EuroAsian Bob has knocked it out of the park with this car. He's found a 1996 850 Turbo Volvo with just 15K miles. It's as close to showroom quality as you can get. The CAR WIZARD 🧙‍♂️ is absolutely shocked with the new-car details it still has.

There was a funny story about these in the British touring car championship. Volvo didnt have any sedan bodies ready so they tested a wagon body in the wind tunnel. Turned out it made more downforce than the sedan and could still reach the same weight requirements. Everybody was laughing at the wagon but it quickly became popular until a rule change allowing rear wings made the wagon body downforce advantage obsolete. I love a good sleeper wagon😅
@volvo09

I love older Volvo wagons. I specifically wanted a 240 wagon as my first car, and It was... and I love the 740 and 940 wagons. I love the angles. I want another.

@somdusazerate Год назад
The better story is about why the wing and splitter were allowed for the 95 season and onwards. Alfa Romeo won the 1994 season with Tarquini because unlike the other cars, the 155 TS was homologated with the splitter and spoiler appearing in the cars that were sold acording to homologation rules. What they did was smart, they had the splitter, technically, in the car, but it was pulled all the way back because you wouldn't need that in the road going version. They also had a spoiler that you could put in the boot and not simply use it. The cars they were required to sold technically had these parts so the BTCC Alfa could too, and so they did. That's why they won pretty much all races it entered. But for 1995, the 155 was never on the podium even once. They allowed the splitters and spoilers for all cars so everyone ran them 1995 and onwards. The 850 wagon no longer had the edge, since the wagon shape would not allow for much of a spoiler, at least not the kind that would meet the regulations. So they changed over to the sedan, and over the years they started churning out better and better results but unfortunately for the 850 it never won the championship. The S40 eventually did. While the wagon was a neat car, I had a 850 too, the fact is that it wasn't especially well performing. They did some very smart things with the cylinder head angle and other stuff but ultimately they were too new to the game at that point, the platform was too new and they kind of had to get used to it over the 1994 season. While TWR was a great motor racing name, they were up against the Williams Renault. Back then Williams was hot shit, so nobody could really touch the Laguna. During the 1990-1999 Williams would either be 1st or 2nd in the F1 championship so to bring that kind of know how to BTCC, other teams must of felt hopeless. Regardless the 5 cylinder race engine from the 850 managed to get Volvo the championship in 1998. Even when facing against the giants of the day.
@vandecar15
@vandecar15 Год назад
This is true but you're leaving out the part where Volvo 'interpreted' the rules differently (cheated their asses off) and tuned the engine to make way more power than was legal. Nothing could touch the Volvo on the straights, it would walk cars. They changed the rules soon after. Volvo was having a laugh back in the early 90s.
@fuzzy1dk
@fuzzy1dk Год назад
@@vandecar15 they didn't cheat, they just followed the letter of the rules. The rules said you had to use a production head and weren't allowed to change valve angles, so instead they mounted the production head at an angle, the rules said you weren't allowed to weld on the head so they bolted stuff on instead. It was checked every race and always proved to be within regulations
@TDCflyer
@TDCflyer Год назад
@@vandecar15 aaah, come on, everybody cheated as much as they could and dared. The fact that it was even possible to make these engines churn out that kind of power was testament to the old Volvo doctrine of by principle making everything more durable than anyone else ever did.

@12:40 The rear suspension might not look like much, but it's actually a really sophisticated setup. It was called the "Delta Link" and was a compromise between fully independent rear suspension and a beam. It allowed for passive rear wheel steering which reduced the turning circle and made the 850 quite nimble for the size of car that it was. All front wheel drive 850s, 1st gen S70s and V70s were fitted with this setup. The build quality on these cars is absolutely incredible, I had one from 1995 with just about 250k miles on the clock and the engine was completely leak free. It looks like it still had all the original seals. No structural rust either, the entire subframe didn't even have surface corrosion.

That Turbo 4 Valve 5 Cylinder is just incredible. For my money it is one of the best engines ever. Tremendous response, good mileage, smooth and FAST. And Volvo interiors are really comfortable. This proves keeping your car out of the sun is the best way to preserve it. The same car if left in the elements will have its interior just fall apart as the plastics and adhesives decay. That said it is not rare at all to see a 30 year old Volvo on the road. Just excellent "heirloom" cars. Perfect for a kid's first car. You know it won't break down and will survive an collision. They're boxy but they're safe. Well the old ones. The new ones are quite pretty.

A new young driver should be in the most recent modern car a family can afford. The latest safety technology beats age every time, given the car was built for safety in the first place. British Fifth Gear slammed a small Renault Modus into an old 940 wagon 15 years ago. The Renault won that fight despite facing a Swedish family tank head on. Video on YT is a quite telling story. The worst fear right now would be the Chinesium cars getting international traction. Cheap. Looks modern. Are total junk and absolutely deadly.

@Dennis W yeah I love people like Euroasian Bob and The car wizard who care for cars the right way. Here in Canada nobody gives Jack s*** about taking care of anything. You gotta deal with more expensive car parts and finding out that a part is only shipped to the US. Canada may be nice but automotive necessities here are pretty terrible with more shipping fees and stuff. I’m literally the only person in my whole neighborhood out of like 400 people that even vacuumes their car and rinses the road salt off of it in winter. Then my neighbors, when their car rusts out they wonder “huh wonder why that happened”, all dumb when they’ve seen how I rinse the salt off my car every 2 weeks in winter. I say, do what I do and you’ll save tens of thousands of dollars from buying a new car because it’s somehow it’s “own” fault that it rusts out. My point is, I wish I saw more people take care of their stuff here in Canada.

I had a 96 850 R for many years, its the car responsible for my love-affair with Volvo's and I've never been Volvo-less ever since. Whoever buys this car is getting a gem, 850's are fantastic cars.

What a beautiful car from the end of the golden era of engineering lead manufacturing. I hope this gets a great price and will be respected and treasured by the next owner.

I worked at a Volvo dealership in 1996 as a service porter. We had 850 T-5R wagon service loaner that was super comfortable and pretty quick for something shaped like a brick, it was my #1 pick when I had to pick up a customer or do a parts run

I saw one of these babies in traffic once, on my way back from home (Saratoga, NY), to take a test at my graduate school (NewHaven, CT). Must've been 1996. Traffic was in a standstill north of Hartford. There was a brand new black 960 in the outside lane; with the dealer sticker still glued to the rear passenger window. Amazing car. In any event, I can testify to the crush zones on that car. A Chevy blazer began to coast up on the rear of the Volvo and hit it at about 15-20mph. The collision turned the Volvo into a perfectly square box. Both the rear and the front of the vehicle collapsed, just like in the roof-drop commercial. The lady in the Volvo was not injured, nor the Chevy Blazer, for that matter. However, that Volvo went from a gorgeous sports sedan to a Swedish box in the blink of an eye.

Holy cow. I was so excited to see this video. My first car was my great uncle’s 1997 Volvo 850 GLT with the winter package. It was white just like this with the factory spoiler. The color was a Pearl white and had the lighter interior. The GLTs also had a turbo. This car was seriously a saving grace for Volvo in the 90s. I loved driving it, especially putting it in the sport mode. I loved this car and it got me through high school and my first two years of college. It wasn’t until my neighbor backed into it and it was totaled due to where he hit it in the front. This brought back good memories. I always get excited when I see a T5 or an R, especially in red or yellow.

I own a EU/UK spec 1996 850R auto saloon, it's sitting in my drive. Best car ever. Fast enough, comfy as.. the driver's seat in my volvo is as comfy as anything I have ever sat in and it has multiple adjustments. I drove from the highlands of Scotland to the French Alps and only stopped for the ferry and a coffee or 2. If position 1 you have set gets tiring change to position 2 if that gets un-comfy try pos 3. Just the best car. Mine is black with light tan Alcantara, it just looks and feels like natural soft leather. It doesn't have the original 5 spoke wheels, they were soft as puppy-s§ite and an absolute nightmare in the UK. every bump meant you warped the rims.

I've owned a 94 base model 850 5 spd manual, a 97 850 R, both brand new from the dealer, and finally a 96 base model 850 5 spd manual wagon. The 97 I loved until the wiring on the radiator shorted out and caused a fire the wiped out the entire engine compartment. The 96 I bought with 142k miles and drove it to 406,xxx where it cracked a valve and said no more. It drove but it was time to buy a new car at that point. I loved the 97 the most. Issues with these cars: Rear main leak at 142k on these cars, odometer gear breaks, dash mounts are plastic and break at the first really cold spell after which you have a creaky dash, the 850 R suspension is very stiff, rides like it's on rails but needs taller sidewalls rather than the skinny 17's. Other than that, great cars. Never understood why they put cup holders directly over the top of the door switches. This white pearl 96 is a very nice car.

I have one similar to this, Estate, manual, non turbo. Father bought it new in April 2000. Now on 49986 miles. Very nice but not as nice as this one. Its worth about £2500 in the UK (About $3000?) I guess a US car of the same spec etc would be worth considerably more. Good older cars are creeping up in value here, but nothing like where you are.

Great video Wizard! This brings back a lot of memories. A friend of mine had this car at that time, bought new. It was that color spec in and out it was gorgeous. I don’t remember if it had the wing but if that was spec it would have. I don’t remember the exact year. I especially remember the leather inserts in the door, I was always the passenger, never drove it, sadly. My car of that time wasn’t going to challenge it. I took me til now to have a car that would blow the doors off that but it took me getting a Kia for that to happen. Thanks for the memories!

This was a nostalgia trip for me. My first car ever was a Volvo 850, 1994 model with a 2.4L 144hp engine. It had velour seats instead of leather, and the interior was beige just like this one. It kicked the bucket after 200k miles not long after a timing belt service... Turns out somebody did not replace the tensioner. I still miss that car...

The turbo brick, police over here supposedly loved them, decent amount of power for catching baddies and all the room you need for police equipment. You could sell that car to James May given the perfect original condition it's in, it certainly would stay clean!

We had an 850 Volvo from new, I was involved a heavy motorway tail end collision in the UK, it was a write off. The following day I called the Volvo dealer and cancelled the 150,000 mile service. What a wonderful car, it saved my skin & kept the engine, the radio and the A/C running through out. Next car ... a Volvo S60 D5 !

I owned this exact car but it was black. It has a high pressure turbo, only that year, the next year they switched to the GLT low pressure turbo. I put a straight pipe, and turbo boost controller. It ran amazing at 17-19 lbs of boost on the stock engine with only bolt ons. That car was known in my home town. Once I took my friends to the street races and showed them what it could do the entire city knew me

Car Wizard, you had a volvo guy come in a few years ago and look at one of these on your lift. Volvo 75th anniversary Platinum 850, only sold in 1996. Came with all available options, and a special paint job for that anniversary year only. Pearl over Arctic White base coat. True wood veneer on the dash and center console. In the rear it has Nivomat self-adjusting shocks.
