Agreed. The song itself is just... soulful. Wonderful work. Its one of those songs that is so put together its hard to believe that a live performance would add anything (other than the cool factor of seeing the artist doing their art live - maybe without the polish of a studio). But not this one. The Secret World tour recording takes this already awesome song and puts this spin on it that makes it in to something... new and special. It takes a soulful, almost intimate love song and transforms it in to a celebration of life and community. Without taking away from the original. Its like being able to experience a single event in history in two parallel universes. Love both recordings. Absolutely recommend experiencing both.
This song means a lot to 80s kids due to the scene in Say Anything, a movie starring John Cusack where he holds up a boom box while playing this song to win back his dream girl! It's iconic, both the song and the scene!
Peter Gabriel should be knighted for his selfless global humanitarian work, let alone his fantastic contributions to music and culture. My favorite artist. Everything he did with Genesis is wonderful. His bio is a fascinating read.
To echo everyone, the Live version of this song from the Secret World Tour is a MUST SEE. I’ve seen it dozens of time and can watch it dozens more. Simply amazing!!
Not many performers deliver live even better than the studio version, but I agree with you about this song from the secret world tour. Just on another level
Need to see the live version of the Secret World tour, actually, you should watch the whole concert. World-class musicians. Incredible! Really worth your time. Other singles, Red Rain, Salisbury Hill. Thank you as always!
I Implore you guys to watch the live version of this from Arica on his world tour. One of the greatest Live performances ever. The song is longer. You’ll never forget it.
@@craigcooper7586 Thanks to all who mentioned this. I hadn't seen the live version so I looked it up and aside from the deep envy I felt for those who were in the audience, I enjoyed it very much.
Peter Gabriel actually said it is a love song but also a song to God. You should definitely see the live version with all the African singers and musicians. It gives me chills.
Song is actually a love letter he wrote to Rebecca de Mornay. She was asked about it several times and basically blew it off since the relationship fizzled… The man writes a amazing song about you and how he fell in love with you and you just go “Meh”.
I have to give a shout out to *Youssou N'Dour* for his backing vocals, which are the main lyrics, sung in his native Wolof His voice brings a tribal feel for sure, but also feels uplifting and spiritual to me
*Live Version - Live Version - Live Version - Live Version - Live Version - Live Version* - There are about ten live versions out there - but there is one - a single version (the 86 tour) - that will give you chills upon chills. Amber will have died and gone to heaven when she hears it.
The live version can be found on the album called “So” and it is 10:39 in length. It is wonderful. The following track is “Biko”, another great listen.
It is a powerful love song. The live version can be found on the album called “So” and it is 10:39 in length. It is wonderful. The following track is “Biko”, another great listen.
The Secret World Live Tour version is a must. It amplifies every emotion Amber mentioned. The whole concert is amazing. Don't Give Up, Shaking the Tree, Come Talk to Me, and The Blood of Eden are also musts from this concert.
The Seccret World version pales compared to the 1986 live version. Nobody can replace Youssou N'Dour, African dancers. The Secret World tour attempted to recreate that - it was a very good performance but nothing close to 1986 version.
@@lavalleecg The Live In Athens that came with the latest edition of So is great. I especially loved the versions of Shock The Monkey and Family Snapshot
Funny story: Back when my husband and I were dating (1996) I asked him what his favorite song is. I believe that you can learn so much about a person through their favorite song. He said "In Your Eyes". Everytime we heard the song I would say "awwww, it's your song & I'd sing it proudly." 25 years later we are driving along & it came on. I smiled at him. He said, Jen, I gotta tell you something. When you asked me that question I couldn't think of anything. My mind was blank & that's the first song that popped in my head. 😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳 WTF y'all? 🤣 It took him 25 years to tell me that. NOW whenever it comes on I lock eyes with him and squint. 😂
Peter Gabriel is a true citizen of the world. He often collaborated with artists from all over the planet. He sang about human rights, native American history, mental issues to name only a few. I'm an atheist but when he sings I feel as if I'm in the heavens because, for lack of better words, it's like my soul is soaring. You should check his song *San Jacinto* , the live version from the *Secret World tour* , you will hear his voice and suffer withdrawal symptoms when it ends. His artistry is unmatched.
Guys, as great as this version is, the live version from The Secret World Tour is one of the most epic live performances you will ever see in your life. You must must must must do that!
I sent y’all either a comment or an email telling you that if you do this song it really should be the live version of him and his band on stage. It’s a way more spiritual type vibe. I can’t explain it you’ll just have to see it for yourself. It’s almost African spiritual. It’ll say “In Your Eyes (Secret World Live). You will love this song and the meaning a WHOLE lot more!
I think if it's your first time ever hearing a song, then go ahead and listen to the album version. That way when you do see the live version, you will have context and you will know how the artist changed or interpreted the song for live performance, and you will enjoy it that much more.
@@Johnny_Socko yup either way. Now that they have heard this version they have to do the live one on stage. It’s a whole other vibe. Just like when they done FFDP and Gone Away, now they should do The Offspring’s Gone Away. Which while at it I’ve been begging for them to react to Jonny Lang and Lie to me to from him. They would love that song.
Now that you’ve heard this tune, you simply MUST add Cameron Crowe’s directorial debut, SAY ANYTHING (1989), to your movie watchlist! This song has a pivotal role in that film’s storyline and is featured in an iconic scene in the movie. Plus it’s just a fantastic film with very well written characters.
The live version of this from his "Secret World Live" tour is even better, you should really do a separate reaction for that one. You will not be disappointed!
The live version is even better. Gabriel is a genius and innovator. Many of the instruments he and his backing band (Tony Levin and David Rhodes) use are very obscure, like the Stick bass. He’s going on tour and coming to the USA this fall. Try listening to Solsbury Hill. His most popular song after In Your Eyes.
I also recommend the live version of this song. If you like this more mellow side of Gabriel, you might want to check out “The Book of Love” or his duet with Kate Bush, “Don’t Give Up”. If ya want something more rocking, go with “Shock the Monkey.”
Back then. Peter Gabriel was adored by his select audience. Same as Moody Blues. And more. They all sent good messages. And now. Their legacy is earned. Peace and love. Stop hatred. Our species needs more. And above al .... make someone smile. Keep diving in guys. Spread the word
One of Peter's best. The live version is unbeFRICKINlievable. Romantic, heartwarming, and hits you right in the feels. I hope you will check out "Shock the Monkey", "Digging in the Dirt", "I Have the Touch", and his duet with Kate Bush, "Don't Give Up". And is it coincidence that you follow up Phil Collins with his former bandmate???
Yeeessssss!!! Can't recommend enough! And strongly recommend the video and not an audio. Kate Bush and him holding each other like it's the end of the world is one of the most beautiful videos I've seen.
the video version is best of them both hugging each other and singing with the added bonus of a total eclipse of the sun going on in the background that most people miss {:-) PAV UK
If you guys loved this, the performance of this song In Peter Gabriel's Secret World Tour will absolutely blow your minds! Simply beautiful and amazing
⚜️ You MUST watch the live version! It will make you dance, it will make you sing, it will make you cry tears of joy, it is one of the single most amazing works of musicianship and art ever! ❤️
Oh wow! I've been blessed to have seen him live several times. And he is coming back on tour. A recommendation for your movie channel is his concert video "Secret World Live". Without a doubt the greatest concert footage ever.
As others have mentioned, this song was used in a pivotal scene from the Cameron Crowe movie Say Anything. This is definately a movie you need to watch for your movie reaction channel. It is one of my favorite movies all time.
One of the most important and influential musicians to come along since the Beatles, Peter Gabriel brought world music and more to the scene. As far back as his 1st album from 1977 and even before that as lead singer for Genesis, Peter's music has been infused with poly-rhythms, lush keyboards, amazing bass lines, deep lyrics, but above all, Gabriel's voice; almost frail and so very human. He sings of things that no one else dares to. Listen to his song "Biko' about the murder of Steve Biko at the hands of the police which began the downfall of apartheid. Listen to "Family Snapshot" where Gabriel sings the song from the standpoint of the sniper who takes out a public figure to show the roots of violence we plant in our children. He is not like other artists in a way because he comes from a time in music where artists had creative control over their music. He doesn't need big hits (though he has many) because he is loved all over the world. He is a big humanitarian, and founder of WOMAD (World Of Music, Art and Dance), The Witness program that put cameras and phones in the hands of the poor to document atrocities being done and lots more. He has written the score for many movies including "The Last Temptation of Christ" which is remarkable. For some other suggestions, check out "Don't Give Up" - a duet with Kate Bush or "Come Talk To Me", "I Love To Be Loved", "Secret World", "More Than This", "The Barry Williams Show" - This man goes back to the 60's so there is alot! Thanks for doing this one!
Incredible song one of my favorite songs ever so glad you’re finally doing this one. It was featured in an iconic scene in a movie called Say Anything with John Cusack .
Echoing what many others have said: You must watch the performance of this from his Secret World Live Tour (1994), which is an amazing celebration with a large ensemble of musicians dancing and performing it. Must watch!!!!
It'd be cool if you guys listen to Solsbury Hill sometime. It's another Peter Gabriel, and it's my favorite song. It's all about being willing to look crazy in the eyes of the world to pursue a very individualized artistic vision. By the way, I really think you two are lovely beyond words. Be well. EDIT: Is it just me, or are Peter Gabriel videos set in the same universe as Bergman's filmography? I feel like I'm watching Persona.
Excellent comment all around - Solsbury Hill will always be my favorite PG song as excellent as this and other works are. But your Persona reference is priceless.
You really should also experience the live version. It is performed by a group of musicians who've mastered its performance. So good. We want to see you seeing it.
