Thanks to Joyce for donating this fantastic example still in the box. Netbooks were a subject of ridicule years after their release, but they were an important step in the history of mobile computing.

I've admittedly browsed from time to time for an Aspire One. Specifically one of the models with the water drop ripple effect on the top cover. Something about that design along with a model that comes in a blue color really tugs at my desire, design wise. Good to know what lightweight distro to try now whenever I inevitably buy one.

Just fixed my MSI wind u180dx and upgraded it. It has a 64 bit atom processor, and now rocks a stick of 4GB DDR3 that it surprisingly supports despite the 2GB being the advertised limit. It now rocks peppermint 64bit, and I use it for general light tasks I still love the 10.1 inch form factor and it fits nicely in a small vertical messenger bag it's ridiculously portable and a joy to use because of it. Genuinely sad nothing else out there really replaces it today.

Way back in 2013 got this model as a hand-me-down. it is still working now except for the wifi module. I will be buying some parts to refurbish it and keep it alive although I already have a high spec laptop and a PC. Great to watch this video.

I had the very first version of the Asus eeePC as well as the very first version of the Aspire One (model number AOA-150 AFAIR). I had it upgraded to 1.5 GB RAM. Amazingly it only died finally last year.

I have an aspire one ao150 (atom n270) since 2008 and still works it is well used and for basic tasks is acceptable (its dual boot lubuntu & windows 7). After all, these years it has live most of it life in my backpack, I had to replace many thinks like screens, hdds/ssds, rams, keyboards, batteries and even the shell because it started to disintegrate after all this abuse. Τhe good think is that, the machine is reliable and the parts cost next to nothing, I'm happy to say that now is fully serviced in tip top condition (even though I rarely use it). Nice video!

Also remember that Netbooks got popular because they got released right around the 2008 economic downturn, and many users penny-pinched their way into these devices. Even though the iPhone was already out, and Android was about to gain traction, mobile UX was still quite basic on those smartphones. As for the Aspire, as I commented on the Community post: by far the nicest-looking Netbooks were the Aspire Ones. I remember the model that had the bright orange accents on the hinges (ZG5) as being the one I wanted the most. So indeed, Netbooks were products of their time. They were so popular that even Intel pushed their Classroom PC initiative by basing it on this form factor (though the idea was to kill the OLPC initiative), and Lenovo entered the market with its ThinkPad alternatives: the X100/131 and current 11e line-up. Myself, I was impressed and enamored by the Atom SoC, the more I read about it. And the size... This was the best compromise between subnotebooks and the palmtop PCs of ye olde days... Even today I love 10, 11, 12-inch devices, and wish they'd stick around as a niche product instead of only existing as expensive toys the likes of GPDs devices; definitely I have these to blame for my preference towards ultraportable devices.
@LaptopRetrospective
@LaptopRetrospective 3 года назад
Yes, their arrival during the downturn meant it was one of the few devices to do well. Granted it wasn't as bad up here in Canada as other places I wasn't in a position to spend a lot of money as a student.

I never understood how truly limited the netbook was (in today's times) until I took a look at some of the business ultraportables at the time. Something like a Latitude E4200 is a perfect example of this, as it feels that even Windows XP chugs on it with some of the original business suite drivers (like the fingerprint software) no longer working. My model had the "highest" spec of 3GB RAM and a U9600 and snagged it for $15 on ebay. They're just so different and so limited in so many ways.
@LaptopRetrospective
@LaptopRetrospective 3 года назад
Yep, a very simplistic machine with a very narrow use case.
@SweBeach2023

The E4200 was an awesome machine for its time. Tiny footprint, a very low weight even for today, plenty of ports and long lasting battery.

While many claims that netbooks no longer exist, there are still some laptops that can be called a netbook due to the specs/size. Including those that use a celeron/pentium with an EMMC storage. You can try searching around for celeron/pentium laptops especially those which are 11.6 inch
@LaptopRetrospective

I think those are more common in some regions than others. Not really see anything like that around here outside of education customers.
@Kenzo9063

@@LaptopRetrospective even most education customers will not use such products unless its for rather basic uses such as for elementary school kids. It's the same here with the Singapore government. Only those in high school and above will get higher end devices such as the iPad

now netbooks no longer exist for a few reasons. Tablets have taken over the netbook in the ultraportable market Now alot of powerful laptops including the X1 nano and XPS 13 are the same footprint as the netbooks that were available back then. @LaptopRetrospective 3 года назад
Interesting! Didn't consider that would be an issue.
@lmaoroflcopter
@lmaoroflcopter 3 года назад
It's the major issue with these netbooks. The display resolution is rarely supported properly. Even Ubuntu has issues, it's settings menu is bigger than the screen, meaning you can't actually save the settings without blind navigation of buttons using the tab key.
@TrenchReynolds
@TrenchReynolds 3 года назад
@@lmaoroflcopter I'm sure you know this but just in case, in most Linux distros, if you hold alt and drag the window you can raise the window to where you can see the save button.
@lmaoroflcopter
@lmaoroflcopter 3 года назад
@@TrenchReynolds I did, but completely forgot about that tbh :) as whenever I've had that issue I've usually just got so annoyed with it when almost every window requires you either shuffle it or tab about, and if it's a window that grabs the cursor say a game for example, you're out of luck. That I've just tried something else. Peppermint seems to work most of the time though and tbh I am considering running i3wm on it as I really enjoy that window manager which would also give me a few more pixels of usable space.

I've had one of these exact machines sitting around for a long while. Quite frankly I never really liked it. The keyboard is too small, the screen is pretty bad, and even when it was new it was ungodly slow. There was no reason to buy one when cheap used machines could be had with competing battery life, superior keyboards, better screens, and far more power.
