What’s up guys Jeff from Sorta Healthy here! In today’s video we’ll be reviewing the ACSM CPT certification.
How does this ACSM personal training certification compare to other ones such as ACE, NASM, ISSA, and the NSCA?
Does the ACSM certification route teach you useful information?
Spoilers: the ACSM exercise physiologist course was much less helpful than it should have been.
What are our general thoughts on ACSM, the American College Of Sports Medicine?
Ultimately, is this ACSM certified personal trainer route/course worth taking?
We aim to answer those questions as well as many more!

Thank you for sharing. It’s useful content because I’m switching career paths into health and fitness and this information makes it easier. There’s a gym that I’m impressed with that follows old school fitness programs with some impressive trainers. I’m interested to work with them for experience so I met the gym manager today. I have over 20 years of experience but no qualifications. He advised me to take it to the next step by doing the online certification with ACSM. I guess after watching this video, I’ll just do it to impress him and get the job.

ACSM is very outdated but a lot of the information in the course is fine. I would do it to impress the future employer, but I would also try to take the course seriously and learn as much as you can along the way.

Thank you for making this video! I took NASM-CPT exam a while back and I was worried I was missing out on something by not taking the ACSM course, but it seems like that’s not the case. Kind of disappointed ACSM only gets a C. I thought with it being so prestigious they would get an A or B. Anyway, I appreciate the video.

Thanks for the support! The ACSM info is ok and their reputation is good but ya, their course is mediocre at best. NASM is light years ahead in terms of the actual course, presentation, and resources for the average trainer. I still have some issues with NASM too, but ya that’s where things stand right now.

So I just discovered your channel today. I was originally introduced to personal training from a random ISSA advertisement. Your channel has shown me that there’s more options. If you were to start your training program which would you choose.

Hey Jeff. I cant remember what video it was, but you had said if you are a independent personal trainer you should reach out to professionals around you (chiropractors, physical therapist etc.) how do you recommended I go about doing that and what should I say? I thought maybe i should email them? any help would be really appreciated. I have had my own business now for 2 years and am ready for the next step in growing, just want to make sure i do it the right way. Your page is a big part in my success today. Thank you and hope to hear back

You can either email them or walk into local places. I would send something along the lines of this (this is not perfect -definitely edit a bit): “Hey so-and-so, my name is X and I am a personal trainer working ______. I am working to create a referral network of professionals around area that are complimentary to my job as a trainer and thought you might be a good fit of someone to talk to. I would love to set up a time to chat and share more about my business and learn more about yours if that’s something you would be interested in”

It’s only a little bit worse than a lot of the competition and at the end of the day it doesn’t really matter which one you go with. You’ll have no trouble getting a job when you’re done with it and that’s what most important.

Have you reviewed the CSCS certification yet? It's not exactly personal training but is very closely related. Talk about tons of useless statistics and/or formulae!!

Not yet! The CSCS being more advanced and containing things that’s a little beyond what trainers typically do makes sense to me though. That cert is meant for people who have a 4 year degree in a related field, and it’s meant for people who will be working with more advanced clientele. This basic CPT cert containing so much info on things like MET calculations, and so little on things like lifting technique is silly.

Hello Jeff! I am finishing my Exercise Science degree this May 2024. I took courses at college that prepare us for the ACSM certification, but now that I see this video I am unsure what certification to take. I am reviewing information to prepare for the ACSM but I still need to study more, I am planning on taking the exam on June but I need to think well which certification would be better🥲

At the end of the day this certification will get you a job and that’s really what matters. Someone like you, who’s doing college courses, will be successful either way. Pass that ACSM exam and get working! You’ll do great!
