A Way around the VT1100 Fuel Pump problem

just one way around the problem - easier on your stator than a stock pump too.
For background on this one - Dude who owns the bike had bought a Mr Gasket 12S. It was mounted in the stock location but didn't last very long. So I went to NAPA and picked this one up because it was mostly my fault for mounting it on the stock mounting studs. - after I re-attached the airbox the pump rubbed on the swingarm - I had mounted the pump with the airbox loose.. my bad. So this is the solution I came up with -- I know I could have gotten a teensy diaphragm pump but I prefer the steady pressure of a vanes type pump

hey dawino, love your channel man. Keep up the great work. Your videos have saved me tons of money and time so thanks. Wanted to ask a question about my motorcycle. I've got an '86 Yamaha Fazer with a 700cc Gensis motor. It still has the stoke colis on it and was thinking about replacing coils and wanted your opinion as to which one you'd use? Thanks again.

Accel 140408 - you only need one to replace your current pair (it's a single fire not a dual) - with a Yami though ... I'd put a 1.0 ohm ballast resistor on the constant (center post) - will save cooking a 30 year old mitsu box.. Stock Hitachi box I wouldnt worry -- Some reason though the stock mitsubishi boxes will puke if you change ohms this late in the game - but a brand new box will live forever if the coils are added in the first few months... Old box = use that extra ohm ... new box= dont sweat it

I got this same pump after seeing your video and am putting it in the same place. I've got some questions I hope you have time to answer: The connectors that come with this pump, a metal filter for the inlet and a metal connector for the out: They screw in about half way before they're tight. I measured the threads and it appears they're tapered. That's pretty weird. Did you experience the same thing or did you replace the connectors with others? If so, what did you replace them with? The metal filter for the fuel-in side makes the pump just long enough that I have to modify the metal cover over the toolbox in order to accommodate the pump and fuel line. Pretty annoying. Also, your videos are awesome and have been extremely helpful to me while re-building my 96 Honda Shadow VT1100C. Thanks!

dawino.....thanks for the video. My son has a 535cc V-twin Yamaha (1998) with a crap fuel pump that looks very similar to the crap pump you show in your video. His pump randomly shuts off.....I'm sure it's random because we have removed the pump and put 12v to it on the bench and sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. Same with two replacement pumps we bought. Hard to think we have 3 bad pumps but rather than try a 4th instead I want to try an entirely different pump. A couple of questions. 1) The 610-1050 shuts off when it senses back pressure from the needle valves seating, correct? The stock pump has a set of points under a dustcap that shuts off the pump when the needle valves seat; I assume the 610-1050 has an electronic shut-off system instead? 2) And speaking of those points, the dust cap covering also has a rubber hose (vent? vacuum?) and I don't know what it's for. I think I saw the same hose on the cover of the pump you pulled (around 44 seconds on your video). WHAT is that for? Thanks for any help.

My 84 Shadow VT700 fuel pump went out, and i replaced it with a 1.5-4 psi fuel pump(the same one you have in this video, but lower psi) and when connected to an external power supply it runs, but not when i plug it into the original plug. Im pretty sure there is supposed to be a fuse for this somewhere, but i cannot find it. There are some fuses under the light display console, but not for the fuel pump. I cant find it anywhere, is there even a fuse for the fuel pump?

yup that will work - but with a word of warning: it will work as long as you have the CDI ignition and not the early CX style TDI ignition - in the case of the TDI ignition you need to either convert to an ignitech box first or use a pair of revtech 3ohm HO coils (dont have the part number for the coils off the top of my head but any hardley abelson supplier usually has em - the ignitech box usually takes a month to get and is 100x more reliable than stock or PAMCO units)

most likely the pump - you can clean the points in the top of it but it's most likely 30 year old rubber diaphragm inside the pump finally gave up if she's hitting hard - could also be a (completely) clogged fuel filter too

howdy i got a 96 honda shadow ace 1100 pulled the old fuel pump out today gonna pick up that pump you were talking about just curious ifi can cut the wires off the old pump its a two wire bracket and spice it to the new one and just plug it back in or do i just use the positive to one and splice it too one of the two wire of the old one and plug it in thanks

The wires a bit light for my taste .. but yes - it can be done - just go up 5 amps or so on that fuse -- Usually I tap the Aux fuse hole and run a 12ga wire from there

Wish I had seen this video yesterday but oh well, curious how you routed your fuel line? I took the ol one out so was curious if I route the new fuel line down through that tunnel and up to the pump in the tool compartment will I have any problem getting fuel to it? I have no room to run it through the frame and up and over the air filter. Curious what you think. Thanks.

Super late comment I just got my first bike, 1995 vt1000c2 bought it not running and missing all fuel hoses so I have it gravity fed right now from the petcock to carbs with a t fitting and it acts up anything below have a tank due to the insufficient pressure. When I wire this fuel pump since mines missing the fuel pump and I didn’t see the harness for it can I run a power to the battery or tap into another 12v power or fuse for it or does it need a 3rd wire for the ignition pulse on the fuel pump or not, I’m still learning as I work on cars a lot but new to bikes thank you
@dawino6260
@dawino6260 2 года назад
In that case -- and anyway anyway-- skip the stock pump wire -- just run it to anything that is hot only when the key is on and go up 5 amps on that fuse -- also -- C2 you should have a extra/unused aux spot in your fuse block -- 10 minutes of soldering to make it look pro and just use that hole (unless it's already been used for lights which is unfortunately common ... If you dead wire it to the battery, at least put on a switch or quick disconnect so you can shut it off when the bike is off

If I cant do it with a 90 I'll generally rob a spring around the line from around the fuel line on a gsxr or whatever is handy that has one -- Keeps it from vacuum kinking or on output side it keeps the flow up

A web search shows that the Posi-Flo 610-1050 is a Facet fuel pump. For what it's worth, I put a Facet fuel pump on my Honda (Transalp with an Africa Twin fuel tank, so I needed a pump). I initially used a Facet pump that put out 3 - 4.5 PSI, which I found to be too much pressure. My idle worsened and mileage dropped. I changed it out for a Facet 40177, which is rated only 1 - 2 PSI, and it's worked great ever since. I'd recommend the 40177 for any carbureted application. In the Posi-Flo line, the 60304 is rated at 1 - 2 PSI (and a whopping 15 gallons per hour!), the rest are all in the 4+ PSI range..
@dawino6260
@dawino6260 10 лет назад
Depends on the carb really - Generally as long as you stay under 10psi you wont push past a needle valve - if it does it's either an old needle/seat or a float gap isn't quite right ...
@dawino6260
@dawino6260 11 лет назад
I'd put gas in it first (with a way to drain it quickly right there handy) and find the leak before I did much else -- usually on the vt11000's people will tell me "leak" and it turns out to be "stuck needle or bad float" .. but I see a lot of bad lines and every now and again a cracked fuel filter (located under the bike). Yours is 7 years newer than what I'll let in the shop though
@dawino6260
@dawino6260 11 лет назад
on the older ones its right under the bike - I put em on a jack and there it is. I dont work on anything newer than 1990 unless I've known you since I was a kid though so newer may be different

Right now I don't hear anything and the bike starts sometimes, sometimes it doesn't. Accell part number 140403 Kit for 4 cyl motorcycles - you have to make your own bracket - also you have to shield the wires with fireloom ......bout the sme money as replicas when its all said and done ... The difference in ohms between what your ignition box is used to will take out your ignition box in 6 months.. The Accels buy you a couple of years -- and umm... that is an old, not so easy to find box
