PSA 1. Learn the Heimlich manoeuvre 2. Embarrassment from choking is the major reason why people die while choking at restaurants Do not be embarrassed or go off to hide in the bathroom, it’s not worth losing your life over 3. You can do the Heimlich manoeuvre to yourself as a last resort. 4. Be conscious of laughing or inhaling while you’re out eating 5. There may be a sensation of food ‘left stuck’ in your throat once you swallow but this is merely inflammation. It happens when pills go down harshly also.

I had an elderly woman choke on a massive vitamin many years ago on the first day of my new job. Her daughter was there but was just freaking out! I had no clue how to do the Heimlich but I couldn't stand there and watch her die in front of me so I grabbed her from behind made a fist and pulled in and out popped the vitamin! Would you believe I did not even get a thank you! Wow

This is actually something I have dealt with for a while now. It could be a number of things.. firstly, Gerd. Which is pretty much when stomach acid can climb up your throat and can close your throat the slightest bit. You may have an intolerance of some kind and it can trigger Gerd to occur. If not that, you could be having a general allergic reaction to something in your meal. For a long time, I noticed that whenever it would happen to me (I had it REALLY bad for months), I would be eating some form of fructose. So I assumed it was a fructose intolerance. After some more experimenting with my diet, the fructose theory evaporated, as it only started happening with high fibre fruits (bananas, avocado), as opposed to fruits in general. During this time I was simultaneously going to therapy for some help with PTSD. Turns out, I had been triggered for months and my nervous system was reacting to this by being in a state of survival mode. For me, when I am in this state, my throat tightens and my gut starts to become inflamed and reject the food I eat. In the end, the therapy healed my mental health and all of a sudden i never had the throat and stomach issues again, due to no longer being in a heightened state :)

There is a difference between a food bolus (stuck in the esophagus) and choking (stuck in the trachea). If the person can talk and breathe but can't swallow, its a food bolus.

I witnessed someone choke on a piece of sushi when I was in high school. It happened so fast that I was in shock. in hindsight I felt bad I didn't help him more but I was 17 and had no experience with the heimlich. Lasted about 30 seconds, he puked outside the restaurant and then was ok I believe.

This happens to me. 3 er visits. Years of heartburn and acid reflux scarring the lining of esophagus and throat narrow it.. There's a surgery where they widen your esophagus. My mom had the problem as well and did the surgery.. it works wonders.

Also, I like Sizzler!! 😂 It's a decent place to get steak for less than 20 bucks lol. Damn y'all were praising Sizzler until AB choked. Ethan we get it you're rich and would never eat at such a god forsaken place like sizzler. 😬

A year ago some steak got stuck in my esophagus, and I thought I was going to die because I live alone. Eventually, I was able to start breathing, but the steak was still stuck, so every now and then I’d start choking and then throwing up globs of spit. I had to drive myself to the hospital. Turns out acid reflux was a part of why I started choking, so I take a proton pump inhibitor and now I’m fine. I also try to make sure I chew the hell out of my food.

I started choking in my high school giant parking lot in the middle of the day (aka nobody around) and it was the absolute scariest sensation of my life. I fell to my knees and truly thought I was going to die! I tried water too and it wouldn’t go down. Finally I was able to breathe and the relief was so intense. I was looking for anything I could use to do the maneuver on myself but there was nothing

Reminds me when I decided to eat rice and pad Thai together and choked so bad. I’ll never eat 2 carbs at once ever again.

A guy started choking on some steak at my dad’s restaurant once and my dad jumped over the counter to give him the Heimlich (which worked). Restaurants should start teaching basic first aid as a requirement. It’s insane that they didn’t even try to help-nor any of the other people eating there. Wtf is wrong with people.

oooooooh AB probably has the same problem as me. You need to go to a good doctor, I have been taking this medicine for a few months and now I can swallow properly like a normal human should, now I dont need to drink while eating. When I was younger people even doctors just said that im eating too fast or not chewing properly but it turned out my throat was inflamed for like 10 years and I was always telling everyone that my throat feels narrower than it should but everyone thought I was crazy.... so he should probaly check it out the medicine im taking is caldde "Budesonidum"

That happened to me while drinking tho, it happens to me like 1 or twice a year where I drown in 1 sip of apple juice / water/ etc

As a child, i died like almost 4 times, on those hard sucking candies. Once in the car on the highway, and i didnt tap my father on his shoulder so after like a while of chocking, he saw me in the mirror all blue and almost dead, trieing to choke peacefully without notifying him haha. He stopped and we got it out right away haha. Why do kids always choke in peace? Like all the times i choke, i just let it happen or something, like as not to bother my parents and not bother their time 😂

Sizzler closed down in Australia I think. I loved it when I was a child. But I just liked the chicken nuggets and chocolate mousse. I went to Sizzler once as an adult and it was terrible. They had a potato bake and the potato was still raw. It was a buffet in Australia. Though you could order off menu as well.

Well technically the nurse wasn't wrong if there is air still passing your not supposed to di anything (like tapping or hemlock) because it might just move the piece into a worst spot and actually choke you

Irony of the situation is that AB's a Muslimand has studied medicine but doesn't know that the Sahaba/companions of Prophet Muhammad pbuh used to chew a bite of food 30 times which would basically dissolve the food into liquid. It's good for swallowing and digestion.
