What makes the Yakuza example work well is that they use actors that made their name through films depicting the yakuza culture, so there is a natural connection there for your brain to draw from and thus feels appropriate even if the media they're featuring in is different from their movies.

It's very common tfor US and Uk guys use complex phonems with spanish names and their more simple phonems so they talk like, how we call the here, a guiri cause they have so many british or american accent they sound like they are trying too hard to talk in spanish.

he sees the games as a similar format to movies (just like Kojima), that's why their games are more interactive style and uses A-list actors. honestly though, I don't see the problem in slapping the actor's face, unless of course if the actor is only there for marketing their face and isn't doing anything with performance at all. which is not the case in David Cage's games. (aside from Omnikron and Fahrenheit) everyone of his games has tremendous actors, who have gave some the most genuine performances ever

Yeah, I miss the time when so many game designers didn't feel like the medium was inferior to film and television and that they have something to prove. That's exactly the point. Look at parallels between the two industries: Both are called 'industries' (term that makes it sound like their shit is made on an assembly line) Over enthusiastic about sequels, remakes, reboots, remasters. Focused on the bottom-line instead of quality. Only concerned with making market-research, focus tested to hell and back inoffensive generic franchises.
@800Thekiller
@800Thekiller 7 лет назад
inoffensive coddler Either you have horrible interpretation skills, or you're just being a dumbass. Naughty Dog uses motion capture completely opposite of how Kojima and other AAA developers use it. Naughty Dog hires actual voice actors and uses their motion capture performance to create a character. If you have actually paid attention to the video, Charlie has a problem with Developers building characters around an actor, and that is NOT what Naughty Dog does.
@mphylo2296

See, the problem is that a large number of the developers who promote these practices actually tried to be filmmakers earlier in their lives and didn't make it, so they went off to become video game writers and directors. They're the reason all these games focus so much on garnish.
@TheCyclicGamer

I feel like this is a problem with a ton of modern video games now, they're ashamed of being video games and more want to be movies or shows. The thing is, video games will have something that films and television will never have, and that's interactivity. Films and TV have their stories and experiences pre-defined throughout the whole runtime, the events will always play out the same no matter how many times you reverse the story. But a video game is different, it's not about being told the story, but experiencing a story, as yourself, through the moment to moment gameplay. This is why film/show adaptations of video games tend to suck, you're taking the thing that makes it unique out, it's interactivity. It's not a promotion, it's a reduction. Video games are at their best when they are video games.

ShayMay Hey! nice to see you here. It is already distracting when I am watching a movie and the actor isn't good enough to play a different persona so I only see them as (name your actor here)... so it is even more distracting when it is done in a video game, because it reminds me that for some reason developers forget the GAME portion of the video GAME. Video games are already a very unique medium because of its interactivity so why do people try to make them into movies?

@Arcademan09 7 лет назад
to be fair Kojima always had a weird boner for "real" actors for his projects I think because now he's big enough to run his own studio he doesn't have that wall to stop him from doing what he wants, after all in the original MGS Snake was modeled after a younger Christopher Walken but he was voiced and written well, let's hope that same process went into this game because if we don't get gameplay soon I'm gonna have serious doubts about Kojima...

There's another reason why this is done - it makes facial mocap easier, because morphing between radically different faces (actor vs. avatar) produces artifacts and odd expressions, you have to do clean up. That and also since we're getting to acting-level of expression, we need actual actors, rather than programmers doing the mocap.
@DeadKraken
@DeadKraken 7 лет назад
That is not entirely true. Is it true that using mocap is a much easier(and faster) way to archieve a good and believable animation, but using the mocap animation set on a perfect model of the actor's face or on a character with really different features, it's the same. Look at Metal Gear Solid 5 for example: we have Quiet, who is almost identical to her voice and mocap actress, and Big Boss who doesn't look at all like Sutherland. As long as the character is human, there is no difference in using mocap on a damn portrait of the actor, or on an original face.
@JanPospisilArt
@JanPospisilArt 7 лет назад
"As long as the character is human, there is no difference in using mocap on a damn portrait of the actor, or on an original face." Nonsense. The geometry of the face models is different, so you have to adjust for this in skinning/rigging. That can produce good results, yes, but you do have to account for the differences. (and yes, there is manual clean up even if you're animating the same actor's model, but obviously less so) In your example, I'm fairly sure they didn't straight up use the raw mocap of Sutherland for Big Boss, the difference in their faces has to be considered when you do the face rig and even later when you're going through the raw mocap doing the cleanup. Yes, you can mocap a completely different character, that's why cartoons still use mocap. But you have more stuff to deal with than if the character looks like the person.

What always bugged me about celebrity involvement in games is that most of their performances aren't even memorable. I'm so glad someone said it. Video games have so much freedom that lots of other mediums aren't capable of- making new faces, environments, etc. Why limit yourself by copy-pasting famous actors onto a video game? Granted, Kojima chose two actors that at least appear to be an interesting combination, but I would rather see Kojima use these people to serve as a foundation for what a character should look like. Solid Snake is a perfect example of an iconic, interesting character design that uses inspiration from Hollywood movies. His name is David (2001: A Space Odyssey), he has a bandanna (First Blood), and uses an alias "Plisken" (Escape from New York), all references to something. Snake is not, however, just a copy-paste of these different movies.

While you make some solid points in this, I can't help but disagree for the most part. The crux of your discussion seems to be something like "Actors in video games are bad because they're recognizable." Which has some merit to it, don't get me wrong. I was thinking the same thing when Reedus showed up at the end of P.T. But, and you mention this yourself, Kojima has always been a fan of merging games and movies. He's said he wants to reinvent the action genre like he reinvented the stealth genre. Just because you recognize someone's face doesn't mean it's ham-ish or will date it. I mean, the same could be said for voice actors, if you think about it. I don't know how many times I've heard the same voice actor in a different game doing the exact same voice as another character from another game. It only takes you out of the experience if you let it. You can see the same actor in several movies and, if they're good, they'll play their parts well and really bring that character to life and have it stand independently of their other performances. So I guess I don't quite understand the primary core of your argument, because it just seems like the next logical step for Kojima. Whether it's a good choice or a bad one, well, only time will tell. But I don't see a lot of bad about it.

I agree, I don't see why it dates the game, is the PS1 game Apocalypse dated by the fact that it has Bruce Willis? Your point for voice actors is a good one, should Mark Hamill stop voice acting because I recognize his voice?

His main gripe seems to be that they chose to use these trailers to showcase all the famous faces they have on board in place of any hard context regarding the game's setting or play. Basically, he's mad the game's so far selling itself on face alone. Not that it has celebrity presence, but that it's the only presence.

Slug of Borg yeah but that's what more or less every game does with their reveal trailers. they show off the charactrers and how to world around them looks. they dont throw plot and gameplay into these kinds of trailers. at best they throw in some 1 frame picture of gameplay.
@SuperBearPoo

I think his problem is that original characters are more memorable and immersive than using the faces of real people, especially well-known actors. Recognizing someone's voice in a game isn't anywhere near as distracting as recognizing someone's face, especially if it's the face of the main protagonist that you recognize. Voice actors can really bring a character to life if they do a good job, and it's much easier to ignore the fact you recognize a voice than it is with a face. You really underestimate the range of a human being's vocal chords. People can make significantly different voices, but they can't change their face outside of plastic surgery. All it does is create an extra hurdle to immersing the player in the game world, and a needless one at that. You also didn't attempt to address his cast of memorable video game characters at all. Which one leaves more of an impact, Dante or that character Kevin Spacey played in Call of Duty? Ratchet or that character that guy from Mad Men played in L.A. Noire? Sure, time will tell, but I highly doubt we'll need much more time to realize that using the faces of real people in video games is generally inferior to using a completely original character with a face that no one recognizes.

Okay this is driving me crazy, but what the fuck is the appeal of this Death Stranding..thing? And like Yahtzee said: "emphasis on 'thing.' " I have no idea what this game is supposed to be and people are just already hyped about it. I don't get it

1:05 "When actors portray characters in films... they want to make you believe they're a different person". I've spoken to trained actors and, interesting point, this is not true. They want you to believe they are themselves in a different situation than real life. It's far more believable to be an extension of yourself, rather than try to be someone else. It makes little difference to the video, but I thought it worth mentioning.

Unknown people would work way better than celebrities IMHO. Using a face no one knows to build a character, even if that person can't do a good acting, you can have someone else who does, do the mocap and maybe even the voice...

I still want original faces for protagonist and main character's for future games. Just look at Snake, his fictional face is so iconic and irreplacable. I was a bit worried about Death Stranding about this thing when they showed Norman but at the same time I'm wierdly excited about Mads Mikkelsen, he is a legendary actor and want to see how it goes.

You make a good point about the reasoning with developers using real established actors, but I can't say I can agree with the problem of using them. Like how you say they're just using them to show off their connections and that they're able to get popular people from well known shows and movies. You can make the same argument for any movie that casts a popular actor for their role, not just a game. That disconnection from the same actor cast as different roles has got more to do with your own image of that actor rather than a game flaw. Should actors not be able to work in different projects due to their previous work, regardless of how popular said work is? Nowadays, in cinematic (as much as I hate that word) games, acting talent and range is really important to nail the atmosphere and tone of the game. Talking about Death Stranding here, you're right in that there hasn't been any gameplay to show for to get hyped about, but that doesn't negate the excitement for the trailers either. Gameplay is a part of what makes a good game. there is also atmosphere, story, level design and so on. What we've seen in the trailer is a glimpse of the setting, tone and story. Something many fans of Kojima enjoy the most about his games. Others will prefer the gameplay and, as such, won't care as much for these trailers. It's just a matter of what's more important to people in the game.

I disagree, so much of personality comes from an actor's face. Just yesterday I was reading an article about why according to psychologists, Mads' face seems so evil. We are in an age where we don't have to imitate biology anymore, we can just directly capture it.
@AlInGaP_Diode
@AlInGaP_Diode 7 лет назад
Which is why it would be great if they found some amazing unknowns like in Silent Hill 2. You don't need famous actors to get amazing performances and I'm sure Mads face isn't the only one that can intimidate.

Guy Montag Sadly we have a shortage of Michelangelos, tech is so advanced now that artist created face would look fake/unnatural. BTW I'm sure Lisa from P.T was not a celeb. So there is use for making custom faces by hand.

This is a video I can agree with. To me, I've grown a bit sick of the whole photo realism that sticks out like a sore thumb, as if it tries to get your attention to an actor down to the smallest pore. It's become all too familiar with real life if you ask me. With the upcoming releases of Yakuza's 0, Kiwami and 6, I just might give it a shot to play them.

in yakuza 6 the real reason kitano got in there is because this is the last yakuza game to be made (story wise), and yakuza series creator and kitano have been drinking buddies for a very long time so he figured to have some fun with his pal before ending ending arc story, its in one of his interview.

This is how I feel when i see the same actors over and over again in movies, like with Brad Pitt in Allied, all I could remember how much interesting he was in Inglorious Bastards than in this one. Yeah, it's their job to get as many parts in movies as they can, because its their job, but its really hard to shake off that we've seen them before and it hurts. And don't get me started on voice actors... But I do agree with this, If they are going to add actors, they either have them create amazing characters, or, use an actor who isn't well known or doesn't get around as much.

I definitely understand the point here. It's just strange when games have the ability to do anything they want but actors are directly used to model them. On the bright side, you'll see those actors doing things in games that they probably wouldn't in movies.
