Life and death: This short film is my first work of the 2020s, featuring my final work of the 2010s (just the opening footage is not new). Over the past decade, my series titled “A Thousand Wishes” has been like a pulse in my oeuvre. I have written peoples wishes, sent for this series, on fragile glass. The repetitious nature of writing is requisite in this series, the rhythm is like a heartbeat. The cumulative building-up of ‘text-ure’ can feel mesmerising as a mantra. The letter-forms are simple; it is very difficult to directly write on glass with a diamond tip spinning at 60,000 RPM. The more that I write, the less that can be read; most wishes remain secret, personal expressions. This work featured is one I made for myself, as I cannot show others recently commissioned that include personal wishes of the buyers. This one is a kind of a wreath, to commemorate someone who cared, by writing her ever thought-provocative wish once more. The silver nib embedded in the glass layers is a symbolic tribute to creative writing of all kinds, including of wishes written and sent by email. I wrote by hand without nib or ink (just a spinning diamond tip). Our writing will outlive us all, whatever technology or nibs we use.
