Welcome to a little riff on the word 'hygge', my country's most recent and possibly most popular contribution to the world since the Vikings. Also a little bit about how we borrow words from the English language, uninhibitedly. May the 'hygge' be with you.

I so appreciate this explanation! I live in a part of the northern United States where many(most?) of us come from a Scandinavian background. Norwegian and Danish is mine. I also love language and finding out the true meanings of words or where they came from. When you explained using a form of hygge to say goodbye, it sounded like it might be similar to when we say, "Take care!" when we are leaving. I'm so enjoying starting your channel from the beginning. It seems you never went through an "awkward stage" when starting your RU-vid channel. You're a natural at this. Good for you! Thank you for sharing yourself with us. ❤

As an American married and living in Norway, which also has the word hygge and hyggelig... I have wondered about the world's interpretation of hygge a little bit. I think many English speaking people equate it with the word cozy... to be cozy... but I am not sure it is the same, as it also seems to have the element of enjoying the company of others too. And keeping things pleasant and enjoyable, making that effort.... in the relationship between people. This is my understanding, but of course, this is not my mother language, so I may well be wrong or missing nuances. But that is also my point, that hygge is a very nuanced word and somehow the "fire, candles & cocoa" misses a lot of that depth and meaning, in my eyes....even if I myself cannot catch all of the layers of nuance. Language is a fascinating thing and the culture behind the words is also lovely and fascinating. I really enjoyed your explanation of the word and the forms it is used in, in Denmark. Thank you!

I think you’re absolutely right, and I totally agree with you. How interesting that you, as an American, live in Norway. Best wishes to you 💙

Lol, "Dynasty" was also called "Dallas" in Germany 🙂 We call Emil "Michel" (Astrid Lindgren Charakter living in Lönneberga 🙂) Pippi is called Pippi Langstrumpf in Germany. Words are like magic, aren`t they. They are like living "things", that come to life ..... Huggs from Fairy Tale Cottage, Schurwald Forest , Germany.

As Danes we also often use the word hygge to describe when we are doing something alone. As if someone ask us "What are you doing" we answer "Jeg hygger mig med en bog" = " I'm reading a book" in English you would never use the word cozy to describe reading a book.

I love this, and that sweaters, candles and hot chocolate are not required--although still comfy :D
