot of Pinocchio stuff is simple. It went into public domain so literally anyone who wants to can do Pinocchio stuff. Also on top of that the money hungry house of mouse had to make one too in hopes of hindering all others so they can still keep Pinocchio as their brand.
If I had a nickel for every time someone wanted to readapt Pinocchio into a different movie in the same year, I‘d have 4 nickels which isn’t a lot but it’s weird it’s happened 4 times
