Fun fact: Snails actually love rat poison, they often end up eating whole packages of it. It doesn’t effect them in a negative way, except they might get really fat! So the developer actually did some research, I think this is a great game! (:
Товарищ Сильвио yup! I first learned that fact from my old science teacher, he really liked snails and he’d always teach us little fun facts about them.
I think the kid doesn’t understand death or war seeing the “passed out rat” and thinking he’ll get sick “sleeping” where the snail clearly died. He may have seen his brother get blown apart and thinks that he can put him back together by finding his limbs.
DopamineDreams Here in Taiwan(contextually, where this game background is based upon) we have three terms for uncle that blood related to, 舅舅(mom’s male sibling),叔叔(dad’s younger brother ),阿伯/伯伯(older). We call strangers that looks in middle age 叔叔, and someone clearly above your dad’s age 阿伯. Still we have this courtesy thing to call people for their you ger age term, like sis(姐姐/大姐) for any woman look-like person seemingly above your age. Normally calling strangers uncle is when you see this person is clearly proud of his maturity or you want him to be your sugar daddy(no vice versa if you want a sugar mom you need to call them sis).
@@tjulers could you give a little explanation on why people are so mad in the review? I want to understand the context of it if you had the time to explain it
“This puzzle is actually pretty complex” *couple minutes later* “The puzzles in this game are too easy” *couple more minutes later* “That was not an easy puzzle”
Lmao most of the negative reviews are Chinese people, though most seem to have an issue with the translation, some are definitely pissed about the message.
@@svyalinirnhut890 Yup. Detention - which the Mainlanders also brigaded and got banned from Steam - was another game made by Red Candle, criticizing the *Taiwanese government* and STILL the fuckers got mad. Freedom of expression and the Chinese state cannot exist at the same time. The Chinese communist is perhaps the single greatest threat to a free Asia and must be destroyed.
I think this whole thing is about seeing war from the eyes of an innocent child who doesn’t truly understand the concept of death,he thinks the others who are dead in the ground are sick and sleeping, and he also thinks he can just put his brother back together,he sees his people as small creatures being hunted and killed by their predators who are the birds, his little mind does not understand what’s going on so he makes do with what he knows. I feel like the whole thing the game is trying to show is how horrible war truly is and who the real victims of war are, those who have no choice but to live in it,forced to grow within the slaughter, also I didn’t really see the ending but Charlie said it has to with guilt so maybe he was looking for his brother’s body parts not to bring him back to life but have his body laid to rest I believe in some cultures(I’m not too sure) people need to have as much of the body as possible to properly bury the deceased. Clearly he only saw his family members as humans because he saw everyone as snails including his uncle so maybe he thought everyone else was involved and marching slowly towards their end but as child’s mind works he might’ve taken his mother and brother for granted, maybe that’s why he saw them as humans. Personally it looks like a great game I’d love to see a good analysis on it since I personally am not very sure on what’s going on with the symbolism and how deep it goes.
Most of the negative reviews for this game (based on the 10 I read) Seem to be mainland Chinese people complaining about the message of the game. I can't tell for sure because I can only read bits and pieces but if that is true, it's a real shame that this game is being buried by people who refuse to accept that their government isn't actually sent by the gods and that they have historically and presently treated the people in and outside the mainland like garbage. If someone who can actually read the comments fluently would correct me that would be appreciated but that is what I gathered.
Well consider the "Devotion" incident I don't think your speculation is false. Hope this game gains popularity with western audiences to bury those stupid ass negative reviews. This game looks sick, got a great story, good music and engaging puzzles and people just shit on it because of its' theme? Get the fuck outta here. But I honestly feel bad for those poor souls living in mainland China, they'll live and die never seeing anything but lies.
You are right, also mainland chinese people did this one year ago on a game called Devotion which end up got removed from steam. I appreciated about someone know where the negative reviews come from and said about it.
Well they live under constant propaganda so it's no surprise they think their goverment is good, and even if they slightly critisize the goverment they get punished.
As a fellow Taiwanese I am so happy that Charlie like this game! Can someone please let me know on which day did Charlie stream this? I would love to watch the whole thing!
I hate to say,but sadly the game was about a politics between China and Taiwan, so many people form China was review bombing the game which you can see by the review percentages. Such as act by the people from China had succeed get a game called Devotion(which also developed by Taiwanese and include some of the politics)removed from steam one year ago. I am sorry to bring this up, and maybe some moment some people will start bombarding this command section.
Wow, I love artistic games WITH ACTUALLY INTERESTING GAMEPLAY. I hate the pomp some "art" games have that are basically walking sims. It's neat to see a good product!
@@omgitshaan7065 I like that I spend the entire comment to talk about hating pretentious art games and your first thought is "wow, must be a pretentious art kid"
If I understand this game correctly. It's about the kmt taking Taiwan after the chinese civil war. After the kmt lost to mao's communist party, they escaped to taiwan. The Kmt enacted martial law, they imprisoned and executed a lot of Taiwan social elite and intellectuals. During this time, they reinstated the currency as well so the people already in Taiwan (japanese colony taiwanese and aboriginals) essentially got fucked. You can search up the White Terror for more info. So this game isnt really about Taiwan and china, it's about a dark part of Taiwan's history. All the people in arms about the accents saying its racist is kinda unjustified. The kmt came to taiwan from the mainland with a mandarin dialect where the original taiwanese were from Fujian and were occupied by Japanese so thus the taiwanese (hokkien)/japanese dialect.
Yeah, the people trying to connect this to the PRC are really showing their ignorance of Taiwan and its history, which is to be expected from Americans. The native people of Taiwan were treated horrifically when the Japanese occupied the island, and the KMT basically took control of the Japenese state structures of Taiwan after they fled the mainland. The modern ROC on Taiwan is a legacy of KMT and Japanese imperialism. PS: Hokkien is a Chinese dialect, not a Japanese dialect. Japan committed genocide against the native Taiwanese, one of their many atrocities committed during WW2.
Thank you, the explanation given by Charlie didn't really click with me, since it sounded like taiwan was under occupation of the CCP. Furthermore, there was some Japanese mixed in the credits which didn't make sense to me if I were to go by Charlie's explanation. I would also like to apologise for what my ancestors did to the Taiwanese people.
In Taiwan people were encouraged to rat on their loved ones who didn’t like the rule. So when the boy turns in those snail shells it could reference him ratting people out for thought crimes.
@@bigrecipe7910 agreed, especially about the fighting mechanics part. but then again for how beautiful it is, maybe RoR isn't a game that's meant to be played at all... ^^; and every rose has its thorns, right? it was so controversial that it wasn't even released in most countries, because "little girls and all that"... people are sensitive when it comes to little girls.
@@TheTheThe_ When it comes to tech companies that provide digital services it's usually a matter of china outright buying the company or the Chinese being the dominant consumer. Twitch is owned by Amazon and I don't know the specifics between Amazon's relationship with China I do know that alibaba is a chinese company though and it's basically knockoff amazon.
I watched the beginning of this stream and had to go and when I came back 3 hours later he was still playing this and it was a huge surprise lol I was like "is it so bad it's good?" Guess this vid will fill me in.
an idea on why snails are a main theme: "luo," the word for the spiral pattern in a snail's shell, is said the same as "(xun) luo" which means for military/police to go on patrol
Uncle is used as term of respect/friendly relations with/for someone older than you in China sorta like how people call there parents close friends Uncle in the US?
People dont call their parents close friends aunt/uncle in the US lol. I call my aunts and uncles, aunt and uncle. If you call your parents friends a relative, you're weird.
@@jefftraboulsy8631 i've been calling one of my mom's best friends my aunt for years. it's a pretty normal thing. just because you don't do it doesn't mean no one else does lmao
@@jefftraboulsy8631 it's not really weird. i have an uncle that's my dad's friend, even though we're no related at all. they consider themselves brothers since they've been best friends their whole lives.
It's so fucking cool when Charlie actually likes and enjoys a game. You can just watch his interest grow as he tries to piece together the hidden message. Plus, he gave it an 8/10, which is fantastic.
Lol most of the bad reviews on steam are from Chinese people being angry at the meaning, but I did find some Chinese negative reviews where they just gave some criticism of the actual game and not the meaning which is always nice
Birds are the Snail’s main predator. The snail meaning signifies patience in life, just like the manatee spirit animal. No matter fast or slow you go, you will get to your destination. The meaning of the snail also teaches you the value of humor. Life does not have to be so serious and tense all the time, so learn to laugh and have fun!
Charlie actually making the effort to try and pronounce/remember the character's names properly is pretty cool A lot of ppl would go "haha china name funny" very quickly Charlie really proving himself as the ultra chad christ
Damn, imagine being the developer and seeing Charlie's reaction to your artwork knowing how much experience he got on games and giving the fact that he always keeps it real.
The style of this game reminds me of another game that almost nobody has played, yet was so amazingly good back then. It's called Alice:Madness Returns. Great game for someone who has yet to check it out.
I love the fact that when he actually does find a good game, he admits it's good. He started off making fun of it, then more and more was like "dang, this is pretty cool." I have a lot more respect for this guy, to see that he's not just mindlessly mocking things, but can respect a good game when he stumbles across one.
As a Taiwanese ,thank you to play this game It really means a lot to the us when people know what's going on inthe past of Taiwan Sadly even nowadays 感謝支持臺灣遊戲
To be fair, this game isn't really about mainland China rn, it seem more likely is about 228 incident. Which happened in 1947, an event around Japanese empire and the previous Chinese government fleet to Taiwan.
