Gaming is incredibly male-dominated for something women take up 50% of, but regardless, men will act like they own the gaming business. It's literally that difficult to get that kind of job as a woman.

Fun fact: a Blizz employee posted today on Twitter that they'd found out several members of the board were essentially bribed into backing Kotick, getting stock worth millions that wouldn't begin paying off until 2022-2025. This gives the board a strong incentive to keep Bobby in charge, lest they lose these Restricted Stock Units before they have time to begin vesting.

Fucking this. This whole thing absolutely stinks, but it's a shame that people seem to think this is some outlier and not the norm in corporate society.
The craziest part is that a lot of stuff like this (sexual-assault, bullying, suicide and even rape) was a very common thing on the ship I was stationed on while in the Navy. Even our chaplin, the religious dude we're suppose to go to about our problems, attempted to kill himself on deployment because word got out that he was sleeping with a much younger and low ranking sailor. In that same week we had 3 other attempts. Not to mention how awful the Navy is for the environment. People would constantly throw trash and 5 gallon buckets of paint overboard, even if we, "disposed of it correctly," they would just condense it and throw it overboard anyways. If jets have to much full before landing on the carrier they have to dump the excess. I just really want to shine some light on how horrible the military can be, because stuff like this can happen in all branches. As someone who served, I don't want to discourage people from enlisting, but I want people to understand to the true nature of some of the people they may encounter. Not to say you'll have the same experience I did, but some (not all) of our military personal are the scum of the earth.
@@Riolupai Everything gets reported through the Navy, which is dumb imo. People can get kicked out for stuff like that but serve no jail time. The incident with our Chaplin was swept under the rug because he was a higher ranking officer and he continued to serve as our Chaplin. The police can't really do anything if we're out at sea either (which is when most of it happens). It's a very flawed and favorable system. Furthermore, anytime I personally heard about the situation was after it was reported, and even then there was over 6000 people on my ship, I doubt I would've known their names. So yes it was reported, but nothing serious (outside of the Navy) happened to anybody.
I've heard this abt the navy, third time this week actually (after hearing murmurs). Their job seems to be protect the abusers, and serve power over justice. It sucks cause I would pick naval over other branches but not going to protect or serve when my chance of being raped goes up like 50x by people who are supposed to be my colleagues (who I trust with my life)....might as well just join a men's prison. It did come out that the Overwatch team didn’t participate in the atrocities that the rest did. Jeff Kaplan poured his life into protecting his team from “corporate bs” and it now makes so much sense why he left. Great man, horrible company.

Former Origin employee in the 90s til a year after it’s purchase by EA in the early 00’s. I was a developer & part time game master for Ultima Online. As a woman, this has been going on far longer than what is coming to light now. I was forced to leave my job as I was constantly touched inappropriately while working. The only female restroom/locker room for changing& personal items was DIRECTLY next to the managers office & found out he secretly recorded all of us for years. Thankfully, a cable installer found the lines & let myself & others know what was going on - with a sign affidavit, Pictures, video, and more. As we sued him civilly & not required to sign an NDA, I am trying to bring this to light. Please look up Simpson v. Davis 2004 CA & State of Cal v. Origin Systems

While other companies may not sexually harass their employees, the gaming industry as a whole is an absolute mess, with people being overworked and underpaid. Almost got a job for a game company in LA County where I would have made 40k a year, which is poverty money there. Thankfully I work as a game designer in Huntsville, AL instead, and make $60k a year. As someone who majored in game development, don’t work in the AAA game industry, folks, or at least tread very carefully. There are way better places to apply your skills.
I highly recommend government contractors. It may not sound like it, but a lot of the software they develop (if they do at all) involves game design principles. They often pay more, are in a more affordable location, and give way more benefits. I work for a contractor in Huntsville, AL and make $60k plus benefits. That’s entry level. Company culture is infinitely better too.
For sure. Although indie companies likely pay less due to their size. The company I almost got the job for was a pretty large and well known indie company, so I doubt smaller ones pay any better.

I've been pirating Activision games for years now, purely because of how expensive the old COD games are. Like seriously, 40 bucks for Black Ops 1 and $15 each for the DLC? An 11 year old game?
Normally, I still would be against this as it is hurting the people that working for him as well. But in this case, it sounds like most of Activision is a cesspool of degenerates so screw it and go crazy.
My dad actually was offered to go work at Blizzard in California as a project manager - he turned it down because it would be a minor pay cut but it would also cost almost double to live in California instead of where we currently live. Glad he avoided all of this drama.

There are still very talented, normal hard working people at both companies. I personally will not buy their games, extra now because of this, but also just because I don’t enjoy them and think they aren’t fun. That doesn’t mean some people don’t find value in them.
At the very least EA screws its employees and customers over with the somewhat logical motive of profit turned up to the abusive extreme. The downfall of video games, at least in their current state, started when he took over as CEO and Blizzard merged with Activision. What was once a "It's done when it's perfect, so be patient and you're gonna have to wait." Turned into a company that is only concerned about profits, and not about making a quality game. Pre 2008 Blizzard would have LAUGHED at anyone suggesting a mobile only Diablo.

It costs them £300million to sack him, so they basically need to keep defending him until he costs them more than that.
