A typical day in the mortuary

Are you dying to know?

In this video Tracy the mortician/embalmer walks us through a typical day, preparing the deceased for their viewings and services, conducting an embalm and keeping stock and paperwork up to date in a busy suburban mortuary. Not all days are the same in this unpredictable job and while this video shows a regular run of the mill day, often you need to be prepared for the unexpected.
We hope our video helped to dispel some fears or misconceptions about what an average day is like behind the mortuary doors.
Til next time,
Take care

I work at a hospital, i was going to clock in at my usual time clock, but there was a huge line. I thought “why the hell are you all waiting here?” and went on to another time clock down a different hallway. As i rounded the corner, i saw the big white box outside the morgue, indicating a deceased patient was being transported inside. I peeked inside the door as i passed, and there were 2 more bodies, on beds, under sheets. I haven’t stopped thinking about it all day. My hat’s off to everyone working in a mortuary/morgue. It’s a job i couldn’t do.

You noticed ❤️ I have a draw full of red hearts all different sizes, so to fit the size of the property I am returning to the family. Little ❤️ for rings and earrings, slightly larger ❤️ for watches and bulker jewellery. I have always done this (don't know if any other Mortician does it or not?) It's my way of telling the family, it's with much love & care I return the property, as I never usually get to meet the family of the deceased person. Thank you for noticing 💚💚

@@Areyoudyingtoknow that's so beautiful, and I'm sure it gives the families comfort. When my mom went into ICU and was put on the ventilator, the nurse put her earrings in a bag for me to take home. I put them in the front pocket of my purse, and that's where they've been ever since. Well, I did move them to my new purse...because I just can't seem to put them away, 4 years later. She never got to come home, so it's my way of carrying that part of her with me, I guess. Or it's just one of my trauma reactions, showing time stood still, and that's part of the Me that still lives at that hospital, waiting for her to get better. Either way.... Sitting in that very hospital not long after she passed with my sister in law (my father had to get a procedure), I showed her the earrings in the bag. A few minutes later, she pulled her mom's keyring out of her purse (who had passed about 7 years prior) and said "I get it." Long winded way of saying that these small things can mean so much. 💜

You're amazing! I know you don't do this for praise. This work looks so physical as well as mental. The care you give is so beautiful. Our family actually has a mortuary we've used since the 60s. Some of the people our family worked with are gone now. Hugo is amazing and been working for Drapers mortuary in Ontario California for some time now and sadly, very familiar with my mom's side of the family. After death care is so important. Since 2019 our family has lost a total of 10 family members. We've been hit hard. That's the way it goes when you have a extremely large family. Entire generations start to pass. 2 of them young. So from my entire heart I thank you for what you do and how you handle all of it.

Just got into the funeral side of the death care business and picked up my first body from the morgue. In a big city. It’s a strange thing going from caring for each one of our decedents as if they were one of our family members to seeing how the big cities have to handle theirs. It’s night and day. I understand that volume lends to a certain disconnect for those within the morgue, but it’s almost as if they are treated like cattle just being ran through as quickly as possible. It’s just the way it is I suppose. It was just surprising to me. And one other question: Do you embalm only for the purposes of transport? And whose casket is that? Or does your office also handle funeral duties? We use air trays for air transport. And cots for ground.
@Areyoudyingtoknow
@Areyoudyingtoknow Год назад
Hi Steve, it's sad to hear that people are been treat like that but I have seen that myself with the bigger funeral home in the city's, I don't know what the answer is, more staff probably but that's not going to happen. We embalm bodies that are to be buried in above ground vaults, on families request, religious reason and if been repatriated to another country. Most of the deceased I care for are not embalmed. Thank you for your question and good luck with the job, take care 😊💚

Love the video!!!! I can’t wait until I start going to funeral director school!! I live in Montana, in the USA, and there is no mortuary school in this state. I will have to move to go to school. Which is great. Question?? Why do you put the head block underneath the head as soon as the body is on the table?
@Areyoudyingtoknow
@Areyoudyingtoknow Год назад
Hi, that's so exciting, it is such a rewarding job and a privilege to look after family loved one 💚 I have been to Montana, many years ago loved it. Ok this will be one of the first things you learn in Mortuary school or at least it should be. The head block is one of the most important piece of equipment in the Mortuary. It's purpose is one to keep the head in a position you can work with, so it doesn't move around. Another most important things is so the head is always elevated and facing up because if the head is flat and falling to one side all the blood and fluids will gather at this point causing postmortem hypostasis (livor mortis or lividity) is classically defined as the intravascular pooling of blood in gravitationally dependent parts of the body after death. However, intense lividity can be associated with small hemorrhages in the skin, so-called postmortem hypostatic hemorrhages (Tardieu spots). This is very difficult to remove from the face if at all, so you end up with one side of the face bright red and tiny dark red spots and the other side clear and natural. Very hard to cosmitise over, given a 2 tone look to the face, it's not good. So always always keep the head elevated and in the middle so the face is looking straight up. Now you can go in armed with that information ☺️ Take care and good luck in your work journey 💚💚

Why is it that you see deceased, embalmed persons in their coffins with these great big wads of cotton erupting from their mouths, nostrils, etc.? Is this a case of the mortuary person not properly sewing the mouths shut or stuffing the cotton so it can’t be seen during the viewing? It just seems like the job wasn’t finished of preparing the body for a viewing …? Jan from Alabama.

Hi, mortuary should not smell only of probably bleach or other disinfectant cleaning agents. Should be kept clean and my mortuary certainly doesn't smell bad. The only time they is a bad smell is if I am working on a badly decomposed body, but once preparation is finished the mortuary is cleaned and back to smelling of cleaning agents. So you should be fine 😊

Very interesting insight. I am curious, hope it does not come off insensitive, is there slow times and peak times of the year? Like is there a time of the year that you usually see a spike in number of bodies
@Areyoudyingtoknow
@Areyoudyingtoknow Год назад
Hi, not insensitive at all. Yes we have peak times, winter is our busiest time (flu season). And unfortunately around September to February we usually see a spike in people dying by suicide 😔 Thank you for your question take care 💚💚

@@Areyoudyingtoknow Wow! That is very interesting/sad about the uptick in suicide from sept to feb. I imagine seasonal depression plays a role? I’d like to look into that more, fascinating. Also, when the body is not in good shape, such as from a car accident for example. How do you work with those bodies?

Hi, we have done videos on traumatic cases before, you may stumble on them sometime. I specialise in reconstruction of the deceased person. So I can re- attach limbs, re-build heads & faces, so family can have their last goodbye because sudden deaths or very traumatic to the family. I know this because it happened to me when my mum was killed, that's why I do this job and specialise in reconstruction. Lots and lots of hours of work but I personally think it worth all the hours to get to say goodbye, I never got that chance 😢 Thank you for your question take care 💚

I refuse to be sealed in a plastic bag like a packaged meal. I want to be put 6 feet under on my land in my country in a pine box by my family. Its a sad thought to think you are treated as nothing more than an item being rushed around by those who couldn't care less about who you were.
@Areyoudyingtoknow
@Areyoudyingtoknow 11 месяцев назад
Hi, I certainly do not treat anyone as trash, that's awful. Always care, respect and dignity and here in the funeral home we do not place you in a sealed bag we remove the body from the bag. The body bags are placed on deceased persons in hospital or coroners, that is they protocol. And after the care I give a person a natural burial can take place as you described, no problem. Thank you for your comments take care.

Actually Tracy, are you concerned about the "alleged" carcenogenic properties of Formaldehyde? Or perhaps that's been disproven since?
@Areyoudyingtoknow
@Areyoudyingtoknow Год назад
Hi, I am not to worried about that as I am always in my full PPE when handing any chemical in the mortuary and work in a well ventilated room. Formaldehyde does have a bad reputation, but the concentration used in the Embalming chemical theses days are much lower than years ago. Of course most house hold cleaning products are carcinogenic and remember formaldehyde is in just about every product we own, such as furniture, carpets, some material the list goes on and on but don't worry the rist to us all is extremely low to nill. We all need formaldehyde 😉 Take good care 💚💚
