A touching surprise for 86-year-old woman who's given away 8,000 homemade teddy bears & 400 quilts

EastIdahoNews.com and Ashley HomeStore are teaming up every week to bring you some good news during Feel Good Friday!
We want to thank people in our community with random acts of kindness and leave you feeling good.
We recently learned about an 86-year-old woman named Phyllis Steen. She has sewn 8,000 teddy bears for children in need and made nearly 400 quilts to be given away. She has two sewing machines (in case one breaks down) and spends her days serving others.
Phyllis is a widow and three of her six children have passed away. Two of her sons died within the past few months. When she's not making quilts or teddy bears, she cooks delicious rolls with homemade strawberry jam (to give away, of course!).
Phyllis has blessed so many lives and we wanted to thank her for Feel Good Friday. Watch the video above to see the surprise!

It was lovely of them to recognize her hard work and giving heart but I wish the check had been larger. Fabric is expensive! In so many of these surprises the amount they give the person is so much more than what Phyllis got.

I can’t believe how little they gave her. The time and effort and cost of material it would cost her to make those blankets, and all she got was $50 for materials and a meals vouchers.... I’m surprised and disappointed. She deserves to never spend money on a meal out ever again. She deserves to never worry about her own monetary situation again.

First of all. I love her name. Secondly, this woman is a true hero in my book. She thinks nothing of herself, only the people who she is sewing her creations for. What an awesome, inspiring woman and she doesn't look anywhere near her age. I believe that's because she is such a caring woman who doesn't want to stop and therefore it keeps her young. OMG! I know for a fact what she does is more work than I could probably do and I’m 60 years old disabled I’m not sad I’m embarrassed at myself for how this woman can’t focus in and not feel pain maybe ? as much IDK but I give her credit for everything she does thank God for women like her I wish I had one of her quilts! This wonderful lady should be a recipient from secret Santa, a nice sewing / embroidery machine . I love the feel good Friday segments and secret Santa segments. Wonderful to see all the good people and what they are doing in your area. Be great to see other areas in this Country do the same.

I’m 33, in the U.K. & I’m disabled & live alone, I’ve always dreamt of having my very own quilt to curl up on the couch with but my hands don’t work like I want them to, & I’d have loved to have purchased a beautiful quilt from Phyllis. I wish someone could help her start up an Etsy shop or something. Even if her quilts or bears were sold for a nominal fee it would be great that she could get some money back to spend on all the supplies. I also think it would allow her to reach more than those in her local community. But judging by what she said about why she does this I don’t think she could be convinced to receive any money for her items and that’s okay. It’s so inspiring to see someone say that it’s really better to give things than to receive them, especially with the current issues going on in this country and the world, this type of “news” is truly refreshing and I wish we had a lot more of it.
